Nearpod is an instructional delivery platform. A teacher builds or uploads a lesson, adds interactive activities and media, then either runs the lesson live with the whole class or assigns it for students to finish at their own pace. Students join with a code or link, and the teacher can watch responses come in and review reports afterward. A free Silver tier exists, with paid Gold and Platinum plans for individual educators and quote-based school and district licenses. Nearpod organizes instruction and makes student thinking easier to see. It does not, by itself, guarantee better learning, and the evidence section below explains what can and cannot be claimed.
How Nearpod works
Nearpod’s official FAQ describes the core workflow in one sentence: “Nearpod lets teachers turn any lesson into an interactive experience: create or upload content, then launch it live or assign it for students to complete at their own pace.” In practice, the workflow looks like this:
- Create or upload content. Start a lesson in Nearpod or bring in existing presentation material. Gold and Platinum add a Google Slides add-on, covered in the plans section below.
- Add activities between slides. Insert quizzes, polls, open-ended questions, drawing tasks, matching or fill-in-the-blank items, and interactive media.
- Choose how the lesson runs. Launch it live so the class moves together under your pacing, or assign it so students complete it independently.
- Students join by code or link. Nearpod states that students do not need to download an app. Confirm that your students’ browsers and devices work with the lesson before class.
- Monitor responses and review reports. Responses arrive during the session, and post-session reports are available afterward.
Nearpod’s How Nearpod works page gives the same workflow in more detail, and the Nearpod FAQ covers joining, activities, and the free tier.

Live lessons and student-paced assignments
Most of the difference between using Nearpod well and using it poorly comes down to which mode you choose for a given lesson.
- Live, teacher-paced lessons suit whole-class instruction, where you want to pause, check responses, and decide whether to move on, clarify a step, or go back. Responses arrive while you are still teaching, which is when they are most useful for adjusting.
- Student-paced assignments suit practice, review, and make-up work, where each student moves through the activities at a different speed. Plan the follow-up around the reports you receive afterward rather than expecting the same in-the-moment picture you get live.
Many teachers use both: a live lesson to introduce a concept, then an assigned set of activities for practice.
What teachers can do with it
Nearpod’s FAQ says the platform includes more than 20 formative-assessment and dynamic-media features. Feature availability varies by license, so confirm the specific activity you want on the plan you are considering.
Formative assessment activities
- Quizzes and polls for quick checks of individual answers.
- Open-ended questions for short written explanations, where the wording of an answer shows reasoning that a multiple-choice item hides.
- Draw It for diagrams, sketches, and visual answers.
- Matching Pairs and Fill in the Blanks for vocabulary, definitions, and factual recall.
Media and collaboration
- Interactive Video adds questions at points within a video, so students respond while they watch.
- Collaborate Board gives the class a shared space to respond together.
- Time to Climb is a game-style review format.
- VR field trips are listed among Nearpod’s features. The official materials reviewed here do not establish a required headset or a compatible model, so check a specific field trip’s instructions before planning around one.
Using student responses during instruction
The practical value of Nearpod is visibility into student thinking. A teacher can notice a common misunderstanding while the class is still working on it and decide whether to continue, clarify the point, or revisit earlier content. That benefit depends on the teacher acting on what they see; the platform surfaces the information but does not interpret it for you.

The ISTE Seal Findings Report 2026 states: “Nearpod provides real-time formative assessment data and allows teachers to control whether students receive immediate right/wrong feedback when submitting answers on activities like quizzes.” Immediate feedback suits practice, where students should correct errors quickly. Withholding it can suit a check for understanding, where you want to see what students produce before they learn whether they were right. Decide this per activity rather than leaving the default in place.
Plans and prices
The figures below come from Nearpod’s pricing page as checked on October 7, 2026. Prices and limits can change, so confirm the live page before you subscribe or buy.
| Plan | Price | Student joins per lesson | Storage | Notable inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver (individual) | $0 | 40 | 300 MB | Real-time insights, post-session reports, in-the-moment feedback |
| Gold (individual) | $159 per year | 75 | 1 GB | Google Slides add-on, Drag & Drop, AI Create Question Generator |
| Platinum (individual) | $397 per year | 90 | 5 GB | Student Notes, in addition to the Gold items |
| School and district | Quote-based | Up to 250 | Unlimited | Reporting, LMS/LTI integrations, rostering, collaboration, administrative support |
Is the free Silver plan enough?
Silver can work for a single teacher with a class of 40 or fewer, provided the lessons are light. The 300 MB storage limit is small, so lessons heavy with uploaded media may exceed it. Silver also lacks the Google Slides add-on and Drag & Drop, which matter if your lessons already live in Google Slides or depend on drag-and-drop activities.
When a paid plan makes sense
Move to Gold when the Google Slides workflow or the AI Create Question Generator would save you preparation time, or when a class is larger than 40 students. Platinum makes sense mainly when you need Student Notes, the extra storage, or a join limit of up to 90. School and district licenses are the right route when you need rostering, LMS or LTI connections, or administrative reporting across classrooms.
Recent product updates
Nearpod’s back-to-school 2026 update describes AI Create as a tool that generates an interactive lesson containing instructional content, formative assessments, and activities. The same update announces built-in Teacher Notes. The pricing page lists an AI Create Question Generator with Gold, and the update indicates that other AI Create tools differ by license. Check which AI Create tools your plan includes at the time you buy, because these features are recent announcements.
Library and content
Nearpod’s pricing page reports more than 8,500 interactive lessons, 3,300 stand-alone activities and formative assessments, and 10,200 interactive videos. It says these resources are created and vetted by Nearpod’s curriculum team and in partnership with 70+ publishers. These are vendor-reported counts. They show how much material exists, not how well it works in a given classroom. Before paying for any plan, search for your own grade band and subject to confirm that the content you need is there.
What the evidence does and does not show
Nearpod’s marketing presents student engagement as a benefit. The features described above support that aim by letting students respond and letting teachers see the responses. But the sources reviewed here do not establish a measured effect on student achievement. The ISTE Seal Findings Report 2026 documents assessment and feedback features, and the Nearpod materials document workflow and content. Neither establishes that using Nearpod raises test scores or learning gains. Outcomes depend on the questions a teacher writes, the pacing of the lesson, and the follow-up the teacher does with what the responses show.
Does Nearpod fit your classroom?
Before choosing a plan, check these points:
- Do you teach live, assign independent work, or both?
- Does the join limit on the plan cover your largest class or session?
- Are the response types and reports enough for the checks for understanding you plan to run?
- Does the library cover your subject and grade band?
- Do your students have devices and browsers that can open a lesson without an app?
- Do you need LMS, LTI, or rostering, which appear only in school and district licensing?
Nearpod is a good fit for a teacher who wants one workflow for presenting, asking questions, and reviewing responses. It is a weaker fit if your main need is a full learning management system, or if you need a plan-level feature that the free tier does not include.
