Perspective-taking is the ability to consider what another person can see, know, believe, feel, want, or intend. In a story, children do more than follow visible events: they track a character’s inner point of view and notice how it differs from another character’s.

Parents can encourage this skill by choosing stories with clear goals, emotions, misunderstandings, or unequal information, then pausing for open-ended conversation. Ask what a character might think or feel, invite the child to point to a clue, and remain curious rather than marking the answer right or wrong. Story discussion can create useful practice, but no single book or reading session is proven to produce a lasting change in everyday behavior.

What perspective-taking includes

Perspective-taking is not one narrowly defined ability. It has several connected dimensions:

  • Perceptual perspective: working out what another person can see or cannot see from a particular position.
  • Cognitive perspective: considering what someone knows, does not know, believes, or wrongly believes.
  • Social and emotional perspective: inferring what a person may think, feel, want, fear, or intend.

A child may understand one dimension before another. For example, a child might recognize that a character cannot see an object hidden behind a box but still be unsure why the character acts on false information. Likewise, identifying a character’s sadness is different from understanding the goal or belief that led to an action.

Perspective-taking also differs from empathy. Empathy involves responding to another person’s emotional state; perspective-taking is the process of considering that person’s point of view. They can support each other, but correctly inferring a character’s feeling is not a requirement for being caring, and a single reading does not create a permanent social trait.

How narrative structure prompts a character’s point of view

Stories regularly provide information through a character’s eyes, words, knowledge, and motives. That structure gives children a reason to shift between viewpoints instead of treating every event as if the reader and all characters know the same thing.

In three experiments involving 120 children ages 4–9, Fenja Ziegler, Peter Mitchell, and Gregory Currie examined errors when children recalled narrative deictic terms. The children showed systematic perspective-related errors across age groups. The pattern was similar for good and bad protagonists and was less common in narratives without a protagonist. The authors concluded that a protagonist-centered narrative can cue a perspective, with person-centered content strengthening that cue. Their abstract states: “The pattern of errors suggests that children adopted a perspective within the narrative.”

This finding demonstrates that narrative form can guide performance in a particular task. It does not show that ordinary story reading automatically improves social behavior outside the story.

What studies say about reading and discussion

A small autism intervention study

Kohei Tsunemi and colleagues studied 16 Japanese schoolchildren with autism. Nine children received the storybook exposure and seven served as a control group. Parents read original storybooks over five to six days. The parents were instructed to ask open-ended questions after episodes and could discuss their impressions with the child. The authors reasoned that conversation about characters’ thoughts, feelings, and motivations might prompt social role-taking.

The exposure group had higher subsequent scores on social role-taking tasks, with a similar pattern at a four-month retest. The sample was very small, population-specific, and preliminary. The authors themselves wrote that it was “a step toward the development of more effective social perspective-taking interventions for children with autism,” while explicitly calling the work preliminary. It should not be treated as evidence that a particular home-reading routine is a treatment for autism or a universal program for children.

A wordless book about jealousy

Naomi Aldrich and colleagues studied 47 children ages 5–8 using a wordless picture book about a jealous frog. Older children in that sample produced more advanced emotion understanding and narrative measures of perspective-taking than younger children. Because the task involved one book and a specific age range, the result should not be converted into fixed milestones or a timetable that every child must follow.

Teacher-led literary discussion

A 2026 intervention article by Anna Frei and colleagues reported teacher-facilitated small-group literary discussions in a randomized-control design with 619 children. The children showed improved performance on perspective-taking measures. This is relevant evidence for structured literary discussion in schools, but it did not test a parent’s home-reading routine, a particular commercial title, or long-term transfer to every social setting.

Why transfer should not be assumed

A 2019 conceptual framework by Natalia Kucirkova and colleagues describes how narrative features and adult–child conversation might support empathy and perspective-taking while also discussing limits in the evidence. It is a way to organize possibilities, not direct proof of a causal effect.

Similarly, a 2020 study by So Yeon Shin, Kathryn A. Leech, and Meredith L. Rowe reported that children’s narrative elaboration and theory of mind were not significantly related. Rich conversation about stories can be valuable without guaranteeing gains on every other measure of social understanding.

How parents can encourage perspective-taking while reading

The most useful approach is a responsive conversation that follows the child’s attention. The steps below are prompts, not a test or a prescribed therapy.

1. Choose a story with viewpoints worth comparing

Look for a plot in which characters have recognizable goals, emotions, misunderstandings, or different access to information. Illustrations can make a character’s expression, line of sight, or hidden object discussable. A simple story is fine if the characters do not all know and want the same things.

2. Preview the situation without giving an answer

Before reading, briefly notice who is present and what each character appears to be trying to do. You might say, “These two characters are looking at the same event. I wonder whether they know the same things.” Keep the comment short so the child can begin forming an idea.

3. Pause at a meaningful change

Stop when a character discovers something, misunderstands an event, hides information, or reacts emotionally. Ask one open question rather than a series of quiz questions:

  • “What do you think this character wants?”
  • “What might they know that the other character does not?”
  • “How do you think they feel right now?”
  • “What do you think they might do next?”

