Nacos is a platform for service discovery and configuration management: services register instances, consumers find or subscribe to those instances, and applications can retrieve configuration at runtime. It is not a general-purpose traffic-governance engine or a service-mesh control plane. Nacos 3.x also describes an AI Registry for AI-related resources.
What is Nacos?
Nacos takes its name from “Dynamic Naming and Configuration Service.” Its core role is to help applications find services and manage configuration as systems change, rather than rely only on fixed addresses and static settings. The project describes the runtime aim as helping applications “safely and quickly find the services, configuration, and AI capabilities they need.” Nacos overview

In Nacos 3.x, the project also includes an AI Registry for managing Skills, A2A Agents, MCP Servers, Prompts, and AgentSpecs. That capability is specific to the 3.x product scope; it should not be assumed of earlier versions.

A provider registers one or more service instances with Nacos. A consumer can query the available instances or subscribe to changes, then choose an instance to call. Nacos supplies the service and instance information; the consuming application uses it to make the call. Service Discovery Overview

How Nacos organizes services
The resource hierarchy includes namespaces, groups, service names, clusters, and instances. A namespace can separate environments, tenants, or business domains. The appropriate grouping depends on how an organization wants to isolate and administer its services.
Discovery is not full traffic governance
Nacos discovery manages services, instances, clusters, health state, and subscriptions. Its documentation explicitly says it is “not a general traffic governance engine or a service mesh control plane.” Do not treat discovery registration as a substitute for a separate system when you need broader traffic-management or service-mesh capabilities. How does Nacos configuration management work?
Nacos can store configuration items that applications publish and retrieve through its API. Its quick start uses the actions “Publish Configuration” and “Get Configuration,” illustrating the basic workflow: place a configuration item in Nacos, then have an application retrieve it. Nacos Quick Start

For Spring Boot projects, the official guide documents starters for dynamic configuration updates and for service registration and discovery. Those are distinct integration concerns, even though both can use Nacos. Verify the documentation for the specific Nacos, Java, and Spring Boot releases in your stack: the available guidance does not establish universal compatibility across every version combination. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Nacos suitable for production?
The official quick start describes standalone deployment without client authentication as a testing setup. For production, it recommends cluster deployment with authentication and an isolated internal network, and strongly discourages exposing Nacos on a public network. A successful local launch demonstrates a basic setup; it does not establish that the deployment is ready for production. Nacos Quick Start
Check before choosing a release
The quick start lists Nacos 3.2.3 as its stable production recommendation and specifies a 64-bit JDK 17 or later runtime. Separately, the project website lists releases 3.2.4 and 2.5.4 dated August 27, 2026. These are different signals: the newest listed release is not automatically the right production choice for every deployment. Check the release notes and compatibility requirements for the branch and clients you plan to use. Nacos Quick Start Nacos project website
Quick Recap
Local trial versus production planning
| Decision area | Local trial | Production consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment mode | Standalone is presented for testing. | The quick start recommends cluster deployment. |
| Authentication and network | The documented simple test setup does not use client authentication. | Enable authentication and keep the deployment on an isolated internal network; avoid public-network exposure. |
| Version and runtime | Use the runtime required by the selected release. | Check release-specific guidance and client/framework compatibility; the quick start specifies 64-bit JDK 17+ for its stated recommendation. |
| Operations | A local launch is enough to explore basic registration, discovery, and configuration flows. | Plan availability, storage, recovery, monitoring, and permissions using the deployment and operations documentation; the quick start alone does not specify those implementation details. |
When should you consider Nacos?
- Consider it when applications need a shared mechanism for service registration and discovery alongside configuration management.
- Consider its Spring Boot integration if your project uses that framework, after checking release-specific compatibility.
- Do not select it on the assumption that discovery alone provides a complete traffic-governance or service-mesh feature set.
- For Nacos 3.x specifically, evaluate whether its AI Registry capabilities are relevant to the resources your applications need to manage.
