Lightshot is a screen-capture tool for quickly selecting part of your computer screen, then editing, copying, saving, or uploading that image. It is designed for making and sharing a cropped screenshot—not for capturing a live website through an API. The main caution is privacy: Lightshot says uploaded images are public to anyone who has their exact URL, even when uploaded through an account.
What Lightshot does
Lightshot turns a selected region of your screen into an image. After drawing the selection, you can use its editing tools, copy the result, save it locally, search for visually similar images, or upload it to get a link. The product describes this as a two-click capture workflow; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent speed test.
This makes Lightshot useful when you want to point out a specific error message, show a section of a page, or send someone a cropped view without first saving and attaching a file. It is not the same thing as a website screenshot API: Lightshot captures what is on your own screen, while an API captures a URL in a browser environment.

How capturing and sharing work
Start a capture
On Windows, Lightshot’s FAQ says to press PrntScr to begin, then select the region you want. On Mac, the official download page lists Shift-Command-9 as the hotkey. The Mac shortcut is vendor-documented and may depend on app version or configuration. The exact shortcut can also be affected by other software or system keyboard settings.

Choose what to do with the selection
Once the capture is selected, Lightshot provides actions to copy, save, edit online, upload, or cancel. The official hotkey guide lists these Windows shortcuts:
- Ctrl+C: copy the selection to the clipboard.
- Ctrl+S: save the image.
- Ctrl+E: open the online editor.
- Ctrl+D: upload the image.
The hotkey guide gives corresponding Mac combinations using Command in place of Ctrl. If a shortcut is intercepted by another app or does not match your installation, use the on-screen action controls or check the shortcut guide for your platform.
Save or copy locally
Copying is convenient if you are pasting the screenshot into a message, document, or issue tracker. Saving is the better choice when you want a file to attach, archive, or edit with another application. Lightshot’s FAQ lists PNG, BMP, and JPG as supported image formats. Choose the format based on how you will use the file; do not assume the uploaded sharing link is a private substitute for a local copy.

Uploading sends the image to Lightshot’s online service and returns a short link for sharing. The service also offers a gallery for account holders to find their screenshots. A gallery account does not make an uploaded image private: Lightshot’s privacy policy says every uploaded image is public to anyone who knows its exact URL, whether it was uploaded directly or through a user account.

Which platforms Lightshot lists
Lightshot’s product pages list Windows, Mac, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. Its download page offers Windows and Mac desktop applications and a Chrome add-on. These are the platforms stated on the official pages; they do not establish a current version number or maintenance schedule.
There is no Lightshot application designed specifically for Linux according to the download page. The publisher mentions Wine as something users can try to run the Windows application, which is a workaround rather than native Linux availability. Compatibility through Wine can vary, so do not rely on it as an officially supported Linux build.
Privacy: treat an uploaded screenshot as public
Lightshot’s privacy policy states: “In particular, every image uploaded (even if it was uploaded to your gallery) to this website is public – whether uploaded directly without going through a user account, or uploaded via a user account – and has its own URL. Every image can always be accessed and viewed by anyone who types in that exact URL.” The policy also says: “Functionality of our website is not intended to be a secure platform; it’s for sharing images.”
In practical terms, do not upload screenshots containing passwords, account details, private messages, customer records, internal dashboards, personal data, or anything else you would not want someone with the link to see. An obscure URL is not access control. If you need to share confidential material, use a service that offers appropriate access restrictions, or keep the screenshot local and transfer it through a channel approved for that information.

The policy identifies Skillbrains and its affiliates and describes collection of information such as device characteristics, operating system, browser, IP address, cookie-related identifiers, login times, and page or image viewing statistics. It also says third-party advertisers may use cookies or similar technologies. Those are the policy’s stated practices, not an independent audit of the service.
If you uploaded something by mistake
Lightshot’s FAQ says users can contact support or use the site’s abuse button to ask for removal of an accidentally uploaded image containing private information. That is a request route, not a promise that removal will be immediate or guaranteed. If exposure could put an account or person at risk, take any additional protective steps the situation calls for rather than assuming a removal request has already secured the image.
Lightshot or Windows Snipping Tool?
For a Windows user who only needs a basic screenshot, Microsoft’s built-in Snipping Tool is a reasonable option to consider alongside Lightshot. The available official documentation establishes that Snipping Tool is a built-in Windows capture option, but does not provide a current, complete side-by-side feature comparison with Lightshot. The right choice depends on your workflow, not on an unsupported claim that one has more features.

- Consider the built-in option if you prefer to start with software already included with Windows and do not need Lightshot’s particular upload-and-link flow.
- Check privacy requirements first if sharing is involved. Lightshot’s policy says uploads are public to anyone who has the exact image URL.
A full comparison should check the current capture modes, editing tools, sharing controls, account requirements, and storage behavior of the particular versions you plan to use. The official pages available for Lightshot do not establish every point needed for a reliable feature-by-feature verdict.

When Lightshot is not the right kind of screenshot tool
Lightshot is for capturing a region visible on your screen. If you need to capture a web page from code—for example, to generate an image of a URL for an application, workflow, or AI agent—a website screenshot API is a different category of tool. It can render a supplied URL without requiring you to open and crop it manually, but it does not replace Lightshot’s desktop selection workflow.

The capture hotkey does not start a selection
On Windows, the documented start key is PrntScr; on Mac, the download page lists Shift-Command-9. Confirm you are using the shortcut for your platform and that Lightshot is installed or enabled. Another app or a system-level keyboard setting may be using the same key combination. Try the visible app controls or adjust the conflicting shortcut where your setup allows it.

Copying does not put an image on the clipboard
Lightshot documents Ctrl+C on Windows for copying a selected region. First make sure a capture selection is active, then use the copy action and paste into a compatible destination. If the destination does not accept image data, try saving the screenshot as a file instead.
You cannot find a screenshot in the gallery
The FAQ says a prntscr.com account is needed to find all screenshots in a gallery. A locally saved or copied capture is a separate workflow from uploading an image to the service, so check whether the image was actually uploaded and whether you are viewing the account associated with it.
You need Linux support
The publisher does not list a native Linux application. It mentions trying Wine with the Windows app, but that is not a supported native build and may not work reliably in every environment. If you must use Linux, test the workaround with non-sensitive images before depending on it for regular work.
You are worried about sensitive content
Do not upload the image if its contents should not be public. The removal path for an image already uploaded is to contact support or use the abuse button, but the FAQ does not promise immediate or guaranteed deletion. Where confidentiality matters, avoid public-link workflows entirely.
What to remember before using Lightshot
Lightshot’s core purpose is quick, selected-area capture followed by basic editing, copying, saving, visual search, or link sharing. Its official pages list desktop and browser options, while Linux is described only as a Wine workaround. The key decision is whether you want a local screenshot or an online share link: uploads are public to anyone who knows the image URL, so keep sensitive captures out of the upload flow.
