Dolby Digital Plus is Dolby’s name for the E-AC-3 (Enhanced AC-3) audio codec. It compresses digital audio using a lossy format and is designed to deliver multichannel sound efficiently for streaming, broadcast, downloaded media, and home theater. The format can support up to 7.1 discrete channels, but a particular program and playback system determine what you actually hear.
What does Dolby Digital Plus mean?
Dolby Digital Plus is an audio codec: software and rules for encoding, compressing, and decoding digital sound. Its technical designation is E-AC-3, short for Enhanced AC-3. It was developed as an evolution of Dolby Digital, whose technical designation is AC-3.
The format is intended for situations where multichannel audio must be delivered efficiently, including streaming and on-demand services, broadcast, downloaded content, and Blu-ray. Dolby lists supported data rates from 32 kbps to 6 Mbps; that is a format capability range, not a claim about the bitrate of every program. Dolby identifies 384 kbps for discrete 7.1-channel surround in its product description. Dolby’s overview of Dolby Digital Plus provides those capability figures.

No. They are related formats, but the names refer to different codecs: Dolby Digital is AC-3, while Dolby Digital Plus is E-AC-3. Dolby’s technical overview explains that E-AC-3 has its own bitstream syntax, defined separately in Annex E of ETSI TS 102 366, and is not bitstream-backward-compatible with AC-3 decoders. Dolby’s technical overview describes the distinction.

In practice, an older system that cannot decode E-AC-3 may still receive a converted Dolby Digital signal when the source device and its settings support that conversion. Dolby describes this as a way for Dolby Digital-only systems to receive a traditional Dolby Digital signal, with 5.1-channel playback. That is not the same as the older receiver decoding the original E-AC-3 bitstream. Whether conversion works depends on the source, output settings, connection, and playback equipment. Dolby’s Dolby Digital Plus white paper discusses compatibility and conversion.
Is Dolby Digital Plus lossy or lossless?
Dolby Digital Plus is lossy: encoding reduces some audio information to make the stream more compact. Dolby TrueHD, by contrast, is a lossless format. Lossy versus lossless describes how the audio is compressed; it does not, by itself, establish how noticeable the difference will be in a particular room, program, or playback chain.

How many channels does Dolby Digital Plus support?
Dolby Digital Plus can support up to 7.1 discrete channels. That describes a capability, not a guarantee that every movie, show, stream, or device uses 7.1. The channel layout available to you depends on the encoded program and on the source and playback equipment. Dolby’s overview identifies 384 kbps for discrete 7.1-channel surround, but the figure should not be treated as the bitrate of all 7.1 content.
A Dolby technical paper gives additional maximum-rate examples that vary with sample rate and frame-block configuration. It lists 6,144 kbps for a 48 kHz, one-block-per-frame case; this is a codec limit in that technical example, not a typical streaming bitrate. Dolby’s technical paper and overview materials discuss rate and channel capabilities.

How does Dolby Digital Plus compare with Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD?
| Format | Technical name | Compression | Channel capability stated by Dolby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolby Digital Plus | E-AC-3 | Lossy | Up to 7.1 discrete channels |
| Dolby Digital | AC-3 | Lossy | Up to 5.1 channels |
| Dolby TrueHD | TrueHD | Lossless | Multichannel audio; the cited comparison does not specify a channel maximum |
These are format-level distinctions, not a universal sound-quality ranking. The result depends on the actual encode, available channels, system support, and listening conditions. Dolby’s comparison and format descriptions are available in its Dolby Digital Plus overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will Dolby Digital Plus work with your TV, streamer, or receiver?
Check the supported audio formats for both the device sending audio and the device playing it. A TV or streaming device may decode E-AC-3, pass it through, or convert it to another supported format; the exact options vary by model and configuration. A receiver that lists only Dolby Digital support should not be assumed to decode E-AC-3 itself.

- If an older Dolby Digital-only system is involved, verify that the source can output a converted Dolby Digital signal and that the connection and settings allow it.
Dolby’s compatibility guidance describes conversion to traditional Dolby Digital, but it does not establish that every combination of devices or connections will pass or convert the signal. For standards-level detail, Dolby’s transport-stream article, dated January 25, 2022, points to ETSI TS 102 366 and ATSC A/52B for AC-3 and E-AC-3 bitstream syntax; it cites ETSI TS 102 366 V1.3.1 (August 2014) and ATSC A/52B Revision B (December 17, 2012). Dolby’s transport-stream overview covers stream signaling and those references.
