Meta Muse is a personal AI agent designed to carry out tasks through a browser and connected apps, rather than only answer questions. Meta says it can work on multi-step tasks and continue in the background; Muse is the user-facing agent, while Muse Spark is the model Meta says powers it.

What Meta Muse is—and how it differs from a chatbot

Meta calls Muse a personal AI agent. In its September 8, 2026 launch announcement, the company described the distinction this way: “Muse is a personal AI agent. It doesn’t just answer questions, it actually does the work.” That is Meta’s description of its product, not an independent evaluation. Meta’s launch announcement

A chatbot generally responds to a prompt with information or generated content. Muse is intended to go further: Meta says it can use a browser and connected apps to complete multi-step tasks, including sending email, booking travel, filling out forms, and shopping. The company also says the agent can keep working in the background after the app is closed. These are stated capabilities; they do not establish that every task or app connection will work in every situation. Meta’s Muse product page

Muse is powered by Muse Spark. The names refer to different parts of the product: Muse is the agent people interact with, and Muse Spark is the model Meta says powers it. Meta’s launch announcement

What Meta says Muse can do

Meta’s product and safety descriptions list a broad range of functions. The agent is meant to handle both conversational requests and actions in connected services.

  • Answer questions and browse the web.
  • Complete tasks such as filling forms, creating documents, or setting reminders.
  • Connect to apps, track goals, and monitor matters in the background.
  • Generate images and make purchases.
  • Build tools or connectors for services with APIs or command-line interfaces, according to Meta.

The list describes Meta’s stated capabilities, not independently verified performance across all tasks or connectors. Meta’s Muse product page Meta AI Research’s safety explanation

How Muse accesses apps and handles sensitive actions

Meta says Muse runs in a dedicated virtual machine called Muse Secure VM, with its own browser and storage for the agent and user data. The design is intended to separate the agent’s working environment from sensitive services and credentials. Meta AI Research’s safety explanation

Meta describes Sentinel as a separate permission authority that controls connector actions and outbound network requests. The company says the main agent does not see real credentials, while built-in connector workers have scoped access. Users can choose, change, or disconnect app access. Actions Meta considers sensitive—such as sending an email or making a purchase—may require the user’s approval. Meta AI Research’s safety explanation

For purchases, Meta said Muse would use Stripe Link at launch, with a one-time-use card and an approval step for each payment. Its September 8 announcement described Shop Pay and 1Password support as coming soon; that wording does not confirm their current availability. Meta’s launch announcement

What Meta says about privacy—and what remains a risk

Meta says Muse’s virtual-machine data is stored in the user’s dedicated environment and that conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta’s ad systems. The company says users can opt out of having interactions used for training; it also says training trajectories are sanitized to remove key personally identifiable information. These are statements from Meta, not an independent privacy audit. Meta adds that operational access may occur when needed to support, secure, or operate the service. Prompt injection—malicious instructions embedded in content an agent encounters—is an acknowledged open problem. Meta says its controls are designed to reduce the frequency and potential harm of mistakes, but it does not claim Muse is error-free. Its safety team wrote: “Muse can and will still make mistakes, but we expect they’ll be much less frequent and cause much less damage due to the safety systems we’ve built in.” That is the company’s expectation about its own system. Where Meta Muse is available and what it costs

At launch, Meta announced access on iOS, Android, and the web, as well as messaging through WhatsApp. Meta described the rollout as U.S.-based; The Associated Press reported that launch availability was limited to the United States and that users had to be at least 18. The launch announcement says Muse is free for most needs and offers subscription plans for additional use, but it does not give plan names or prices. Availability, eligibility, supported connections, and subscription details can change. Meta’s launch announcement The Associated Press’s launch report

Muse is software accessed through phone and web clients; the cited launch materials do not identify a Muse-specific physical device or accessory that users must buy.
