Short answer: Gemini is Google’s multimodal generative-AI ecosystem. It includes the Gemini chatbot and mobile assistant, the underlying Gemini model family, AI features in Google Search and Workspace, and developer tools such as Google AI Studio and the Gemini API.
The Gemini app can work with text, images, files, audio, and video. Depending on the product, account, country, device, model, and subscription, it can also search the web, analyze Google content, generate images, conduct research, write and debug code, hold a live voice conversation, and perform selected actions in Google services. It is therefore more than simply Google’s answer to ChatGPT: it is an AI layer spread across much of Google’s ecosystem.
Last checked: August 10, 2026. Google changes Gemini’s model names, routing, limits, interface labels, plan benefits, and regional availability frequently. The qualifications in this guide matter.
Gemini in one sentence
Gemini is Google’s changing family of multimodal AI models and the consumer chatbot and assistant interface built around them. It can accept and produce different kinds of content, including text, images, audio, video, and files, while some versions can use Google Search, connected apps, or developer-provided tools.
#1 Best Overall
- - Chatting with AI characters
- - Role-playing games with AI
- - Voice call with AI characters
- - Create your character
- - Get AI answers for any question
That definition contains two separate ideas:
- Gemini models are the underlying AI systems developed by Google and Google DeepMind.
- Gemini Apps are the consumer web and mobile experiences where people chat with those models.
Google also uses the Gemini name for related products and features in Android, Search, Gmail, Docs, Drive, Google AI Studio, Google Cloud, and the Gemini API. The same name does not mean that all of those products have identical features, privacy terms, models, or usage limits.
The Gemini name is used for several different things
This is the most important distinction for anyone trying to understand Google’s AI products.
| Term | What it means | Who normally uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini models | The underlying AI systems that generate responses, analyze content, reason, write code, or power other Google products. | Everyone indirectly; developers and Google product teams directly. |
| Gemini Apps | The consumer chatbot at gemini.google.com and its Android and iOS apps. | General users, students, professionals, and families. |
| Gemini Live | A real-time voice conversation mode in the mobile apps, with camera and screen sharing on eligible Android devices. | Mobile users who want to talk rather than type. |
| Gemini on Android | Gemini working through the Google app as a phone assistant, replacing or supplementing Google Assistant on supported devices. | Android phone and tablet owners. |
| Gemini in Workspace | AI features inside products such as Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Meet, and related Google Workspace services. | Work and school users, subject to edition and administrator settings. |
| Gemini in Search and AI Mode | A Search-specific experience that is separate from the general Gemini chatbot, even though both use Google AI. | People looking for AI-assisted search results. |
| Gemini API | Programmatic access to selected models and tools for building applications. | Software developers and businesses. |
| Google AI Studio | A browser-based environment for experimenting with Gemini models, prompts, tools, and API keys. | Developers and advanced users. |
Google DeepMind’s model directory also lists specialized systems for image, video, music, audio, embeddings, and other tasks. Those systems may work alongside Gemini rather than being interchangeable with the general-purpose chatbot.

Google launched its consumer chatbot as Bard in March 2023. On February 8, 2024, Google renamed Bard to Gemini and began using the Gemini name for the consumer chatbot and its paid advanced experience. Google’s announcement is available in its Bard-to-Gemini rebrand post.
The rebrand unified the chatbot around Google’s Gemini model family, but it did not turn every Google AI feature into one identical product. Older articles may still mention Bard, Gemini Advanced, Gemini 1.5, Gemini 2.0, or Gemini 2.5. Those names can describe an earlier point in the product’s development, a developer model, or a former subscription label.
Which Gemini models are available?
There is no single permanently fixed Gemini model. Google can change how the consumer app routes a request, which model names appear in the picker, and which models are available to each plan. The consumer model picker and the Gemini API model catalog do not necessarily expose the same models at the same time.
