GPT is OpenAI’s term for its generative pre-trained transformer models. An LLM (large language model) is the broader technology category, while ChatGPT is the service people use to interact with underlying models and tools. Models come in different options because capability, reasoning depth, speed, cost, usage limits, and availability involve trade-offs—not because every higher-sounding tier is automatically better.
What is GPT?
OpenAI uses “GPT” as short for generative pre-trained transformer. Its API documentation describes GPT models as trained to understand natural and formal language and to generate text or code, summarize, converse, and write creatively. OpenAI API documentation: Key concepts
In ordinary use, GPT refers to a model or model family—not the entire application through which someone chats with it. A model processes input and generates output; a product can wrap that model in an interface and add tools or other capabilities.
What’s the difference between GPT, an LLM, and ChatGPT?
| Term | What it means | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| LLM | A large language model: the broad category of models that interpret language requests and produce responses. | The technology category. |
| GPT | OpenAI’s term for its generative pre-trained transformer models. | A model label or family within the broader landscape of language models. |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI’s user-facing service, which uses underlying models and tools to respond to instructions. | The application or service people interact with. |
OpenAI Academy describes LLMs as central to ChatGPT and notes that models can power different products. OpenAI Academy: Models A useful analogy is that “LLM” names a broad kind of technology, “GPT” names OpenAI’s model family, and “ChatGPT” is one service built around models. Like most analogies, this is simplified: the service can include tools and modalities beyond a GPT text model alone.

ChatGPT is not the name of one fixed model. OpenAI’s first ChatGPT announcement in November 2022 described a conversationally tuned model, which is historical context rather than a complete definition of the current service. Why are there different GPT model tiers?
“Tier” is a useful way to describe different model options, not a universal technical ranking. Options may be tuned or configured for different balances of task capability, reasoning depth, speed, cost, reliability, and access. OpenAI Academy contrasts quick, efficient models with options intended for greater accuracy and reasoning. OpenAI Academy: Models
Rank #2
- Task capability and reasoning depth: A multi-step analysis or difficult problem may benefit from an option that spends more effort reasoning; a straightforward request may not need it.
- Speed and throughput: Faster options can suit routine or high-volume work. More deliberate reasoning may take longer.
- Cost and usage: Choices can carry different cost profiles and usage allowances. In ChatGPT, limits can depend on plan, model, and workspace settings. OpenAI Help Center: GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro in ChatGPT
- Availability: The same named option may not be available in ChatGPT, the API, Work, or Codex in the same way. Plans, workspace controls, app versions, and staged rollouts can affect access.
These dimensions do not combine into one simple “best” score. Choose based on the task and constraints: quick drafting differs from a complex reasoning task, and a more capable option may not be worth extra time or limited usage for a simple question. A model tier is not a guarantee that an answer is correct; verify consequential claims against reliable primary sources.
How can one model family include fast and reasoning options?
OpenAI’s GPT-5 System Card, published August 7, 2025, offers a dated example of a tiered system. It describes GPT-5 as a unified system combining a fast model for most questions, a deeper reasoning model for harder problems, and a real-time router that selects based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and explicit intent. OpenAI: GPT-5 System Card
“GPT‑5 is a unified system with a smart and fast model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model for harder problems, and a real-time router that quickly decides which model to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and explicit intent (for example, if you say “think hard about this” in the prompt).”
This example explains why a model family can contain differentiated options and automatic routing. It describes the system as presented in August 2025; it is not a complete description of the model catalog in 2026.

What model options are available in ChatGPT in 2026?
As of October 7, 2026, OpenAI’s Help Center described GPT-5.6 options with Instant and adjustable reasoning levels on eligible plans, along with Pro options for difficult or longer-running tasks. The page said Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna, while eligible paid accounts may have GPT-5.6 Sol options. It listed GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, for specified Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, subject to workspace permissions. Some options were rolling out, and limits depended on plan, model, and workspace. OpenAI Help Center: GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro in ChatGPT
Those names and entitlements are a dated snapshot, not a promise of what every account will show. Check the live model picker and current plan information for your account; access can vary by plan, workspace, rollout, and product surface.
Quick Recap
How should you choose between model options?
- Match the option to the task. Use a quick option for routine requests where a fast response is sufficient; consider a deeper reasoning option for complex, multi-step work.
- Account for the trade-off. Consider response time, available usage, and any applicable cost—not just the model name or tier label.
- Check where you will use it. Confirm that the option is available in the relevant product and under your plan and workspace settings.
- Verify important outputs. A model can still make mistakes, so check high-stakes facts, calculations, and advice against authoritative sources.
