Keep Connect is a dedicated automatic router-rebooter. It sits between a wall outlet and your modem, router, or access point, monitors connectivity, and cuts power when configured tests fail. After a short power-off period it restores power and waits for the equipment to start.

That can recover an intermittently locked-up router while you are away. It cannot repair an ISP outage, damaged cabling, weak Wi‑Fi coverage, bad hardware, or an account problem. Its normal action is a power cycle, not a factory reset that erases settings.

What problem does Keep Connect solve?

Keep Connect targets a specific failure: the modem or router still has electrical power but has stopped providing usable internet access, and a manual reboot normally brings it back. This is useful when equipment is difficult to reach or must operate unattended.

  • Remote workers whose home connection occasionally locks up.
  • Vacation homes with cameras, sensors, smart locks, or alarms.
  • Small offices and remote sites without on-site IT staff.
  • Cellular, satellite, fixed-wireless, 5G, cable, DSL, or fiber installations that periodically need a reboot.
  • Routers mounted in a loft, utility cupboard, or other inaccessible location.

It is not a general remedy for slow service, congestion, poor signal placement, interference, or an outage at the ISP.

“Reset” usually means power-cycle, not factory reset

During normal operation, Keep Connect removes electrical power from the connected equipment and then restores it. Router settings, Wi‑Fi names, and passwords remain intact. A factory reset is a separate action on the Keep Connect unit itself: documented current models use a long button press that erases its saved configuration.

How the automatic reboot works

Keep Connect connects to the local Wi‑Fi network and runs configured connectivity tests. The current manual describes a default cycle of approximately five-minute checks, a second check about one minute after a failed primary test, a 30-second power cut when both fail, and an approximately three-minute boot wait before checking again: current Keep Connect manual.

  1. The primary test destination is checked.
  2. If it fails, Keep Connect waits roughly one minute and performs the secondary check.
  3. If both checks fail, the controlled outlet is switched off for about 30 seconds by default.
  4. Power is restored.
  5. Keep Connect waits about three minutes for the modem or router to boot, although real reconnection can take longer.

The 30-second outage is therefore only part of the interruption; the boot delay follows it.

How can it act when the router is offline?

The device is not asking the failed router over the internet to reboot. Keep Connect remains powered and controls its own electrical outlet locally. Internet tests decide when to switch, while the switch itself does not require the router to be online.

There is still a dependency: Keep Connect needs its own power, firmware, and normally a connection to the local Wi‑Fi network to make decisions. If it loses power, forgets its configuration, or cannot reconnect to Wi‑Fi, the intended recovery may not occur. Cloud dashboards are separate from this local switching function.

What does it test?

Documentation varies by firmware and date. Older settings pages give Google and CNN as examples; the newer manual identifies Johnson Creative test domains as defaults for that version. Check the settings shown by your exact unit rather than assuming one universal list.

A failed domain lookup is not proof that every internet service is down. DNS failure, a captive portal, an ISP error page, a blocked request, or a temporarily unavailable test site can create a false positive. Conversely, a test destination may answer while your VPN, camera service, or normal website remains unusable. Multiple destinations, longer timeouts, ping-oriented checks, socket tests, and DNS-fallback options reduce—but cannot eliminate—these errors. See the manufacturer’s advanced settings and troubleshooting guidance.

Installation and first configuration

Connect the equipment

  1. Plug Keep Connect into a suitable wall outlet.
  2. Plug the modem, router, or access point into Keep Connect’s controlled outlet.
  3. Check the exact model’s electrical rating and avoid connecting equipment that requires a graceful shutdown or could be damaged by abrupt power loss.
  4. If modem and router startup order matters, decide whether they should be restarted together or with a staggered arrangement.

The manufacturer’s setup manual describes connecting the networking device and configuring Keep Connect through its temporary Wi‑Fi network.

Join the setup network

  1. Connect a phone, tablet, or computer to the temporary Keep Connect SSID.
  2. Open the configuration portal when it appears.
  3. Select the household Wi‑Fi network or enter its SSID manually.
  4. Enter the Wi‑Fi password and configure monitoring and notifications.
  5. Save the configuration, then record the Keep Connect local IP address and administrator credentials.

In a troubleshooting page updated March 17, 2022, Johnson Creative listed WPA Enterprise and WPA3 as unsupported and warned that spaces in Wi‑Fi passwords and automatic password filling could cause problems. Treat those as documented limitations of the referenced firmware, not proof that every newer model has the same restrictions.

Reconfigure or factory-reset the unit

  • A button hold of about five seconds can reopen the configuration portal on documented models.
  • A hold of about 30 seconds performs a factory reset on documented current units and erases saved settings.
  • Older firmware may use different button behavior, so follow the instructions for your model.

Prevent reboot loops

An ISP outage will not be fixed by restarting the router repeatedly. Keep Connect therefore has a continuous-reset limit: three cycles by default in the documented settings. After that limit, sustained-outage behavior retries at approximately four-hour intervals by default. Both limits are configurable.