As of the date above, Google’s consumer help documentation describes models and reasoning levels including:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Label | General role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3 Flash-Lite | A lighter, faster option for everyday use and higher-volume requests. | Access and limits depend on the consumer app, plan, and rollout. |
| Gemini 3 Flash | A general-purpose model aimed at a balance of speed and capability. | It is not necessarily the default model for every user or request. |
| Gemini 3 Pro | A more capable option for difficult prompts, longer work, and demanding reasoning. | Expanded access may require a Google AI plan. |
| Standard, Extended, and Deep Think | Reasoning levels that may determine how much computation Gemini applies to a request. | Deep Think access is associated with eligible Ultra access and is not available for every account. |
Google’s current plan information also refers to expanded access to models such as Gemini 3.1 Pro, while the developer documentation lists separately named API models including Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite as generally available. These names should not be treated as contradictions: consumer and developer catalogs are separate, and Google changes both over time. For an application, use the latest API model documentation rather than assuming that the model shown in the chatbot is available through the API.
Specialized Google AI systems include the following:
- Nano Banana 2 is the current image-generation and image-editing system identified in the Gemini Apps help documentation. Nano Banana Pro can be available for regeneration to eligible paid subscribers.
- Veo is associated with video generation.
- Lyria is associated with music generation.
- Gemini Audio supports audio-related interactions and capabilities in eligible products.
- Imagen is Google’s separate image-generation model family in some products.
- Gemini Embedding is intended for embedding and retrieval use cases rather than ordinary chatbot conversations.
See Google DeepMind’s current model directory for the broader model landscape.
What can Gemini do?
The most useful way to understand Gemini is by task rather than by model name.
Answer questions and explain difficult topics
Gemini can answer questions, compare options, explain technical ideas, translate text, brainstorm possibilities, and adjust an explanation to a requested reading level. It can also ask follow-up questions or continue a conversation about the same topic.
An answer is not automatically a web search. Depending on the experience and prompt, it may come from the model’s training, Google Search grounding, a connected Google service, or another tool. Look for source links or Search and connected-app indicators when current information matters.
Write, rewrite, summarize, and translate
Gemini is useful for drafting emails, outlines, reports, cover letters, lesson plans, social posts, product descriptions, and meeting summaries. It can rewrite text for a different tone, shorten a long passage, identify themes, suggest headlines, translate content, and turn notes into a more organized document.
It should be treated as a drafting and editing assistant rather than an authority. Gemini can invent facts, quotations, citations, names, and details even when the prose sounds confident. Google’s basic Gemini help page warns users to check important answers.
Study and learn
Gemini can explain a subject at different levels, work through a problem step by step, generate practice questions, make quizzes, and help a learner identify gaps in understanding. It can summarize uploaded notes, PDFs, and other study material. Eligible experiences also include guided-learning workflows, Canvas-based quizzes, and Audio Overviews.
A useful study prompt asks Gemini to explain the concept, show the reasoning, provide a similar problem, and then quiz you without revealing the answer immediately. Do not use it as an unquestioned substitute for a teacher, textbook, doctor, or academic source: it can solve a problem incorrectly or give a plausible but wrong explanation. Google describes its student-focused capabilities in its student tools announcement.
Research current information
Gemini can use Google Search grounding in relevant experiences, but the strongest research workflow is a separate feature called Deep Research. Deep Research plans a research process, gathers current information, and produces a report rather than just answering with a short paragraph.
Google’s current Deep Research documentation says that Google Search is included by default. Where eligible, users can also add Gmail, Drive, uploaded files, or NotebookLM notebooks as sources. Google AI Pro and Ultra users can generate reports with expanded access to the Pro model, and Ultra reports may include visual material such as charts, diagrams, schematics, or interactive simulators.

Deep Research is still an AI-generated report. Open the cited sources, check the dates, and verify whether each source actually supports the statement. A long report with links is not the same as independently verified research. See Google’s Deep Research help page.
Analyze images, screenshots, files, audio, and video
Gemini is multimodal, which means a user can combine a written instruction with an image, screenshot, document, audio clip, or video where the relevant interface supports that input. Examples include asking what a chart shows, extracting details from a receipt, reviewing a presentation, summarizing notes, or explaining an error shown in a screenshot.
Multimodal input has limits. The model can misread small text, miss an object or scene detail, misunderstand an audio recording, or overlook information in a long video. For consequential decisions, inspect the original material rather than relying only on Gemini’s summary.
