OOTD means “Outfit of the Day.” It describes the clothes someone wears on a particular day or occasion, and often labels a social-media photo or video showing that outfit. The hashtag #OOTD makes those posts easier to find.

What does OOTD mean?

OOTD is short for “outfit of the day”: the clothes a person wears on a given day or occasion. Cambridge Dictionary also describes its common social-media use, where someone shares a photo or video of what they are wearing. Cambridge Dictionary’s OOTD entry covers both meanings.

Depending on context, OOTD can refer to the clothes themselves, the caption or hashtag on a post, or the familiar format of sharing what you are wearing. The acronym does not endorse a particular style, brand, or product.

How is OOTD used on social media?

People commonly add #OOTD to outfit photos and videos. The hashtag lets users browse posts and look for outfit inspiration; it does not mean every post is an advertisement or a recommendation to buy the clothes shown. A post may name brands or say where its pieces came from, but that information is separate from the meaning of OOTD.

Where did #OOTD come from?

Dictionary.com reports that #ootd first appeared on Twitter in 2009, gained traction on Instagram in 2011, and was trending in 2012. That is Dictionary.com’s account of the hashtag’s history, not definitive proof of the first use. See Dictionary.com’s explanation of OOTD.

How common is OOTD?

In an article dated June 17, 2024, Vogue Business reported 21.3 million TikTok posts using #OOTD. That is a platform count reported for 2024, not a live count or a 2026 total. Vogue Business also described OOTD content as a potential revenue driver for brands and discussed creator partnerships; this reporting does not establish that an individual post will influence purchases. As Cora Delaney, CEO and founder of talent agency EYC, put it in that report: “The way I look at it is simple: we have the capacity to drive meaningful conversations to audiences via mini storytellers who have curated loyal fan bases that trust their opinion, style and aesthetic.”

Example of OOTD in a post

A person might share a photo of their clothes with the caption “OOTD: denim jacket, white shirt, and sneakers.” Here, OOTD introduces the outfit being shown. Adding #OOTD can help people find the post while browsing the hashtag.
