Manus AI is software designed to handle multi-step digital tasks, from researching a topic to creating files or working with apps. Its Agent Mode can plan and carry out a task using available tools, while Chat Mode is for more immediate answers and discussion. An AI agent is not simply a chatbot with a different name: the useful distinction is whether it can act toward a goal across multiple steps, though the term has no single agreed definition.
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that takes a goal and works toward it by interacting with an environment. Depending on the product and permissions, that environment might include a web browser, files, code tools, applications, or APIs. A typical workflow is to interpret a request, break it into steps, take an action, inspect the result, and continue or adjust.
That is a practical description, not a universally accepted technical definition. A 2026 review describes agent-like systems along dimensions such as environmental interaction, autonomy, goal-directed behavior, learning and adaptation, and continuity over time. Systems can exhibit some of these traits more than others; “agent” does not guarantee unlimited independence or reliable completion.

Manus offers Chat Mode and Agent Mode. Manus describes Chat Mode as suited to quick answers, discussions, brainstorming, recognizing images and files, and online searches. Agent Mode is intended for more involved jobs: it plans steps and attempts to complete a requested outcome, such as a website, presentation, or video. Manus says Agent Mode uses credits, while Chat Mode conversations do not.

In other words, a direct question may be handled as a conversation, whereas a request for a finished deliverable can call for a longer sequence of actions. The boundary is practical rather than absolute: a chatbot may use tools, and an agent may still ask for direction or require a person to check its work.

Manus’s product materials list documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, slides, websites, code, games, and video among the kinds of work it supports. These are described capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular output will be accurate, polished, or complete.

Automate tasks through an API
The Manus API supports creating and managing tasks programmatically. Its documentation describes multi-turn tasks, project instructions, file attachments, webhooks, skills, and agent configuration. This is aimed at workflows that need to connect Manus tasks to other software, rather than only using the chat interface.

Manus describes a desktop “My Computer” feature that can use command-line tools to read, analyze, or edit files and launch or control applications. It requires enabling the feature and granting access to specified local folders; the description does not establish unrestricted access to a computer’s entire contents.

What should you know about pricing and access?
Manus’s help page lists Free, Pro, and Team plans. It says the Free plan includes Chat Mode and Manus 2.0 Lite in Agent Mode, while Pro includes additional agent modes and more monthly credits. The page also lists starting prices for paid plans but directs users to its live pricing page. Check that page and the checkout details before subscribing because prices, credits, and included features can change.
Plan access and feature descriptions are not independent evidence of task quality. The available materials do not establish a comparable, independent task-success rate for Manus, so treat vendor descriptions as statements of intended capability rather than proof that every task will work.

What is Manus’s relationship with Meta?
On December 29, 2025, Manus announced that it was joining Meta and said subscriptions would continue through its app and website. The company also reported that it had processed more than 147 trillion tokens and created over 80 million virtual computers. Those are company-reported usage totals, not measures of accuracy or successful task completion.
On April 27, 2026, the Associated Press reported that China had blocked the acquisition and required the parties to withdraw, while Manus’s website still described the company as part of Meta. These reports conflict in their practical implications; the current ownership and operating consequences are not established by the available information. Avoid treating the announced acquisition as an uncomplicated, settled transfer.

How should you evaluate an AI agent?
Before relying on any agent for consequential work, consider what it can access, which actions require permission, what you need to review, and how its usage is charged. A useful evaluation looks at the task and evidence of performance—not just the product label.
