Monstera deliciosa fruit is edible only when fully ripe. Eat only the creamy pulp that releases easily from the core after its green, tile-like scales loosen naturally. Unripe sections can cause painful mouth and throat irritation; leaves, stems, flowers, and other plant parts are not food.
What is Monstera deliciosa fruit?
It is the elongated, corn-cob-like fruit produced by Monstera deliciosa, a tropical plant also known as the fruit-salad plant. The fruit has overlapping green, hexagonal scales around creamy pulp, and is sometimes called ceriman. An indoor Monstera rarely flowers or fruits, according to UF/IFAS Extension.
How can you tell when it is ripe?
Judge the fruit by its condition, not by a fixed number of days. As it matures, its color lightens from green and the tile-like segments begin separating. The scales should then fall away naturally; the edible pulp is the portion that releases easily from the core.
Ripening proceeds from the base toward the tip, so different portions of one fruit may be ready at different times. Do not pry off firmly attached scales or eat the firm sections beneath them. UF/IFAS says a mature fruit can be harvested and finished at room temperature, giving 5–6 days at 78–82°F as a horticultural guideline. That interval is not a guarantee that every portion is safe to eat; use the natural release of the scales and pulp as your cue. Is it safe to eat?
Ripe pulp is considered edible, but unripe fruit can contain needle-like calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals can penetrate the membranes in the mouth and cause immediate, painful irritation of the mouth and throat. Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre describes burning pain and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat after plant parts are eaten or chewed. Read its fruit salad plant safety guidance.
Do not eat the leaves, stems, flowers, unripe fruit, or any portion with scales still firmly attached. UF/IFAS identifies calcium oxalate as the main toxic agent and warns that exposure can affect people and pets; its guide to common poisonous houseplants in Florida notes that the unripe fruit is toxic even though ripe fruit is edible.

Can ripe fruit still cause a reaction?
Yes. Queensland’s Poisons Information Centre says ripe fruit may cause rapidly developing hives: a temporary, swollen, itchy rash. There is no reliable way to predict an individual person’s reaction, so ripeness does not guarantee that everyone will tolerate it.
What should you do after eating an unripe portion?
If someone has eaten or chewed a Monstera part and poisoning is suspected, contact the poison center serving your location or a medical professional promptly. Follow their advice rather than relying on the fruit’s appearance or trying to assess the exposure at home. UF/IFAS advises seeking Poison Control or medical help immediately.

What does the fruit taste like, and how is it served?
Extension sources describe the ripe pulp as tropical, with flavors often compared to banana and pineapple. It can be eaten fresh or used in desserts, drinks, or ice cream. UF/IFAS cautions against eating large quantities at once because the fruit contains large amounts of oxalic acid. For both safety and quality, use only pulp that has released easily from the core.
