Ericsson Radio 6646 is a carrier-grade radio unit announced on September 2, 2022, that combines 700, 800 and 900 MHz bands across three sectors in one compact unit. Ericsson says it supports mobile standards from 2G to 5G. Its purpose is to consolidate low-band radio equipment at operator sites—not to serve as a consumer 5G device.

What triple-band and tri-sector mean

“Triple-band” means Radio 6646 combines three low-frequency bands: 700, 800 and 900 MHz. “Tri-sector” means the unit serves three sectors, or directional coverage areas, at a site. Together, those capabilities let an operator consolidate equipment that might otherwise require multiple radio units. Ericsson’s announcement describes support for network standards from 2G to 5G, so the radio is intended to support multi-generation network deployments rather than 5G alone. Ericsson’s September 2022 announcement is in Chinese; the product details here reflect its translated description.

What Ericsson says the radio can replace

Ericsson described one Radio 6646 as doing the job of nine radios at a single-band site. That is a specific consolidation comparison, not a universal nine-for-one replacement ratio: actual equipment needs depend on the bands and sectors configured at a site.

The company also claimed 40% lower energy use and 60% lower weight compared with triple-band single-sector radios. These are Ericsson’s launch figures, and the stated comparison is with that category of radio. The reviewed sources do not provide an independent field test or methodology for the percentages, so they should be read as vendor claims rather than independently verified results.

Why operators might use it

Low-band frequencies are useful for extending coverage, including indoors. Ericsson positioned the 6646 as a way to bring low-band coverage from rooftops and towers into locations such as offices, basements, shops and homes. It also said operators could use the radio alongside mid-band carrier aggregation to improve 5G coverage and performance. Those are the intended benefits Ericsson describes; the announcement does not provide independent measurements of coverage or performance gains.

Reducing the number of units at a site can also reduce equipment footprint and the work involved in deployment. Ericsson framed the product as a way to simplify site upgrades while lowering energy use and weight. Telefónica’s RAN Technology and Support Manager Vicente Abad described it as a compact, flexible way to expand 5G coverage cost-effectively; that is operator commentary, not a performance test.

How Radio 6646 differs from Radio 6626

Radio 6626 was Ericsson’s earlier tri-sector radio, announced in 2021. It combined two bands rather than three. The comparison below covers the launch information Ericsson published; it is not a like-for-like performance test.

What is known about availability

Ericsson’s current portfolio page continues to list Radio 6646 among its radio offerings, but that listing does not confirm ordering status, availability in a particular country or supported configurations for a specific operator. Operators should confirm current specifications and local deployment status with Ericsson. This is network infrastructure for service providers, not a consumer product. Ericsson’s RAN portfolio page provides broader portfolio context, not a current availability guarantee.
