Yes—the standard PS5 is getting AI-powered upscaling. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, as a lighter, PS5-optimized relative of the PS5 Pro’s PSSR technology. It is designed to improve image detail and stability, but works only in games whose developers add support. The first supported games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What QSSR does on the standard PS5
QSSR is an upscaling technology: it uses a game image to produce a higher-resolution output, aiming to retain or recover detail while the console renders less work than it would for a native-resolution image. Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling, developed from work associated with Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony’s QSSR announcement says the implementation uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5.
Sony says the goal is greater pixel-level clarity and image stability. That may help preserve fine detail in motion or in visually busy scenes, but the announcement does not provide independent image tests or universal resolution and frame-rate figures. Results should be understood as game-specific rather than a promise that every supported title will look or run the same way.

PSSR is Sony’s higher-end AI upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. Its February 27, 2026 technical announcement reported that PSSR had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. Sony’s PSSR announcement also links the newer PSSR algorithm and neural network to Project Amethyst.

QSSR brings related image-quality aims to the less powerful standard PS5 through a more streamlined, console-tuned implementation. It is not the full PS5 Pro PSSR implementation moved unchanged to the standard console.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. Both received updates that add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, so support may grow as more studios adopt it and update their games.

In its announcement, Insomniac Games Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it helps resolve fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer descriptions of the technology’s benefits, not independent benchmark results.

Do you need a PS5 Pro, or a new console?
No. QSSR is intended to run on the standard PS5, so it does not require buying a PS5 Pro. It is delivered through game support, however, rather than being a system-wide switch that improves every title. To use it, you need a supported game and its QSSR-enabled update. The feature is offered as an additional graphics option in the first supported games, so check the game’s settings for the available modes.

What QSSR means when choosing a graphics mode
QSSR is another option for developers balancing image quality and performance on standard PS5. Sony has not published a universal QSSR resolution, frame-rate target, or measured advantage over a game’s other modes. The practical result therefore depends on how each studio integrates it and which graphics mode you select. Compare the choices within the specific game rather than assuming QSSR guarantees a particular frame rate or output resolution.
