Matter is a cross-platform smart-home connectivity standard, not a product brand or a replacement for Apple Home. It gives compatible accessories and ecosystems a shared way to discover, commission, secure, and control devices. Apple supports Matter in iOS and the Home app, so an eligible Matter light, outlet, lock, sensor, thermostat, fan, or other accessory can appear alongside Apple Home devices.
The practical details depend on the accessory’s category and network. Apple documents Matter support from iOS 16.1 onward. With an iPhone on iOS 18 or later, you can add and control Matter accessories locally without a home hub, although Apple recommends a hub for the best experience. Remote access, automations, notifications, and Thread networking can require a hub or Thread border router.
What Matter is—and what it is not
Matter is an interoperability standard for smart-home accessories. It defines common methods for onboarding devices, securing communication, describing device capabilities, and exchanging commands across participating ecosystems. The goal is that a certified accessory can work with more than one compatible platform instead of being locked to a single app.

Apple Home is an ecosystem and user interface. It organizes rooms and accessories, presents controls in the Home app, and connects those controls with Siri, Control Center, scenes, automations, and notifications. Matter supplies shared connectivity foundations; Apple Home decides how a supported accessory is represented and what controls are exposed in Apple’s software.

That distinction matters when shopping. A Matter logo does not promise that every function advertised by a manufacturer will appear in Apple Home. Apple supports specific Matter categories, and each accessory exposes a defined set of functions. A device may offer advanced settings in its manufacturer app that are not available in Home.
How Matter works with Apple Home
Commissioning a device
The first pairing process is called commissioning. During commissioning, your iPhone uses the accessory’s Matter setup code to authenticate it, establish secure communication, and provide the network credentials needed to join Wi-Fi or Thread, as appropriate for that product.
Apple says iOS 16.1 and later includes Matter support. After pairing, the accessory is stored with your Apple Home configuration and can be controlled from the Home app and, where supported, through Siri, Control Center, and other HomeKit-based apps.

Matter describes functionality in standardized groups called clusters. A light might expose on/off and brightness controls; a sensor might expose temperature, humidity, motion, or contact state. The standard makes the basic language consistent, but it does not require every accessory to implement every cluster. Apple Home therefore shows only the functions that the accessory and Apple’s supported category expose.
Sharing an accessory between ecosystems
Matter supports multi-admin use. An accessory can be shared with another compatible ecosystem when the manufacturer’s app or the first platform generates an additional pairing code. Apple’s Home app can use that code to add a device that was already commissioned elsewhere, subject to the accessory’s sharing flow and your permission.

- 【Easy Setup, One Control】With Matter, Skip the step of downloading and registering multiple manufacturers' apps every time you buy a new device. Instead, head straight to certified smart home platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or AiDot to control all your Matter devices.【TIP】Matter-certified hub or controller (HomePod, Echo Dot, Nest, SmartThings Hub) is required for Apple Home/Alexa/Google Home/SmartThings platforms. Alternatively, the AiDot app can be used without hub
- 【Offline-Ready Control】Once you've set up your Matter-certified devices on your LAN, they'll be able to communicate with each other directly, using the Matter protocol. This means that if your home internet connection goes offline, your Matter-certified devices will still be able to communicate and be controlled within your LAN, without relying on the internet or cloud services.
- 【Remote Control from Anywhere】Use the app to turn electronics on before you arrive home and off after you leave, no matter where you are. Using the smart plug that work with alexa manage your power usage and save money.
- 【Hands-free Voice Control】Control linkind homekit plug using simple voice commands through Apple HomeKit, Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings, without the need for physical input such as buttons or switches.
- 【Flexible Scheduling & Timer】Effortlessly reduce energy usage with automatic device shutdown after a set time. For example Chrismas Tree, TV, Lamp, Fan, Humidifier,Blenders, Lightbulbs
Matter pairings sync across your Apple devices through iCloud Keychain. Apple says you can review them at Settings > General > Matter Accessories. Removing or resetting an accessory is separate from merely deleting its tile from a room, so follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure if you need to commission it again.
Do you need a home hub?
The answer depends on the control you need, the iOS version on your iPhone, and whether the accessory uses Wi-Fi or Thread.
| What you want to do | Apple’s documented requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Add and control Matter accessories locally | iPhone running iOS 18 or later can do this without a home hub | Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience |
| Control devices while away from home | Home hub required | Remote access depends on the hub being powered, connected, and assigned to your Home |
| Run Home automations | Home hub required | Automations execute through the home infrastructure rather than only on the iPhone |
| Receive some Home notifications and use broader Home features | Home hub generally required under Apple’s compatibility guidance | Exact behavior can vary by accessory category and software version |
| Use a Thread Matter accessory | Thread-enabled Home hub or compatible Thread border router | Check the exact accessory and hub models; Apple lists model-specific exceptions |
A home hub is therefore optional for a limited, local iOS 18-or-later setup, but it remains the practical choice for a complete Apple Home installation. Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance, published May 12, 2026, states that iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub while recommending one for the best experience.
Wi-Fi and Thread: the network choice that changes setup
Wi-Fi Matter accessories
Wi-Fi Matter products join your existing wireless network. They usually do not need a Thread border router, but they still depend on compatible Wi-Fi settings and, for remote features, a functioning home hub.
Some accessories support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If Home reports an incompatible network, Apple recommends checking whether a 2.4 GHz network is available. A phone connected to a different network, a guest network that blocks device discovery, or a router that isolates clients can also prevent commissioning.

