Firmware is software and associated data stored in a hardware device to initialize it, control its functions, or provide an interface for its operation. It can be part of a computer’s platform or belong to an individual component such as a router. Firmware is often updateable, but how it works and how it is updated depend on the device.
What firmware means
Firmware is code and data associated with hardware and used to make that hardware operate. It often resides in nonvolatile storage, so it remains available when power is off. A controlled update can replace it on many devices; “firmware” does not mean software that can never change.
Definitions vary by context. NIST’s glossary includes a definition describing programs and data stored in hardware—typically ROM or PROM—that cannot be dynamically modified while those programs execute. That is one context-specific definition, not a universal rule for every modern device. NIST glossary: firmware. NETGEAR’s glossary offers a consumer-oriented description of firmware as software semi-permanently placed in hardware, with routers as an example. NETGEAR: What is firmware?

Firmware operates close to hardware. Depending on its scope, it can initialize hardware, provide services needed to start a system, or control a component’s particular behavior.

Platform firmware starts and supports a computer
A computer’s platform firmware initializes hardware and participates in booting the operating system. The UEFI specification describes an interface between the operating system and platform firmware, including data structures and boot and runtime services. Its purpose is to give operating systems a standard environment across different platform designs. UEFI Specification 2.9A. Microsoft likewise summarizes UEFI firmware as initializing hardware and booting an operating system. Microsoft Learn: UEFI firmware
Device firmware controls a component
A router, accessory, or internal component may have firmware that controls its own functions. For example, NETGEAR describes router firmware as handling behavior such as filtering network traffic. A complex product can contain several components, each with its own firmware and update path.

Firmware, BIOS, UEFI, drivers, and applications
| Term | What it means | How it relates to firmware |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware | Code and data stored in hardware and involved in its operation. | May serve a whole platform or a particular device; its updateability depends on implementation. |
| BIOS | In the cited ACPI terminology, traditional x86 BIOS. | BIOS is not a universal synonym for firmware. The terminology distinguishes traditional BIOS from UEFI Core System BIOS. ACPI Specification 6.5 |
| UEFI | A specification defining an interface between an operating system and platform firmware. | UEFI is not the firmware image for a particular computer; it defines structures and services used in the platform-firmware relationship. |
| Driver | Operating-system software that communicates with a device or exposes its functions to the OS. | A driver can work with device firmware, but the two are distinct. Microsoft Learn: device firmware |
| Application | Higher-level software used for tasks such as writing, browsing, or editing. | It is not synonymous with firmware. The boundary between firmware and embedded software can vary by device. |
Why firmware updates are released
An update can change device behavior after it has shipped. Microsoft’s Component Firmware Update (CFU) specification identifies fixing functional or security issues and adding features as possible reasons for an update; it does not mean every update does all of those things. Microsoft: Component Firmware Update protocol
Whether an update is available, what it changes, and whether a device remains supported are model-specific. Check the manufacturer’s notice for the exact device rather than assuming an update adds features or applies to every version.

There is no single update procedure for all firmware. A vendor may provide a device-specific updater, or a platform may deliver an update through a defined operating-system and firmware interface.
A documented Windows and UEFI route
On supported Windows systems, Microsoft documents a method in which an update package contains a firmware image and Windows passes its payload to platform firmware through UEFI UpdateCapsule. The documentation distinguishes system firmware from device firmware and cautions against using this UEFI mechanism to update removable peripheral devices: a peripheral might not be present when the system restarts. This describes that Windows/UEFI implementation, not a universal method. Microsoft: UEFI firmware update platform

Image checks and device compatibility
The UEFI Firmware Management Protocol includes services for identifying a device’s current firmware revision and programming it with an image. Under the protocol, image authentication may be required when the relevant image attribute calls for it, and the image must be supported for the target device. These checks are part of that protocol; they do not establish that every update mechanism works the same way. UEFI Firmware Management Protocol
Safe steps for a device owner
- Identify the exact make and model, including any hardware revision the manufacturer asks you to check.
- Use the manufacturer’s support page or update mechanism for that specific device.
- Read the release notes and installation directions so you know what the update addresses and what preparation it requires.
- Use only an image intended for that device, and follow any power, restart, or recovery instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
Microsoft says its CFU protocol is available in Windows 10 version 2004 and later. This is a version-specific statement about CFU, not a general requirement for firmware updates. Microsoft: Component Firmware Update protocol

What to remember
- Firmware is software associated with hardware, but it can often be changed through a controlled update.
- Platform firmware and component firmware have different scopes and may use different update methods.
- UEFI defines an interface for operating systems and platform firmware; it is not itself a computer’s firmware image.
- Use the exact device’s supported image and update instructions instead of assuming one procedure fits every device.