Generate and edit images
In Gemini Apps, Google’s current help documentation identifies Nano Banana 2 as the image-generation and editing system. After signing in, eligible users can ask for an image from a text prompt, upload an image for changes, combine multiple images, make localized edits, create diagrams or infographics, and request text inside an image.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Some eligible users can connect Google Photos for personalized image workflows. Google currently restricts that personalization to eligible users in the United States, and it may not be available in every U.S. region. Paid plans can affect output resolution and access to Nano Banana Pro regeneration.
Image generation requires sign-in. Image generation and editing have different age requirements, and Google’s current documentation says editing is unavailable to users under 18. Copyright, privacy, impersonation, and other safety policies also apply. Check the image-generation help page before assuming a feature is available on your account.
Generate video, music, and audio where available
Google’s wider AI ecosystem includes video, music, and audio generation through products and subscription plans. Veo, Lyria, and Gemini Audio are examples of specialized systems associated with those capabilities.
That does not mean every Gemini user can create unlimited videos, songs, or audio. Availability can depend on country, age, account, product, model, quota, subscription, and rollout. Google’s AI plan matrix is the appropriate place to check current access.

Code, debug, and build small projects
Gemini can explain code, generate functions, suggest tests, troubleshoot error messages, translate between programming languages, and review code pasted or uploaded into an eligible experience. Canvas can also help create or edit code, simple web pages, and small applications.
Developer-facing Gemini models add capabilities such as code execution, function calling, structured output, file search, and computer-use features, depending on the model and API. Those capabilities belong to the developer platform and should not be assumed to exist in the consumer chatbot. The API model catalog and Interactions API documentation specify which tools each model supports.
Talk naturally with Gemini Live
Gemini Live is a free-flowing voice conversation mode. You can interrupt it, change subjects, brainstorm aloud, practice a language or presentation, and ask follow-up questions without typing each turn. On eligible Android devices, Live can also stream camera video or share the phone screen.
Live is a mobile feature, not a feature of the Gemini web app. On Android, it requires an eligible phone or tablet, the Gemini app or Gemini as the mobile assistant, sign-in, and an age of 18 or older. Connected-app support in Live is being rolled out gradually. Some actions can be undone while Live remains open, but background actions and some manufacturer-specific actions may not be undoable. Android and iOS requirements and feature availability differ. See Google’s Gemini Live documentation.
Work in Canvas
Canvas is an editable workspace inside Gemini for collaborating on a document, app, slide deck, quiz, infographic, web page, Audio Overview, or code project. It is more structured than a normal chat because you can revise the output in the workspace, then share or export it.
Typical exports include text to Google Docs, slides to Google Slides or PDF, and copied content for use elsewhere. To start Canvas, open Gemini, select Add files or Add below the prompt box, choose Canvas, and describe what you want to create. Use Share & export when finished. The Canvas help page lists current options.
Create Gems for repeatable tasks
Gems are customized versions of Gemini configured for a recurring task. You can give a Gem a role, workflow, style, or set of instructions—for example, a study coach that uses a particular questioning method or an editor that follows a house style.
A Gem is not a separately trained foundation model. It is a customized interface and instruction configuration built on Gemini’s available capabilities. Gems are useful when you repeatedly provide the same directions, but they inherit the model’s limitations and access restrictions. See Google’s Gems documentation.
Use connected Google services
With connected apps, Gemini can work with eligible information and services such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Tasks, Keep, YouTube, YouTube Music, Maps, Flights, Hotels, and some third-party or device apps. The precise list depends on account type, location, product, and rollout.
Examples include asking Gemini to find and summarize an email or Drive document, check a calendar, create a Calendar event, create a Task, or save a note to Keep. Personal accounts generally need the service connected and Gemini Apps Activity enabled. A work or school account may also require the administrator to enable the relevant Workspace capability.

