OTG on a phone means using its USB host capability to connect compatible peripherals. In Android documentation, this is called USB host mode: the phone takes the host role, powers the USB bus, and detects attached devices. A USB-C port or an adapter alone does not prove a phone can do this, so check the exact model before buying an adapter or connecting a device.
What does OTG mean on a phone?
“OTG” is a familiar consumer term for connecting USB peripherals directly to a phone. Android’s technical term is USB host mode. In that mode, the phone acts as the USB host and can communicate with compatible devices such as keyboards, mice, digital cameras, and game controllers. Android describes the host’s role as powering the USB bus and enumerating attached devices. Android Developers’ USB host and accessory overview explains the two roles.
Host mode is different from USB accessory mode. In accessory mode, an attached accessory acts as the host and supplies bus power; that capability does not show that the phone can host ordinary USB peripherals. Android Developers’ USB accessory overview describes that arrangement.
Does your phone support OTG?
Check the specifications or manufacturer support page for your exact phone model and look for USB host mode or OTG support. Do not infer compatibility from the phone’s USB-C connector, Android version, or the fact that it can connect to a USB accessory. Android notes that host and accessory support ultimately depends on the device hardware.

The Android 15 Compatibility Definition sets requirements for implementations that include a port supporting host mode: those devices must implement the Android USB host API, declare the android.hardware.usb.host feature, and support standard USB peripherals. This is a requirement for devices in that category, not a promise that every phone has host-capable hardware. See the Android 15 Compatibility Definition.
Which OTG adapter do you need?
Adapter choice and phone compatibility are separate checks. First identify the phone’s port and the peripheral’s connector, then confirm that the phone supports host mode. For example, if a phone has a USB-C port and the peripheral uses USB-A, the relevant adapter category is USB-C plug to USB-A socket. Match the connectors at both ends; the adapter makes a physical connection but cannot add host capability to an unsupported phone.

How to connect a USB device to your phone
- Confirm host support. Check the exact handset’s specifications or manufacturer support information for USB host mode or OTG.
- Match the connectors. Identify the phone port and peripheral plug, and use an adapter or cable with the corresponding plug and socket types.
- Connect a simple peripheral first. A low-power, ordinary device is a useful initial check. Watch for a system prompt or recognition in the relevant file manager or app.
- Use the app or protocol the device requires. A physical connection does not ensure that Android has the needed app or supports the peripheral’s protocol.
What can you connect, and what might not work?
Android’s examples of host-mode peripherals include cameras, keyboards, mice, and game controllers. A USB drive may also be usable when the phone, drive format, and file-management app are compatible. These are possible use cases, not a guarantee that every device will work with every phone.

Compatibility can depend on more than the connector: the phone must support host mode, the peripheral must be supported by the phone or an app, any required protocol must be available, and the phone must be able to meet the device’s power needs. The official Android documentation describes the USB roles and platform requirements; it does not establish a universal filesystem matrix or guarantee support for every peripheral.

Why isn’t the connected device detected?
- Host support: Reconfirm that the exact phone model supports USB host mode. A USB-C port by itself is not evidence of support.
- Connector or adapter: Check that the adapter matches both connectors and that the cable or adapter is functioning.
- App or protocol: Open the app intended for the device, if one is required, and check whether it supports the peripheral.
- Power demand: The peripheral may need more power than the phone can provide. A powered hub may be an option only when it suits the phone and setup; compatibility and charging behavior are not guaranteed.
- Storage support: For a drive, check the phone’s documentation and app requirements for the drive and its format rather than assuming every USB drive or filesystem is supported.
