Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-upscaling technology for the standard PlayStation 5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games adding QSSR as an optional graphics mode through patches announced on October 1, 2026. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability, but it published no numerical benchmarks for the feature.
What QSSR does on the standard PS5
Sony describes QSSR as a faster performance tier of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, which is available on PS5 Pro. PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them. Sony says the computational demands of that approach had previously prevented bringing the same experience to the standard PS5.
To make AI upscaling workable on that console, QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation Sony says was hand-tuned to maximize PS5 performance. Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro and positions QSSR as a way to bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5 games. Those are Sony’s descriptions, not independent performance findings. Sony’s announcement does not give QSSR’s output resolution, frame rate, latency, image-quality score, or a measured comparison with another mode.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two initial games. In both, QSSR is an additional graphics option rather than a feature the announcement says is automatically enabled in every PS5 game.

Sony said it intends to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but did not name other supported games or announce dates for future releases. The announcement also does not establish whether patches became available simultaneously in every region.
What image improvements has Sony claimed?
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on the standard PS5. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald described added pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, while Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments in Ghost of Yōtei with temporal stability. These comments describe the developers’ expectations and impressions; Sony’s post includes no quantified results or independent tests.

In practical terms, QSSR is intended to make fine visual information look clearer and more consistent in motion. How noticeable that is may depend on the game and scene, and the announcement does not provide measurements that would support a numerical comparison with another graphics option.

Sony presents QSSR as an option in patched games for the standard PS5. Its announcement does not say that current owners need to buy a different console to use it. It also does not specify whether every PS5 hardware revision is supported, so that detail is not established by the announcement.