Connected access is useful but not equivalent to unrestricted access to your Google account. Google lists limitations such as the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| What users often assume | What the connected-app workflow may actually allow |
|---|---|
| Gemini can see everything in Drive. | It cannot generally access all Drive content, including images and videos through the listed Workspace connected-app workflow. |
| Gemini can edit any Workspace file. | Google lists restrictions around creating or deleting ordinary Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and spreadsheets through the connected-app workflow. |
| Gemini can manage Drive like a file manager. | It may not move files or create folders through that workflow. |
| Gemini sees every comment and image in Gmail or Docs. | Access to all comments and images is not guaranteed. |
| Gemini can count all messages or calculate storage use. | Google says it cannot necessarily count every Gmail or Drive item or report storage usage accurately. |
| The result is always the newest matching email. | Gemini may retrieve an older email rather than the most recent relevant message. |
To use a connected service, start a new conversation, explicitly name the service or select it with @ when available, authorize the connection if prompted, and inspect the sources shown after the response. Open the underlying email or document before acting on the result. The main connected-app documentation describes the current restrictions.
Gemini’s main surfaces: which one should you use?
| Surface | Best for | What makes it different |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini web app | Longer chats, file analysis, writing, research, image creation, Canvas, and Gems. | Accessible at gemini.google.com in supported browsers; it is not the same interface as Google Search. |
| Gemini Android app or assistant | Voice requests, camera and screen context, phone assistance, and natural-language actions. | Can be selected as the primary mobile assistant through the Google app on supported Android devices. |
| Gemini iOS app | Text and voice chats, Live where available, image generation, and camera-based input. | It does not become the system-wide default assistant on iPhone in the same way as Android. |
| Gemini Live | Spoken brainstorming, practice, real-time conversation, and camera or screen discussion. | Mobile-only and subject to device, age, account, and regional requirements. |
| Gemini in Workspace | Drafting and summarizing work or school content inside Google’s productivity tools. | Access depends on Workspace edition and administrator controls. |
| Gemini in Search and AI Mode | Search-oriented questions and discovering information on the web. | Search-specific behavior and availability; it is not simply the Gemini web app embedded everywhere. |
| Google AI Studio or Gemini API | Testing prompts, selecting models, building software, and adding tools or structured output. | Developer billing, quotas, model IDs, API keys, and data terms are separate from the consumer subscription. |
How to use Gemini
Start a basic web chat
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Enter a question or instruction.
- Choose Add files if you need to provide supported documents or other material.
- Submit the prompt and read the response, including any cited sources.
- Ask a follow-up question or edit the original prompt if the result needs correction.
Some basic web functions may work while signed out. Google generally requires sign-in for saved history, file uploads, image generation, connected services, Gems, and personalized functions. Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edge or Edgium among supported desktop browsers. Requirements can vary by country, language, account, and age.
Select a model or thinking level
- Open Gemini in the web app.
- Select the model name near the Gemini logo or open the model picker.
- Choose an available model.
- If the option is shown, select a thinking level such as Standard or Extended.
Google’s current help documentation says that a conversation uses one model. Changing the model in an existing conversation starts a new chat, and the names and choices in the picker can change as Google updates the service. Do not assume that a model called Pro in the consumer app is the same product as a Pro subscription or an API model with Pro in its name.
Connect Gmail, Drive, and other Google services
- Sign in with the Google Account that contains the relevant Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or other data.
- Confirm that Gemini Apps Activity is enabled when the feature requires it.
- Ask Gemini to use the relevant service, or select it with
@in a new conversation. - Authorize the Google Workspace connected app if Gemini prompts you.
- Review the sources and open the original email, document, event, or note before relying on the answer.
For work and school accounts, an administrator may need to enable access. If the option is missing, the cause may be the Workspace edition, administrator policy, account type, region, or an activity setting—not necessarily a broken app.

Start a research request in Gemini and select the Deep Research option when it is available. Review the proposed research plan, allow it to proceed, and inspect the completed report and its sources. You may be able to add Drive, Gmail, uploaded files, or NotebookLM notebooks alongside Google Search, depending on eligibility.
For a dependable result, tell Gemini the geography, date range, source types, definitions, and output format you need. Then check the original sources, especially for prices, laws, medical information, statistics, product availability, and anything published after the model’s knowledge cutoff.
Start Gemini Live on Android
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Tap Live at the bottom, or swipe left.
- Start speaking and interrupt or redirect Gemini naturally.
- Use the camera or screen-share control when those options are available.
- End the session when finished.
