Farming as a service (FaaS) is a model in which a farmer obtains machinery work, crop care, farm data, advice, or market links as paid services, instead of owning every asset or building every capability in-house. It is an umbrella term rather than a single product, so the exact bundle of services, and the payment terms, depend on the provider and the country.

What the term means

FaaS borrows the logic of software-as-a-service: the user pays for access to a capability for a task or a period, and the provider carries the asset and the know-how. In agriculture, the capability might be a tractor and operator, a spraying or harvesting job, a sensor network with analytics, or an advisory service. The model can wrap any combination of these.

The clearest official definition comes from Japan. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) uses FaaS in its 2022 white paper, which reports on agriculture in the 2021 fiscal year, to describe farming that uses digital technology for efficient production while reading consumer needs through data, so that farm products and foods are supplied in a form consumers value. The ministry’s Japanese wording is:

  • Don’t let the good times fool you - Life on the Farm enhances critical thinking and money/math skills. Not only that, but there is a unique FUN fact on the back of each cow card to offer you a glimpse into the world of farm life!
  • Created by an American Farm Family, gameplay includes authentic experiences and mishaps that occurred on a real Minnesotan family farm.
  • Designed for ages 8-108 and suitable for 2-6 players, Life on the Farm sparks multi-generational FUN that is perfect for family game night.

The English above is a working translation, not an official English text. Note that Japan’s definition leans toward data-driven management and consumer orientation, while other sources, such as the Indian MANAGE discussion paper of 2018, emphasize equipment rental and pay-per-use access. Both are FaaS in the broader sense, which is why any example should name its country and service.

What falls under FaaS

Five service families recur in the sources. A single provider may offer several of them.

Equipment and mechanization access

The farmer rents a machine or pays an operator to carry out a field task, so the farm does not need to buy and maintain every implement. MANAGE describes equipment rentals and crop-care practices as FaaS areas, with subscription and pay-per-use arrangements. This is the most traditional form of the model, since custom hiring of machinery predates the term.

Production support

Crop-care work, mechanized operations, and day-to-day operational help can be supplied as services, bundling labour and equipment access in one contract. The scope of what is included should be written into the agreement, because “crop care” can mean scouting, spraying, or full management.

Farm management and data

Sensors, drones, apps, and platforms collect or present field and crop information. Japan’s white paper describes the use of sensor and drone data and an agricultural data platform, WAGRI, that supports private ICT services. A field sensor is an enabling tool, such as a soil moisture sensor, and it is not the service itself. The service is the analysis, the platform, or the decision support built on the data.

Advice and market connection

Digital advisory services, and links between farmers, suppliers, and buyers, can form part of a broader service model. Because the scope depends on the provider, treat these as possible categories rather than standard features.

Urban and controlled-environment production

A 2023 article in the journal Smart Agricultural Technology describes initiatives that combine controlled-environment agriculture with digital technology to grow food in cities. This is one emerging application of FaaS, not the definition of it.

How payment works and what it changes

The core economic idea is access without full ownership. A farmer can use a machine, a service, or a capability for a task or for a subscription period. MANAGE describes this as converting fixed costs into variable costs. That changes the timing and structure of spending: a farm pays as it uses the service instead of committing capital up front.

It does not, by itself, lower total cost. Whether a service is cheaper depends on how much the farm uses it, what it would otherwise spend on ownership, maintenance, storage, transport, labour, and financing, and what the provider charges for the same period. The sources reviewed for this article do not compare provider prices or establish a typical saving, so no savings figure should be assumed.

How to compare a service with owning

Use these five checks before committing to a service contract:

  • Total cost for the expected use: compare the service fee with ownership, maintenance, transport, labour, and financing over the same period.
  • Availability at the needed time: seasonal peaks and the distance to equipment or operators can decide whether a service is practical.
  • Fit to crop and task: confirm that the provider supports your crop, field conditions, equipment, and operation.
  • Data and tool compatibility: for digital services, check whether existing machinery, sensors, and farm records can connect to the platform.
  • Training and connectivity needs: identify the training, internet access, and on-farm technical knowledge the service requires.

What the adoption figures show

The most detailed adoption figures in the sources come from Japan. They are dated, and they describe Japan only, so they are not current global estimates. The table below lists each figure with its source and scope.

Figure Source and year Scope
Fewer than 20% of agricultural management entities used data-driven farming MAFF, 2022 white paper, reporting the 2020 Census Japan, all agricultural management entities
More than 50% of entities whose principal operators were aged 15–39 used data-driven farming MAFF, 2022 white paper, reporting the 2020 Census Japan, younger principal operators
More than 50% of corporate farm entities used data; about one in ten analysed field-environment or crop-growth data with sensors or drones MAFF, 2022 Japan, corporate farm entities
More than 70 smart-farming solutions examined, covering crop management, livestock management, and mechanization access Digital Agri Hub, 2022, summarised by the European Commission’s Knowledge4Policy service Low- and middle-income countries
39 projects listed under three areas: field-facing projects, administrative work, and infrastructure linking field operations with government MAFF, 2022 Japan

The Digital Agri Hub review also identifies robust technical and digital-service know-how as an important rollout challenge, especially for smallholders in low- and middle-income countries. It does not quantify that effect for any country or crop.

Limits of the evidence

  • There is no single global standard. Sources emphasise different mixes of equipment, production help, digital management, market access, and controlled-environment farming. Confirm what a given provider means by the term.
  • Market-size forecasts, water-saving estimates, and yield-increase claims are not established here. Such figures often circulate in search snippets, but the methods and direct evidence behind them were not verified for this article, so they are left out.
  • Current prices and regional availability vary. The sources do not say what a service costs today, which provider is best, or how programmes work in every region.

In practice, FaaS is best understood as a way of buying a farm task, data stream, or capability on demand, and the value of that arrangement depends on the farm’s own volume, timing, and technical readiness.