Thread Matter accessories
Thread is a low-power IP mesh network, distinct from Wi-Fi. Thread devices communicate through Thread routers and a border router that connects the Thread network to your home network. A Thread Matter accessory cannot simply join Wi-Fi because it uses a different radio and network path.
Apple’s setup guidance identifies a Thread-enabled hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), or HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Exact model support can change, and Apple’s badge guide includes additional qualifications, so verify the current requirements for the particular accessory and hub before buying.
How to add a Matter device to Apple Home
- Check the package and manual. Confirm that the accessory is explicitly supported by Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter. Note whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread, whether it needs a hub or border router, and whether the manufacturer requires an initial setup or firmware update in its own app.
- Prepare the network. Connect your iPhone to the home Wi-Fi network you intend the accessory to use. For a Wi-Fi product, make sure the required band—often 2.4 GHz—is available. For Thread, make sure a compatible Thread-enabled hub or border router is online.
- Open Home. In the Home app, tap the add button, choose Add Accessory, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Scan or enter the Matter code. Scan the QR setup code printed on the accessory, label, or manual. If scanning is unavailable, choose the option to enter the Matter code manually.
- Approve permissions and network setup. iOS asks for permission to add the accessory and provisions it onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Keep the accessory powered and near the phone and network equipment during this step.
- Assign the accessory. Choose a room and name that are easy to use with Siri. Confirm the controls Home displays, because they reflect the accessory’s supported functions rather than every feature in the manufacturer’s app.
- Test local control. Turn the accessory on or change a sensor state while your iPhone is on the home network. Test the exact functions you intend to automate before relying on them.
Adding a device that is already paired elsewhere
If another compatible app already owns the first pairing, open that app and use its Matter sharing or multi-admin option to generate an additional pairing code. In Home, choose Add Accessory; if the accessory is not found immediately, select More Options, choose the Matter accessory, and enter or scan the shared code. The accessory remains available in the original ecosystem while Apple Home receives its own authorized fabric.
Which Matter categories does Apple Home support?
Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance names these Matter categories as supported:
- Air purifiers
- Blinds and shades
- Bridges
- Fans
- Lights
- Locks
- Outlets
- Robot vacuum cleaners
- Air-quality, ambient-light, contact, humidity, motion, and temperature sensors
- Switches
- Thermostats
Support is category-specific. A Matter accessory may be certified but still expose only a subset of its physical controls in Apple Home. For example, a device with manufacturer-specific schedules, energy reports, or modes may present only basic on/off, measurement, or state controls in Home.

Apple also says vendors seeking the Works with Apple Home badge must complete Connectivity Standards Alliance Matter certification and Matter interoperability testing for a category Apple Home supports. Treat that badge and the product’s detailed compatibility statement as more useful evidence than the word “Matter” alone.
What to check before buying a Matter accessory
For a Matter smart plug or other outlet, use the same checklist you would use for lights, switches, and sensors. No particular model is assumed to work merely because it displays a Matter logo.
- Apple Home support: Look for explicit Apple Home or HomeKit support and confirm that the category is supported.
- Certification: Check that the listing identifies Matter certification rather than using “smart” or “works with” as vague labels.
- Network type: Determine whether the product uses Wi-Fi, Thread, or another transport and whether your home has the required infrastructure.
- Hub requirements: Separate local control from remote access, automations, and notifications. A product can pair locally yet still need a hub for those broader functions.
- Manufacturer app: Check whether initial setup, firmware updates, calibration, or advanced controls require a separate app.
- Multi-admin support: If you also use another smart-home ecosystem, verify that the product supports sharing and that its app can generate an additional Matter pairing code.
- Electrical and physical limits: For outlets and switches, confirm voltage, amperage, load type, installation requirements, and local electrical rules from the product documentation.
Troubleshooting Matter in Apple Home
Home cannot find the accessory
- Confirm the accessory is in pairing mode and that the setup code is readable and unused.
- Keep the iPhone, accessory, and any hub on the same home network during setup.
- Check the product manual for a required manufacturer-app setup, firmware update, or additional bridge.
- For Thread products, verify that a compatible Thread-enabled hub or border router is online.
“Incompatible network” appears
Check whether the accessory supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Apple specifically recommends checking 2.4 GHz support when this alert appears because some accessories do not support 5 GHz. Disable guest-network isolation or client isolation if your router prevents devices from communicating, and retry on the main home network.
The accessory pairs but advanced controls are missing
That usually reflects category and cluster support rather than a failed pairing. Compare the controls exposed in Home with the accessory’s Matter and Apple Home documentation. Use the manufacturer app for functions that are not part of the accessory’s Apple Home implementation.

Local control without a hub does not provide the full Home feature set. Add and maintain a compatible home hub, keep it powered and connected, and make sure the accessory and hub are signed in to the same Home configuration. Review the automation’s trigger, conditions, and the accessory’s current state after the hub is online.

Use the manufacturer’s app to install the latest firmware, then revisit Apple Home. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends manufacturer firmware updates when an accessory is reported as unsupported. If the device still fails, reset it according to its manual and commission it again with the correct code.
Common misconceptions