On supported devices, you can also say Hey Google, let’s talk Live. Live requires sign-in and is generally restricted to users aged 18 or older. Google’s iOS Live documentation covers the separate iPhone and iPad requirements.
Create something in Canvas
- Open Gemini.
- Select Add files or Add below the prompt box.
- Choose Canvas.
- Describe the document, app, slide deck, quiz, infographic, web page, Audio Overview, or code project.
- Revise it with follow-up prompts or direct edits in the Canvas workspace.
- Use Share & export to copy or export the result.
Make or edit an image
In an eligible signed-in Gemini conversation, ask Gemini to create an image or upload an image and describe the edit. You can request a localized change, combine images, generate a diagram, or ask for legible text in an infographic. If your account offers it, a paid plan may provide higher resolution or a Nano Banana Pro regeneration option. Availability and age restrictions are shown in Google’s image-generation guidance.

Free Gemini versus Google AI plans
There is a useful free tier, but free does not mean unlimited and it does not include every model or feature. Google uses subscription plans to increase access to advanced models, larger context windows, research and media tools, storage, and other Google benefits.
The following is a snapshot of the U.S. personal-account pricing and benefits shown on Google’s plan pages. Prices and benefits differ by country and can change, so check Google One’s live plans page before subscribing.
| Plan | U.S. price shown by Google | Relevant Gemini benefit | Other notable benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Google AI plan | Free | Standard access and limits. | No paid AI-plan storage bundle. |
| Google AI Plus | $9.99 per month | Two times the standard Gemini usage limits. | 2 TB of storage. |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 per month | Four times the standard Gemini usage limits, plus expanded Pro-model and Deep Research access. | 5 TB of storage. |
| Google AI Ultra | Check Google’s current page | The highest access levels, Deep Think, and Gemini Agent in eligible U.S. contexts, among other benefits. | Additional Google benefits; exact access varies. |
Google introduced AI Pro in 2025 as the plan that replaced and expanded Gemini Advanced. Gemini Advanced is therefore mainly a historical label in current consumer-plan discussions; it is not a reason to assume that every older article’s model or benefit list remains current. See Google’s AI Pro announcement.
Gemini limits are based on computation, not just prompt counts
Google describes consumer-app limits as compute-based. Your available usage can depend on the selected model, prompt complexity, conversation length, tools, media, current system capacity, and subscription. The support page currently describes limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly limit is reached, but Google can change the rules without notice.
Google currently lists relative levels of approximately:
- No AI plan: standard limits.
- AI Plus: two times the standard limits.
- AI Pro: four times the standard limits.
- AI Ultra: five times or 20 times AI Pro limits, depending on the subscription and feature.
These are access multipliers, not a promise that every prompt receives the same model or that a plan provides unlimited use. If you reach a limit, Gemini may ask you to wait, switch models, or use a lower-access option.
Context windows are not accuracy guarantees
Google’s current consumer support page lists these context-window tiers:
| Plan | Context window listed by Google |
|---|---|
| No AI plan | 32,000 tokens |
| AI Plus | 128,000 tokens |
| AI Pro and Ultra | 1 million tokens |
A context window is the amount of text, code, and other model input that can be considered in one interaction. A larger window is valuable for long books, large codebases, and multiple documents, but it does not guarantee that Gemini will notice every detail or reason correctly across a very large upload. For important material, ask targeted questions, cite page or section numbers, and verify the answer against the original file. See Google’s current model and limits documentation.

A Google One AI subscription pays for consumer features and storage. It does not automatically provide unlimited Gemini API usage or make API calls free. Developers use API keys, model-specific quotas, token pricing, and separate tool charges.
For example, Google’s current API pricing documentation lists Gemini 3.6 Flash at $1.50 per million input tokens and $7.50 per million output tokens, including thinking tokens, with separate charges possible for tools such as Google Search or Maps grounding. Pricing and model availability can change; consult the official API pricing page and latest model page before building a project.

Availability and device requirements
Web
Gemini is available at gemini.google.com subject to country, language, browser, account, and age restrictions. Basic signed-out use may be available in some locations, but saved chats, uploads, image generation, connected apps, Gems, and personalized functions generally require sign-in.
