Magnetic disk storage records data as magnetic patterns on a rotating surface. Its history runs from early memory concepts to IBM’s 1956 RAMAC system, then through removable disk packs and floppy disks that brought disk storage to more users.
What is magnetic disk storage?
A magnetic disk stores digital data magnetically on a rotating surface. Read/write heads move across the surface to record or recover data, while electronics and software control their movement and interpret the signals. Hard disk drives use rigid platters; floppy disks used flexible magnetic media.
Disk storage is one branch of storage history, distinct from magnetic tape, semiconductor memory and optical media. Unlike tape’s generally sequential access, a disk can seek to stored information at different locations. That direct access made disks useful for retrieving business records, though it does not mean disks outperform tape for every workload.
How did magnetic disk storage develop?
1951–1953: An idea becomes a project
Jacob Rabinow filed a U.S. patent application for a magnetic memory device in 1951. The Computer History Museum reports that Reynold Johnson’s IBM team described Rabinow’s disk concept in a 1953 report and adopted it as the basis for the RAMAC project. These were precursors to a commercial disk drive, not the commercial drive itself. Computer History Museum: IBM 350 disk storage unit and Computer History Museum: memory and storage timeline.

- 3 1/2 Floppy Disk Reader: As most modern laptops and desktop computers no longer come equipped with internal floppy disk drive for reading floppy diskettes, this 3.5 inch external USB floppy disk drive is an excellent solution to reading and writing your old floppy disks as easy as a built-in floppy disc reader. Retrieve Your Memories, for all the people that grew up with floppy disks, this is a return to the past.
- Plug and Play Floppy Disc Reader: Just insert the floppy disk into the drive, then plug the USB type A/C connector to your computer and it will be automatically detected. Bring up Windows File Explorer, you will see drive A icon under "Devices and Drives", right click it and select open option, you could cut, paste, copy the files inside your floppy disks. Note: Please get power by the USB cable without using USB hub or USB extension cable, Insufficient power supply may cause malfunction

- Broad Compatibility: This floppy disk reader is compatible with most PCs, laptops, and desktop computers with Windows 11/10/8.1/7/Vista/XP/2000 OS, but not compatible with Mac and Chrome. In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
1956: IBM ships the Model 350 with RAMAC
IBM shipped the Model 350 disk storage unit to Zellerbach Paper in San Francisco in June 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC system. The Model 350 was the disk unit; the 305 was the computer; RAMAC named the broader system. IBM describes the storage process as “miracle memory,” its own characterization. The system let businesses access stored records directly, rather than relying only on punched cards or sequential tape. IBM: RAMAC.
The Computer History Museum describes the Model 350 as holding 5 million six-bit characters—equivalent to 3.75 megabytes when converted from six-bit characters. Its physical and operating specifications show how different early disk systems were from modern drives:

- Tips: Not all of your disks were readable, that is a factor of age, not the drive. Floppy disks are products of the 80s and 90s of the last century, and has a history of 30 to 40 years, due to the retention of time is too long, some floppy disks may have been corrupted, got mold or dust, so some of your floppy disks may not be opened by our floppy disk drive successfully or the drive may can open some floppy disks fristly but stop working because of the dust on the disk. Note: Please check the status of the floppy disk carefully before reading it in case the drive stops working due to floppy disk issues.
- Fifty disks, each 24 inches in diameter
- 1,200 revolutions per minute
- 2,000 bits per square inch
- Average access time under one second
- Monthly lease: $750
These specifications and the capacity are reported by the Computer History Museum’s Model 350 account; the museum’s timeline rounds the capacity to about 5 million characters. The six-bit qualification matters: the original character count should not be confused with five million eight-bit bytes.

IBM announced the 1311 disk storage drive in 1962 with removable packs. Each pack held six disks and two million characters and weighed about ten pounds, according to the Computer History Museum timeline. Removability made it possible to transport and interchange stored data instead of keeping every disk permanently inside a drive.

1967–1973: Floppy disks become writable
IBM began work on floppy disks in 1967 and sold drives from 1971. The first 8-inch format was read-only; IBM introduced a read/write floppy drive in 1973. Later, smaller 5¼-inch and 3½-inch formats made removable magnetic storage practical for personal computers, software distribution and file transfer. IBM recounts this development in its history of the floppy disk.
IBM states that its high-density 5¼-inch floppy held 1.2 megabytes. IBM introduced its 3½-inch disk two years after the 1984 introduction of that 5¼-inch high-density format, and the 3½-inch disk held 1.44 megabytes. These are IBM’s historical capacity figures, not a claim about every disk or format.

Why did magnetic disks matter?
The important change was not just greater storage capacity. RAMAC let businesses retrieve records directly, while removable packs and floppy disks expanded the ways data could be carried between systems and users.

Floppy-drive lead inventor Warren L. Dalziel later recalled, “I had no idea how important it would become and how widespread,” according to IBM’s floppy-disk history.
What replaced floppy disks?
Floppy disks became uncommon as optical discs, flash storage, memory cards and networked storage offered alternatives with greater capacity and speed. Some legacy uses remain, but floppy disks are no longer a general-purpose storage choice for most users. The broad history and continuing legacy are described by IBM.
Magnetic disks themselves did not disappear with floppies: rigid-platter hard disk drives continue the rotating magnetic-disk approach. The key distinction is between the storage principle—magnetic recording on a rotating surface—and particular media formats such as the floppy.
