JBOD means “Just a Bunch of Disks” (sometimes “Just a Bunch of Drives”): a group of disks used without configuring them as a redundant RAID array. Depending on the system, the disks may appear separately, or software may combine them into one larger logical volume. JBOD itself does not provide RAID redundancy.

What does JBOD mean?

JBOD is a storage arrangement in which multiple disks are used without being configured as a redundant array. Microsoft Learn defines it as a collection of hard disks that have not been configured to act as a redundant array in its Exchange Server storage configuration guidance.

The name does not guarantee one particular presentation to the computer. Some systems expose each physical disk as its own volume. Others concatenate several disks so that the operating system sees one larger volume. Check the documentation for the enclosure, controller, or operating system to learn which behavior applies.

How is JBOD different from RAID?

RAID combines disks according to a defined arrangement, which may provide features such as mirroring or parity. Basic JBOD does not add that kind of redundancy. Western Digital describes its independent-disk mode as having no striping, mirroring, or parity; see its JBOD overview.

Configuration How disks may appear Redundancy Capacity presentation
Independent-disk JBOD Each disk appears as a separate unit. JBOD does not provide RAID redundancy. Capacity remains available disk by disk.
Concatenated disk set Several disks appear as one logical volume. Concatenation is not, by itself, RAID redundancy. Disk capacities are combined into a larger volume.
RAID Disks are configured as an array; presentation depends on the RAID arrangement. Depends on the selected RAID arrangement. Depends on the selected RAID arrangement.

JBOD and RAID are not universal performance labels: the sources do not establish a general rule that one is faster. Performance depends on the particular setup and workload.

Why use JBOD?

  • Keep disks independent: Separate presentation can make each disk available as its own unit.
  • Combine capacity logically: Apple calls a concatenated set of smaller disks JBOD in its Disk Utility guide. Apple notes that this can provide a single disk large enough for a file that would not fit on any one disk.
  • Use a documented storage layout: Microsoft’s Exchange Server guidance describes storing a database and its associated logs on one disk in an Exchange JBOD arrangement. This is a specific configuration example, not a recommendation for every system.

Does JBOD protect data if a disk fails?

No. Do not treat JBOD as a data-protection method. In an independent-disk arrangement, a failed disk can make the data stored on that disk unavailable. A concatenated volume also does not become redundant just because it spans multiple disks. Keep a separate backup, or choose a separately configured resiliency system if continued access after a disk failure is required.

What should you check before using a JBOD enclosure?

  1. Find out how disks are presented. Confirm whether the enclosure exposes each disk separately or combines them into one volume; the term JBOD is used for both behaviors.
  2. Check compatibility. Verify that the enclosure, controller or adapter, host computer, operating system, and storage software support the intended setup.
  3. For Windows Storage Spaces, follow Microsoft’s deployment guidance. Microsoft says a JBOD enclosure is optional and recommends verifying enclosure support. Its instructions also discuss using a simple HBA or disabling RAID functionality for that specific Storage Spaces setup. See Microsoft’s stand-alone Storage Spaces deployment guide; these are not universal requirements for all JBOD configurations.