Android
Google lists the Gemini Android app for phones and tablets running Android 9 or newer with at least 2 GB of RAM. Android Go is not supported according to Google’s current requirements. Country, language, device, account, age, and rollout restrictions still apply. See Google’s mobile availability page.
On supported Android devices, Gemini can become the primary mobile assistant when the Google app is selected as the device’s default digital-assistant app. The exact setup is described in Google’s Android setup documentation.
iPhone and iPad
Google lists the Gemini iOS app for iPhones and iPads running iOS 16 or newer. It supports text and voice chats, image generation, and camera-based input, with Live available where supported. Gemini does not become the system-wide default assistant on iPhone in the same way it can on Android. See Google’s iOS availability information.
Age and account restrictions
- Personal users generally need to be at least 13, or the applicable local minimum age.
- Gemini Live and some advanced features require users to be 18 or older.
- Work and school access generally requires a supported Workspace edition and administrator enablement.
- Family Link and supervised accounts have additional restrictions.
- Signed-out access and age requirements can differ in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Google’s account and access documentation is more reliable than assuming that a feature available to one Google Account will appear on another.
What happened to Google Assistant?
Google is moving the mobile assistant experience from Google Assistant to Gemini. In a March 2025 announcement, Google said classic Assistant would no longer be accessible on most mobile devices later that year, with tablets, cars, headphones, watches, and other experiences transitioning over time.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not interpret that as meaning Google Assistant has disappeared from every Google device. Current support pages continue to distinguish Android phones from Android Auto, wearables, Google Home products, and other Assistant-powered experiences. Gemini has gained many assistant functions, but device controls, languages, third-party integrations, and older actions vary. Google’s transition announcement and Android Auto guidance provide the current product-specific wording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy: what happens to Gemini chats and uploads?
Privacy depends heavily on the account and setting. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini may collect and process prompts, spoken requests, uploaded files and media, screens, generated content, device and browser information, interactions, location data, connected Google and third-party app information, saved instructions, Gems, and personalization information.
When Keep Activity is on
With Keep Activity enabled:
- Chats and shared content are saved in Gemini Apps Activity.
- Google says it may use that activity to provide, develop, and improve its services, including generative-AI models.
- A subset of chats may be reviewed by trained human reviewers or service providers.
- Chats selected for review are disconnected from the Google Account and may be retained for up to three years.
- Deleting your activity does not necessarily delete copies that were already reviewed and disconnected from your account.
When Keep Activity is off or a chat is temporary
Google says material from chats made with Keep Activity off, or from temporary chats, may be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service, maintain functionality, and protect users and Google. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models under the stated policy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
There is an important exception: if Keep Activity is off and you submit feedback, the associated conversation and feedback may still be used for service improvement. Turning off Gemini Apps Activity also does not automatically erase data stored by other Google services.
Voice, video, and screen sharing
Gemini Live transcripts and recordings can be among the information processed by Gemini. Google says audio and Live video or screen-share data are not used to improve Google services by default, although users can choose to allow that use through relevant settings. Check the current audio and Live controls instead of assuming that every voice interaction has identical handling.
Connected data and Personal Intelligence
Eligible users can optionally connect services such as Google Photos, YouTube, Workspace, Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News through Personal Intelligence and related controls. Google says connected data can personalize responses, make recommendations, and help Gemini perform tasks.
The trade-off is straightforward: more connected data can make answers more useful, but it gives Gemini access to more information about your messages, files, schedule, photos, viewing habits, travel, and preferences. Review connected services periodically and disconnect anything you no longer need. Eligibility varies; see Google’s Personal Intelligence documentation.
Work and school accounts are a separate privacy case
Workspace accounts are governed by different terms, administrator controls, and product settings. Google’s education documentation says that, under the described Workspace arrangement, chats and uploaded files from school-account use are not reviewed by human reviewers or otherwise used to improve generative-AI models.
That statement should not be generalized to every Google account or every Workspace edition. Organizations and schools should check their administrator settings and applicable Workspace terms before deciding what employees or students may enter. See Google’s education-account documentation.
