Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel about the Locust Horde’s first emergence on Sera. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic “Dom” Santiago during the invasion’s first days, fourteen years before the original Gears of War, according to The Coalition’s 2024 announcement.
What is Emergence Day?
Emergence Day, often shortened to E-Day, is the pivotal moment when the Locust emerge on Sera and begin their attack. The new game goes back to that invasion’s opening days rather than following the later conflict depicted in the original Gears of War.

Where does E-Day fit in the Gears timeline?
The Coalition says Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the events of the first Gears of War. That relative placement is the clearest confirmed way to locate it in the series chronology; the official sources cited here do not establish an exact in-universe calendar year or the placement of every spin-off, novel, or sequel.
The original game begins after the Locust War is underway, centering on Marcus Fenix’s fight against the Locust. Its official Xbox page also identifies Dominic Santiago as a cooperative campaign partner. E-Day, by contrast, depicts the invasion’s beginning.

Who are the main characters?
The campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, his friend and fellow soldier. Before the Locust invasion, both are Pendulum Wars veterans: they have experience fighting a human conflict, but the Locust threat is a new kind of enemy. The Coalition’s announcement describes this background and the game’s premise in its Xbox Wire announcement.
Does E-Day come before the original game?
In story chronology, yes: it takes place fourteen years earlier. In release order, the original Gears of War came first. So E-Day is a later-announced entry that tells an earlier part of the story.

The official Xbox store listing names Xbox Series X|S and PC, and says the game is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. Platform availability and subscription terms can vary by region or change, so check the listing for current details.