Wait for the child to answer. A pause gives the child time to inspect the picture and connect earlier events to the new moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Ask for the clue, not just the conclusion

Follow with, “What in the picture or story makes you think that?” The child may point to a facial expression, a line of dialogue, an earlier event, or an object that one character has not seen. This keeps the conversation grounded in the text and helps distinguish a supported interpretation from a random guess.

5. Explore more than one plausible reading

If the story leaves room for interpretation, accept alternatives. You can respond, “That could be one possibility. I was also wondering whether the character felt worried because of what happened before.” Comparing explanations teaches that two people can use the same clues and still consider different motives. Do not insist that the child identify the author’s intended emotion when the illustrations or words do not settle it.

6. Connect viewpoints without forcing a personal confession

Ask how the characters’ different knowledge affects what happens next. For example, “If Maya does not know the toy is under the blanket, what will she look for?” A child may then volunteer a personal connection, but “Have you ever felt exactly this way?” is not required. Some children understand a character better through the plot than through talking about their own experiences.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

7. Revisit the viewpoint after the ending

Once the story is finished, ask how a character’s knowledge or feelings changed. “What does the character understand now that they did not understand at the beginning?” This encourages the child to track a sequence of beliefs and goals rather than naming one emotion in isolation.

How to select stories for perspective-taking practice

No study establishes a single best book list, reading frequency, or age-specific sequence. Use these practical criteria when comparing titles:

Selection question What to look for Why it helps conversation
Do characters have distinct viewpoints? Different goals, knowledge, locations, or interpretations of the same event The child can compare what each character sees or believes.
Can intentions be inferred? Actions and dialogue that reveal or conceal motives You can ask what a character wants and which clues support that idea.
Are feelings shown through events and pictures? Expressions, body language, consequences, or changes in behavior The child can link an emotion to its cause rather than merely label it.
Does the plot include a misunderstanding? One character lacks information or holds a mistaken belief It creates a natural reason to discuss what each person knows.
Can the child follow the language and plot? Vocabulary, length, and complexity that fit the child’s current comprehension A child cannot easily compare viewpoints if basic events remain confusing.

Picture books are not the only option. Wordless books, comics, short chapter scenes, and stories told from alternating viewpoints can all support discussion. The useful feature is an opportunity to reason about a person’s inner perspective, not a label on the cover.

Adjusting the conversation for age and ability

Children develop unevenly. A younger child may begin with visible information: “Who can see the ball?” An older child may discuss a false belief, conflicting motives, irony, or how a narrator’s wording shapes the reader’s judgment. Move from concrete questions to more abstract ones when the child is ready, but do not treat an answer as a diagnostic test.

For a child who uses few spoken words, offer pointing, drawing, gestures, choices, or an assistive communication system. “Does she feel worried or excited?” can be a useful entry point, followed by “What clue shows us?” For a child who gives elaborate answers, ask how another character might interpret the same event. The goal is shared attention and reasoning, not performance for an adult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a fixed developmental problem from one unusual answer. Children can understand a viewpoint in one story and miss it in another because of fatigue, language demands, unfamiliar vocabulary, or the complexity of the plot.

Common mistakes and better responses

Turning reading into an interrogation

Frequent questions can interrupt the pleasure and continuity of a story. Choose a few high-value moments, then read on. If the child does not want to answer, model a brief thought and continue: “I think he is hiding because he is worried.”

Demanding one correct emotion

Characters may feel mixed emotions, and illustrations can be ambiguous. Ask what supports an interpretation rather than correcting every difference. Emotional accuracy in a discussion is not a pass–fail measure of empathy.

Giving away the explanation

Explain less and notice more. Instead of announcing why a character acted, ask what changed, what the character knows, and which detail matters. Children need room to construct and revise an interpretation.

Promising a treatment effect

Storybooks can provide practice and enjoyment, but the available studies do not establish that a store-bought book, a short reading streak, or a particular question routine will create lasting social gains. Do not present reading as a replacement for individualized educational, developmental, or clinical support.

Using rigid age milestones

The studies summarized here used specific tasks, samples, and settings. Their results cannot define a universal age at which every child should infer a particular belief or emotion. Observe progress across familiar activities and discuss persistent concerns with a qualified professional.

When additional support may be appropriate

If a child consistently struggles to understand everyday perspectives, communicate needs, cope with social situations, or participate in learning, share concrete examples with the child’s teacher, pediatrician, speech-language professional, psychologist, or other qualified provider. Bring the child’s strengths as well as difficulties: a child may reason well from pictures but need help with figurative language, or understand feelings but struggle to explain them verbally. Reading together can remain a supportive activity while other assessment or intervention is arranged.

A practical routine to start tonight

  1. Pick a short story in which two characters do not have identical knowledge or goals.
  2. Read until a character faces a decision, misunderstanding, or visible emotional change.
  3. Ask one question about what the character wants, knows, thinks, or feels.
  4. Invite one clue from the picture or words.
  5. Accept a plausible alternative and continue the story.
  6. At the end, ask what changed in the character’s understanding.

This routine keeps perspective-taking inside an enjoyable reading relationship. It gives children repeated chances to consider another mind while respecting uncertainty, different interpretations, and the limits of what any one story can teach.