What Gemini cannot do reliably
Gemini is capable, but it remains a generative AI system. The following assumptions commonly cause problems:
| Assumption | Safer interpretation |
|---|---|
| Gemini answered, so it must have searched the web. | Check for Search grounding, sources, or tool indicators. Some answers come from model knowledge or connected data instead. |
| A citation proves the answer is correct. | Open the source and confirm the date, context, and exact passage. Citations can be incomplete, mismatched, or misunderstood. |
| A Google AI plan gives unlimited Gemini. | Plans provide different compute-based quotas. Model, complexity, conversation length, media, demand, and weekly limits matter. |
| A one-million-token context window means Gemini understood every page. | Large uploads can still contain missed details, extraction errors, or faulty reasoning. Ask focused questions and verify. |
| Connecting Drive gives Gemini unrestricted access. | Drive images and videos, comments, file management, counting, and creation or deletion actions have important restrictions. |
| Turning off history immediately erases a chat. | Google says history-off and temporary material may remain for up to 72 hours, while previously reviewed disconnected copies may remain longer. |
| A public Canvas app is a private shared document. | The creator may see submitted data, and public links may expose or permit editing of saved data. |
| Gemini can perform every Google Assistant action. | Assistant replacement and device-action support vary by product, device, language, account, and rollout. |
| The newest API model is automatically the chatbot’s default. | Consumer-app routing and the developer API catalog are separate. |
For medical, legal, financial, tax, employment, immigration, safety, and other high-stakes questions, use Gemini to prepare questions or summarize reliable material—not as the final authority. Verify current prices, rules, deadlines, schedules, policies, quotations, citations, and calculations independently.
Is Gemini worth using?
Gemini is especially attractive if your daily workflow already includes Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, Maps, Android, or Google Search. Its strongest practical advantage is the possibility of combining a conversational assistant with Google’s services, multimodal input, long-document handling, Search grounding, and a bundled Google One storage plan.

- Ask AI everything
It is also a strong candidate if you want to analyze screenshots and documents, create or edit images, conduct research, talk through a problem with Live, or use an Android assistant that understands natural-language requests rather than only rigid commands.
Gemini may be a poor fit if you do not want an AI provider processing prompts alongside a large Google account ecosystem, if your preferred features are unavailable in your country or language, or if you need fixed model behavior and predictable quotas. It is also not a local or offline AI system, and a paid plan does not guarantee perfect answers, unlimited usage, unrestricted Workspace actions, or every classic Assistant command.
Gemini versus another AI chatbot
There is no universal winner. Choose Gemini when Google integration, Android assistance, Search context, Google Photos, Workspace, multimodal work, or Google’s media tools are the priority. Consider another general-purpose chatbot when you prefer its writing style, ecosystem, privacy arrangement, regional availability, or organization-wide standard.

For building software, use Google AI Studio or the Gemini API when you need programmatic model selection, structured outputs, function calling, file search, or other developer tools.
A sensible Gemini workflow
- Choose the right surface. Use the web app for general work, Live or Android for voice and device context, Workspace for work content, Search or AI Mode for search-oriented discovery, and AI Studio or the API for software.
- State the task and constraints. Include the audience, geography, date, source requirements, desired format, and what Gemini should not assume.
- Provide the relevant source. Upload the document or connect the specific service instead of asking Gemini to guess.
- Ask for uncertainty. Request a list of assumptions, unsupported claims, missing information, and source links.
- Verify before acting. Open citations and original Google content, especially before sending an email, changing a calendar, spending money, publishing content, or making a health or legal decision.
- Review privacy settings. Check Keep Activity, temporary chats, connected apps, Live controls, and whether you are using a personal, work, or school account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gemini free?
Yes, Google offers a free Gemini experience, but access is limited by model, computation, demand, account, country, and feature. Paid Google AI plans add higher limits, larger context windows, selected advanced models, storage, and additional features; they do not mean unlimited use.
Is Gemini the same as Bard?
Bard was Google’s original consumer chatbot, launched in March 2023. Google renamed it Gemini on February 8, 2024. The rebrand unified the chatbot around the Gemini model family, but Google’s Search, Android, Workspace, API, and media products still have different surfaces and rules.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
Neither is universally better. Gemini is particularly compelling for people who use Google Search, Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, Maps, or Android. The better choice depends on the features, privacy terms, regional availability, writing style, and workflow you value.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan Gemini access Gmail and Google Drive?
