Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel about the first Locust invasion of Sera. Set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, it follows young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they face the opening days of the attack. As of October 4, 2026, Premium Edition early access is underway; the worldwide launch is scheduled for October 6.
What does “E-Day” mean?
“E-Day” is short for Emergence Day: the moment the Locust Horde rises from beneath Sera and begins its assault on humanity. The game revisits that defining event in the series’ history through the experience of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.
Xbox describes the story as taking place fourteen years before the first Gears of War. Rather than continue the main story with a direct sequel, The Coalition chose an origin story focused on the invasion and the beginnings of the bond between Marcus and Dom. Xbox’s official game page
What is the story and setting?
The setting is Sera at the start of the Locust attack, before the conflict has become the familiar long-running war. The central premise is survival: Marcus and Dom are young soldiers trying to endure the first days of an invasion that catches humanity off guard. The official synopsis establishes that setup without laying out detailed plot turns, so it is possible to understand the premise without spoiling later events in the campaign.

In a June 7, 2026 interview, The Coalition described its intended creative direction in terms of brotherhood, brutality, melancholy beauty, spectacle, and renewed horror. Campaign
Xbox classifies Gears of War: E-Day as a third-person cover-shooter. Its campaign can be played solo, cooperatively online, or in two-player split-screen on console. Online play requires a subscription that includes online multiplayer; split-screen is listed as console-only. Xbox game details

Multiplayer
The announced multiplayer modes are Horde Siege, cooperative player-versus-environment (PvE), and Versus, competitive player-versus-player (PvP). When does it release, and where can you play?
Premium Edition early access began worldwide on October 1, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time (15:00 UTC). The worldwide launch is scheduled for October 6, 2026, at the same time. Xbox lists Series X|S and Windows 10/11, and its FAQ also names Steam. The game is listed for day-one access through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
