Ethernet over coax carries home network traffic over existing coaxial cable, typically by using compatible adapters or a gateway with built-in coax networking. It is a description of the result, not one universal protocol: modern home setups commonly use MoCA or G.hn. An ordinary Ethernet cable cannot plug directly into a coax outlet.
How Ethernet over coax works
A typical setup converts network traffic at both ends of a coax run. Near the router, an Ethernet cable connects the router or switch to a coax-network adapter. That adapter sends traffic over the coax using its supported technology. At the destination, a compatible endpoint converts the link back to Ethernet for a computer, TV, game console, access point, or switch.
Some gateways already include coax networking, which may remove the need for a separate adapter at the router end. Verizon’s Ethernet-over-coax adapter guide shows both an integrated-MoCA-gateway setup and one using an adapter between the router’s Ethernet port and a coax outlet. Its included leads, splitter, and power adapter are specific to that documented device; packages vary by model.
Which technologies can carry Ethernet over coax?
MoCA
MoCA, developed by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance, is a common technology for home networking over coax. The Alliance’s MoCA Home 2.5 overview lists 2.5 Gbps MAC throughput, latency below 5 ms, and a usable spectrum of 400–1675 MHz. These are Alliance-published specifications and claims, not a guarantee of application throughput or latency in a particular home. The Alliance also describes MoCA Home 2.5 as offering actual data rates up to 2.5 Gbps on its About MoCA page.
#1 Best Overall
- Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
- Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
- Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
- Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
- Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.
The Alliance says MoCA is designed to coexist with legacy TV, DOCSIS, and cellular technologies. “Designed to coexist” does not guarantee compatibility with every combination of equipment, service, splitter, or wiring layout. Check the adapter maker’s instructions and the requirements of any services using the same coax.
G.hn
G.hn is a separate standards family for networking over premises wiring, which can include coax. ITU-T Recommendation G.9960 specifies architecture and the physical layer for wireline home-network transceivers; it complements G.9961, which covers the data-link layer. The available sources do not establish that G.hn and MoCA devices interoperate, so treat them as distinct choices and confirm that both endpoints support the same technology.

- ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
- 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
- ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
- 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
- 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.
Older coax Ethernet
Ethernet has historical physical-layer versions that used coax directly. That is different from what consumer product listings usually mean today by “Ethernet over coax”: adapters bridge Ethernet network interfaces to a coax networking technology such as MoCA or G.hn.
What to check before choosing an adapter
- Technology at both ends: Confirm that the gateway or adapter and the remote endpoint support compatible coax networking. Do not assume MoCA and G.hn can communicate with each other.
- Router capability: Check whether your router or gateway already supports the technology. Depending on the equipment, you may need a separate adapter near the router, at the remote room, or both.
- Ethernet port speed: Compare the adapter’s Ethernet port capability with the speed you need. A coax-network rating does not by itself establish the speed available through an Ethernet port or the throughput an application will achieve.
- Coax layout and shared services: Verify that the outlets you intend to use are connected appropriately, and check any splitters, filters, satellite or cable service, and other equipment sharing the coax. Wiring differs between homes and buildings.
- Model documentation and certification: Check the exact device’s supported standard and version, wiring guidance, and compatibility instructions. The MoCA Alliance maintains a certified-products directory; directory status and product availability can change.
Ethernet over coax versus a direct Ethernet cable
Ethernet over coax is useful when coax is already installed along the route you need and running new Ethernet is inconvenient. It still requires compatible equipment at the coax endpoints, and the result depends on the devices and wiring in that installation. A direct Ethernet connection instead uses Ethernet cabling end to end. Which option fits depends on the available cable route, endpoint hardware, and the services already using the coax.

What the speed figures mean
The MoCA Alliance’s 2.5 Gbps figure is MAC throughput for MoCA Home 2.5, not a promise that an application will transfer data at 2.5 Gbps. The Alliance’s separate “up to 2.5 Gbps” wording likewise describes the technology, not a measured result for a particular home. Actual usable performance depends on the complete connection, including adapter ports, connected equipment, and coax installation. The cited Alliance latency figure is also an organizational claim, not an independent measurement of your setup.