It can access some Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Tasks, Keep, and other connected services when the account, activity setting, administrator policy, and feature are eligible. It cannot see or manage everything in those services. Google lists restrictions involving Drive media, comments, file management, counting, and creating or deleting files.
Does Google use Gemini chats to train AI?
It depends on the account and setting. With Keep Activity on, Google says activity may be used to provide, develop, and improve services, including generative-AI models, and a subset of chats may be reviewed. With Keep Activity off or in temporary chats, Google says material may be retained for up to 72 hours and temporary chats are not used to train its AI models. Work and school accounts have separate terms and controls.
Can I use Gemini without a Google Account?
Some basic web features may work while signed out in supported locations. Sign-in is generally required for saved history, file uploads, image generation, connected apps, Gems, and personalized functions. Country, language, age, and account rules affect what is available.
Is Gemini available on iPhone?
Yes. Google lists a Gemini app for iPhone and iPad running iOS 16 or newer. iOS supports text and voice chats, image generation, camera input, and Live where available. It does not make Gemini the system-wide default assistant in the same way Android can.
Can Gemini replace Google Assistant?
Gemini is replacing or supplementing Google Assistant on supported Android mobile devices, but the transition is product-specific. Google Assistant may still be present in cars, watches, headphones, Google Home products, and other contexts, and Gemini does not support every older Assistant action on every device.
Can Gemini create images and videos?
Eligible signed-in Gemini users can create and edit images, with current Gemini Apps documentation identifying Nano Banana 2 for that workflow. Video, music, and audio generation are available through selected Google products, models, and plans such as those associated with Veo and Lyria. Country, age, quota, plan, device, and rollout restrictions apply.
What is Gemini Advanced?
Gemini Advanced was the older name for Google’s paid advanced chatbot experience. Google introduced Google AI Pro in 2025 as the plan that replaced and expanded Gemini Advanced. Older articles using the name may describe models, limits, or benefits that are no longer current.
What is Google AI Pro?
Google AI Pro is a consumer subscription. The U.S. plan page currently lists a $19.99 monthly price, 5 TB of storage, four times standard Gemini usage limits, and expanded access to selected Pro models and Deep Research. It is separate from developer API billing and is not a promise of unlimited chatbot use.
Recommended Free Tools
What is Gemini Live?
Gemini Live is a mobile voice-conversation mode that allows natural interruptions and topic changes. On eligible Android devices it can also use camera video and screen sharing. It is not available in the Gemini web app, and age, device, account, language, and regional requirements apply.
What is Deep Research in Gemini?
Deep Research is a research workflow that plans and conducts a more extensive search, then produces a report. Google Search is included by default, and eligible users may add Gmail, Drive, uploaded files, or NotebookLM notebooks. Reports still require source checking because citations do not guarantee accuracy.
What is Canvas in Gemini?
Canvas is an editable Gemini workspace for creating or revising documents, code, simple apps, slide decks, quizzes, infographics, web pages, and Audio Overviews. It can export or share results, but public Canvas apps may expose information entered by users to the creator or people with the link.
What is a Gem?
A Gem is a customized version of Gemini configured with instructions for a repeated task, role, workflow, or style. It is not a separately trained foundation model and remains subject to the underlying model’s limitations, access, and privacy rules.

No. Google AI Pro is a consumer Google One subscription. The Gemini API and Google AI Studio use separate API keys, model catalogs, quotas, pricing, and tool charges. Developers should consult Google’s API pricing and model documentation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Gemini is best understood as Google’s AI ecosystem rather than one chatbot. The web and mobile apps are the easiest entry points, Android and Gemini Live add assistant and voice features, Workspace and connected apps bring Gemini closer to your work, Search provides a separate search-oriented experience, and AI Studio or the API are for developers.
The free version is useful for writing, explanations, study, file analysis, coding help, and selected image features. Google AI plans mainly buy higher limits, larger context, advanced model and research access, media features, and storage—not guaranteed accuracy or unlimited use. Gemini is a particularly logical choice for Google-centric users, but connect only the services you need, understand the activity and retention settings, and verify anything that affects money, health, legal rights, privacy, safety, or reputation.
