Linear Tape-Open (LTO) is an open-format magnetic tape storage technology used for backup, restoring data and archiving. Its Ultrium format stores data on single-reel cartridges. LTO is organized into numbered generations, and a drive’s ability to read a cartridge depends on the generations involved.
What does LTO stand for?
LTO stands for Linear Tape-Open. The LTO Program defines it as a tape-based storage solution built on an open format that vendors can manufacture under license. “Open” refers to that licensed format; it does not mean LTO cartridges work in non-LTO tape products. Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum are identified by the LTO Program as collaborators on LTO specifications, licensing and promotion. LTO Program
What is Ultrium?
Ultrium is the LTO tape format, designed for high capacity and performance. It uses a single-reel cartridge for backup, restore and archive tasks. In everyday usage, an LTO tape or LTO cartridge generally refers to this physical Ultrium medium. Cartridges are generation-specific, so confirm that the tape matches the drive before use.
What is the current LTO generation?
The LTO Program roadmap, accessed October 7, 2026, identifies LTO-10 as the tenth and current generation. It lists two native capacity options—30 TB and 40 TB—and transfer speeds of up to 400 MB/s. Its compressed capacity figures are up to 75 TB and 100 TB, respectively, based on a 2.5:1 compression assumption; these are not native capacities. Actual compression depends on the data, so compressed figures should not be treated as guaranteed cartridge capacity. LTO Program roadmap
#1 Best Overall
- High Capacity Storage: Provides 30TB recording capacity for extensive data archiving
- Long-Term Archival: 30-year archival life ensures data preservation for decades
- Secure Data Protection: Barium Ferrite technology provides reliable data security
- Professional Grade: Meets demanding requirements for business-critical information storage
- Cost Efficient: Reduces per-gigabyte storage costs compared to disk-based solutions
For context, Fujifilm’s cartridge specifications list LTO-9 at 18 TB native and 45 TB compressed, and LTO-10 at 30 TB native and 75 TB compressed, plus a 40 TB native/100 TB compressed option. These are manufacturer specifications accessed in 2026; the compressed values use the stated 2.5:1 assumption. Fujifilm Ultrium cartridge specifications
Can an LTO drive read older tapes?
Not every newer drive can read every older cartridge. The official LTO FAQ says drives through generation 7 can read media from their own generation and the two preceding generations. It gives narrower compatibility rules for later drives and says LTO-10 drives read only LTO-10 media. Check the exact drive model’s compatibility documentation and the cartridge generation rather than assuming backward compatibility. LTO Program FAQ
Rank #2
- Choose Quantum LTO Ultrium Media - Quantum’s LTO Ultrium media is manufactured to the highest industry standards for quality and reliability—ensuring high performance and durability, whether used for primary backup or long-term archive
- Quantum LTO Ultrium Media Offers High Storage Capacity - Up to 18 TB native and up to 45 TB compressed based on 2.5:1 compression (LTO-9, LTO-8, LTO-7, and LTO-6) or 2:1 compression (other LTO)
- High Performance - A high-durability non-contact IC memory chip up to 16 KB is built in; this contributes to significant improvement in tape library access and health reporting
- Compliant With All Media Integrity Analysis Utilities - Advanced Media Usage Reports provide a view of the media condition for an entire media pool used within a specific tape library - even those in off-site storage. Extended Data Life Management (EDLM) is designed to ensure the media integrity of cartridges placed in archival/vaulted storage. When your critical data is involved, it’s important to have a complete health record of all your media.
- Secure Your Data - Quantum’s LTO media offering supports your comprehensive, “edge-to-core” backup, recovery, and archive strategy. LTO combined with Quantum's most secure tape libraries can mitigate the risks of a cyber attack such as ransomware, and meet long-term archive requirements by providing a physical air gap, greater density, and better performance.
How does LTFS make files easier to access?
Linear Tape File System (LTFS) uses tape partitioning: one partition holds index information and another holds file data. The index helps users locate and retrieve individual files rather than treating the tape only as a sequential archive. The LTO Program says LTFS has been included since LTO-5. What should you check before choosing an LTO cartridge?
- Drive generation: identify the exact model and its supported media generations.
- Cartridge generation: match it to the drive’s read and write support; compatibility is not universal.
- Capacity type: compare native capacity for a baseline. Compressed capacity is an estimate based on a compression assumption, not a guaranteed result.
- Workload: the stated maximum transfer rate is a specification, not a promise of real-world performance for a particular system or data set.
