ISO noise reduction is camera processing that makes image noise less noticeable, especially in photos taken at high ISO sensitivities. Stronger reduction can also smooth fine texture and outlines. It is separate from long-exposure noise reduction on the Canon and Fujifilm cameras cited here, and its effect on RAW files depends on the camera and file mode.

What image noise is—and what causes it

Noise is not simply a flaw caused by turning ISO up. ISO 15739:2023 defines it as “unwanted variations in the response of an imaging system.” It identifies several possible sources, including photon shot noise, dark-current shot noise, sensor readout noise and quantization noise from analog-to-digital conversion. Noise may also be temporal or fixed-pattern.

Its amount depends on conditions such as exposure time, aperture, ISO sensitivity and camera temperature. Internal processing can change the noise that appears in the image, too. The standard describes ways to measure noise; it does not predict how a particular camera’s reduction setting will look. ISO 15739:2023

High-ISO noise reduction versus long-exposure noise reduction

These controls address different shooting conditions. High-ISO noise reduction is intended for noise that becomes more noticeable at higher sensitivities. Long-exposure noise reduction targets issues associated with longer sensor exposures, including fixed-pattern noise or mottling. A camera may offer them as separate settings; the labels and implementation vary by model.

High-ISO noise reduction Noise in images made at high sensitivities Canon describes it as addressing luminance and chrominance noise; Fujifilm’s X-T5 manual says higher values reduce noise but smooth outlines.
Long-exposure noise reduction Noise associated with long sensor exposures Canon says its EOS implementation activates at shutter speeds of two seconds or longer. Fujifilm’s X-T5 manual says it can reduce mottling and increases save times.

The two-second threshold is Canon-specific, not a general camera rule. Likewise, Fujifilm’s save-time warning describes the X-T5 manual’s guidance, not every camera. Canon U.S.A.’s explanation of in-camera noise reduction and the Fujifilm X-T5 image-quality settings manual explain these examples.

What the setting does to image detail

Noise reduction is processing applied to the image; it does not change how much light was captured in an exposure that has already been made. It can make noise less prominent, but stronger processing may blur or smooth fine texture and outlines. Fujifilm’s X-T5 manual makes that trade-off explicit: “Choose higher values to reduce noise and smooth outlines, lower values to leave outlines visible.”

Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 16MP Compact Digital Camera, 5X Optical Zoom, Black
  • 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
  • Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
  • Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
  • Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
  • Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life

There is no single setting that is best for every image. If you want a clean-looking JPEG straight from the camera, you may prefer more reduction. If preserving texture and choosing your own processing later matters more, a lower setting may suit you. Treat this as a preference to evaluate on your camera, not a universal ON/OFF prescription.

Does ISO noise reduction affect RAW files?

Do not assume that it always does—or never does. The answer can depend on both camera and file mode. Canon says its usual High ISO NR settings can be used by RAW shooters, but its Multi-Shot Noise Reduction option is unavailable for RAW images. Sony’s cited help guide says High ISO NR does not work for RAW images when the file format is RAW & JPEG. Those examples show why a setting’s behavior must be checked for the exact camera and mode.

How to choose a setting on your camera

  1. Identify the control. Check whether the menu item is High ISO NR, Long Exposure NR, or both; they are not interchangeable.
  2. Decide where you want processing. Consider whether you want cleaner-looking JPEGs straight from camera or prefer to manage noise processing later.
  3. Check RAW and JPEG behavior. Consult your camera’s manual for the selected file format and mode rather than relying on another brand’s behavior.
  4. Balance noise against detail. Compare the available reduction levels for your own images, paying attention to fine texture and edges as well as visible noise.
  5. Account for capture delays. If you shoot a sequence of long exposures, check whether long-exposure NR extends the time before the camera can save or take another frame. Fujifilm explicitly warns of increased save times on the X-T5.