  • Keep the continuous-reset limit conservative.
  • Allow enough post-reset time for a slow modem or satellite link to reconnect.
  • Use more than one test destination and suitable timeout settings.
  • Choose a mode that retries Keep Connect’s own Wi‑Fi connection before power-cycling the router when appropriate.
  • Use “Block Resets/Await Reconnection” (or the equivalent option) if a temporary loss of Keep Connect’s Wi‑Fi should not reboot the router.
  • Enable notifications so repeated resets become a troubleshooting signal rather than an invisible loop.

The documented response modes include “Reset Normally,” “Reboot/Retry before Resetting,” and “Block Resets/Await Reconnection.”

Should it reboot the modem, router, or both?

Everything on the controlled outlet loses power. A router alone restarts only the router; a modem and router sharing that outlet restart together. Simultaneous startup is not always ideal: many networks become reliable sooner when the modem establishes service before the router starts.

Johnson Creative documents a follower mode for coordinating two Keep Connect devices so modem and router power can be staggered. Whether that is necessary depends on your hardware and installation.

What Keep Connect cannot fix

  • ISP or upstream network outages.
  • Damaged coaxial, fiber, telephone, or Ethernet cabling.
  • Poor Wi‑Fi placement, interference, or inadequate coverage.
  • Router capacity limits, overheating, firmware defects, or failing hardware.
  • Incorrect DNS, DHCP, VLAN, or ISP-authentication settings.
  • An account suspension, service-plan problem, or cloud-service outage.
  • A defective modem/router power adapter.

A reboot can temporarily hide one of these causes. Review reset logs and notifications, then investigate the underlying pattern.

Safety and operational trade-offs

Keep Connect is a mains-powered switching device. Verify the exact regional model’s load rating and certifications; do not assume surge protection. Abrupt power loss can interrupt calls, VPNs, security systems, streaming, smart-home routines, and uploads. Avoid using it for computers, storage systems, or other equipment that requires an orderly shutdown unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that use.

If the real problem is brief power failure or brownouts, a UPS is usually more appropriate. A UPS keeps equipment powered but does not normally detect and recover a router that remains on yet has lost internet access.

Local operation, cloud features, and security questions

The basic documentation describes local setup and automatic operation after configuration. Johnson Creative’s optional Connect Assistant service adds remote status, manual resets, reset logs, remote settings changes, and notifications: Connect Assistant.

  • Core rebooting: local monitoring logic and a local power switch.
  • Remote administration: cloud-service functions that depend on the vendor service and an account.
  • Internet-independent recovery: local switching can occur during an internet outage, but this does not mean every feature works without local Wi‑Fi, power, or cloud access.

Before buying, verify the current model’s Wi‑Fi security support, firmware-update process, account requirements, data handling, and behavior if the vendor’s service is unavailable. The available product pages do not establish every modern security or lifecycle detail.

Keep Connect compared with alternatives

Option Strength Limitation
Keep Connect Purpose-built connectivity tests, power cycling, reset limits, and optional notifications. Requires compatible Wi‑Fi and adds a mains device; it cannot repair the ISP.
Router scheduled reboot Integrated and inexpensive. Usually cannot detect an unexpected lockup or act when the router is unresponsive.
Conventional smart plug General-purpose and often inexpensive. May depend on the failed router or cloud service and lack tests, limits, and diagnostics.
Home Assistant or Hubitat plus local plug Custom pings, DNS checks, APIs, alerts, and local rules. Requires an always-on controller and careful loop protection. See Home Assistant and Hubitat.
UniFi SmartPower Plug Managed power for users already invested in UniFi. Less compelling as a standalone choice outside that ecosystem; see Ubiquiti’s store.
UPS Protects against short power interruptions and brownouts. Does not normally recover an internet lockup while equipment remains powered.
Dual-WAN or cellular failover Maintains service when the primary ISP fails. Costs and complexity are higher than a reboot solution.

When is it a good buy?

Good fit

  • A manual power cycle consistently restores service.
  • Failures are intermittent and unattended access matters.
  • The equipment is remote or difficult to reach.
  • You want an appliance rather than designing local automation.

Poor fit

  • The dominant problem is an ISP outage, weak coverage, cabling, or failing hardware.
  • You need graceful shutdown or cannot tolerate false-positive resets.
  • Modem and router require sequencing that your chosen setup cannot provide.
  • Your Wi‑Fi security mode is unsupported by the exact model.
  • You want a general smart outlet at the lowest cost.

Questions to answer before purchase

  1. Does the exact model support your Wi‑Fi security mode?
  2. Can its tests suit your fiber, cable, DSL, 5G, satellite, or fixed-wireless connection?
  3. Does automatic recovery work locally, and is a cloud account optional?
  4. What happens after repeated failures?
  5. Can power-off, boot-delay, timeout, and reset limits be changed?
  6. Can it avoid rebooting when only its own Wi‑Fi link is lost?
  7. Can modem and router be controlled and sequenced?
  8. What are the exact regional electrical ratings and certifications?
  9. What happens if Keep Connect itself loses power or configuration?

Verdict

Keep Connect is a useful niche tool when a stuck modem or router reliably recovers after a power cycle. Its important advantage over a basic smart plug is the combination of connectivity testing, local outlet control, retry limits, and optional monitoring. Buy it to automate a known recovery procedure—not as a cure for an ISP outage or an unidentified network fault. If uptime is critical because the internet connection itself fails, investigate backup connectivity or dual-WAN instead.
