German Unity Day, or Tag der Deutschen Einheit, is Germany’s national public holiday marking the formal reunification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990. The date is the anniversary of the Unification Treaty taking effect—not the day the Berlin Wall opened, which was November 9, 1989.
What German Unity Day commemorates
On October 3, 1990, the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) acceded to the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), making reunification legally effective. The treaty’s accession provisions took effect at midnight. The Basic Law then applied in the five eastern Länder named in the treaty and throughout Berlin. The federal flag was raised before the Reichstag during the public celebrations. The Federal Government’s chronology of October 3, 1990 records these events.
The holiday marks that formal political unity. It also recalls the peaceful changes that made it possible, but it does not treat every milestone in the process as if it happened on the same day.
Why the holiday is October 3, not November 9
The Unification Treaty set October 3 as the legal holiday because that was the date the treaty took effect. It was signed in Berlin on August 31, 1990, by Federal Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble and GDR State Secretary Günther Krause. The Federal Government describes the agreement as a 900-page document covering the details of reunification and transitional arrangements. The government’s account of the treaty signing explains its holiday designation.

November 9, 1989, is the date the Berlin Wall opened after months of protests in the GDR. That was a decisive turning point, but it was not the legal act of reunification. On August 23, 1990, the GDR People’s Chamber voted to accede to the Federal Republic under Article 23 of the Basic Law; the treaty followed, then took effect on October 3. Deutschland.de’s overview of October 3 distinguishes the Wall’s opening from formal unity.
| Date | Milestone | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| November 9, 1989 | The Berlin Wall opened. | A turning point in the peaceful revolution; not formal reunification. |
| August 23, 1990 | The GDR People’s Chamber voted to accede to the Federal Republic. | The decision to proceed with accession. |
| August 31, 1990 | The Unification Treaty was signed. | The agreement set out reunification arrangements and named October 3 as the holiday. |
| October 3, 1990 | The treaty took effect at midnight. | Formal reunification took effect and German Unity Day was established. |
How October 3 replaced June 17
Before reunification, West Germany observed June 17 as its “Day of German Unity.” The date commemorated the suppression of the 1953 uprising in East Germany. The Unification Treaty replaced that observance with October 3, the date the accession provisions took effect. The treaty account documents the change.

What the date means
German Unity Day connects a legal milestone with the broader story of a country divided after the Second World War and reunited after the peaceful revolution in East Germany. At the 1990 celebrations, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker said: “In freier Selbstbestimmung wollen wir die Einheit und Freiheit Deutschlands vollenden”—“In free self-determination, we want to complete Germany’s unity and freedom.” The Federal Government’s chronology of the day attributes the statement to him.
