Gemini 4 Argon is Google’s new model for complex software engineering, enterprise work, and cybersecurity defense—but it is not generally available. Google began its first external rollout to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program on September 30, 2026. It says paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers are next, but has not announced when that access will begin.

Who can use Gemini 4 Argon?

Google’s September 30 announcement describes a staged release rather than a public launch. The first external cohort is trusted cyber defenders participating in Fairwind. Google is also using Argon internally and says it is participating in the U.S. government’s voluntary pre-release model-access process. Google’s announcement does not give a date for the next stage.

Google says it plans to extend access to paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers after it gathers feedback and continues guardrail work. That is a planned next step, not confirmation that Argon is currently available to those customers. There is no public general-availability date in the announcement.

Fairwind is the program Google is using to work with trusted defenders. Its stated purpose is to get advanced AI capabilities to cybersecurity professionals for defensive use. Google’s Fairwind overview provides context on the program.

What does “guardrail-free” mean?

Google says it plans to make Argon available without cyber guardrails to trusted defenders and its internal teams for defensive work. This is a restricted exception for specified users and purposes—not a general offer of an unrestricted model. The Hacker News also reported the plan on October 1, 2026, attributing it to Google. The Hacker News report.

The distinction matters because a model that can help identify and fix vulnerabilities may also be misused. Google says it is still strengthening safeguards before broader access, including measures addressing cyber and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) misuse. The announcement does not spell out every operational boundary of the restricted guardrail exception.

What can Argon do?

Google presents Argon as a frontier model for long, multi-step software work, enterprise knowledge tasks such as legal and finance, and cybersecurity defense. Its headline capability change is an output limit of up to 1 million tokens, compared with 64,000 previously, according to Google’s September 30 announcement. A larger output allowance may help with lengthy workflows, but it does not mean every task needs—or benefits from—generating that much text.

Google reports these selected results, all from its own September 30 announcement rather than independent hands-on testing:

  • Software engineering: 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1, which Google describes as a state-of-the-art result for long-horizon software-engineering tasks.
  • Business automation: 51.3% on AutomationBench, which Google calls the top result on Zapier’s end-to-end business-function benchmark.
  • Video understanding: 91.7% on LVBench for long-video understanding.
  • Vulnerability remediation: 68% on CWE-bench v1, tied for first, according to Google.

Google also describes examples from its own operations and demonstrations. It says Argon identified more than 300 tebibytes of memory for release in a data-center optimization effort, with total savings estimated at 500 tebibytes to 1 pebibyte. That is an internal example, not an independently audited production outcome. In another example, Google says Argon rewrote 32,000 lines of SIMD code in a Rust port of the libgav1 decoder, which ran 2.7 times faster than the existing Rust port while producing identical video output. Google says critical rewrites undergo automated and manual audits, emulation, and review before production. It also reports one quantum-subroutine example that was 40% better than a published baseline; that figure applies to that specific example, not quantum tasks generally.

How should you read the benchmark claims?

Benchmark scores are useful only with their test conditions. Google’s evaluation methodology says Argon’s scores are generally pass@1, use the highest Gemini API thinking settings, and may average multiple trials for smaller benchmarks. It also says competitor figures generally come from providers’ self-reported results unless noted otherwise.

For two coding comparisons in particular, Google’s methodology says Argon’s DeepSWE v1.1 and Terminal-Bench 4.0 scores were self-computed using its own setup; rival figures came from public leaderboards and system cards or a public leaderboard. A score produced with a different harness or source is not a perfectly like-for-like comparison. These results support specific claims about particular tests, not a conclusion that Argon is “best overall” across cybersecurity, coding, enterprise work, and multimodal tasks.

What has Google said about Argon’s cybersecurity abilities?

Google says Argon can autonomously find, validate, and patch critical software vulnerabilities. It describes using the model in Wiz’s Scan for Good initiative, which Google characterizes as protecting critical public infrastructure by finding and remediating high-risk exposures. Google says an early demonstration uncovered a critical vulnerability that exposed sensitive personal information in healthcare software used by hospitals worldwide. The announcement did not identify the software, so readers cannot independently assess that specific case from the information provided.

Google also says Argon outperformed Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber on vulnerability discovery, attack-surface analysis, and proof-of-concept generation in internal and Wiz benchmarks. Those are company-reported evaluation claims, not independent verification of how the model will perform across real-world security environments.

What safeguards is Google working on?

Google describes several measures it is strengthening as it stages access:

  • Refusals aimed at cyber and CBRN misuse.
  • Adversarial training and red teaming to defend against indirect prompt injection.
  • Monitoring of the model’s reasoning and actions, with the ability to halt execution when necessary.
  • Isolated, sealed sandboxes for high-risk testing.

Google calls Argon its most resilient model yet against indirect prompt injection and cites a Gray Swan benchmark. That is Google’s characterization, not proof that prompt injection or other risks have been eliminated. The company’s description of monitoring and sandboxing likewise explains its stated approach; it does not independently establish how well those controls work in every deployment.

What remains unknown?

Google has not said when paid API customers or Google AI Ultra subscribers will get access, or when the model will become generally available. Its announcement also does not provide an independent evaluation of Argon, identify the healthcare software involved in the reported vulnerability, or establish how its safeguards perform outside Google’s testing. Those limits make the current rollout’s access terms and Google’s attributed claims more definitive than any prediction about broad availability or real-world performance.
