Call of Duty’s original DMZ is an extraction mode: enter the map, choose whether to pursue missions or other objectives, collect gear and valuables, then reach an extraction point alive. Unlike battle royale, the goal is not simply to be the last squad standing. What you accomplish matters—but so does getting out with the loot.
Activision has also announced a separate DMZ for Modern Warfare 4, planned for October 23, 2026. Its announced setting and systems differ from the original Warzone 2.0 mode, so the two should not be treated as the same experience.
How did the original DMZ mode work?
The original DMZ launched as part of Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare II. Activision described it as an open-world, narrative-focused extraction mode. A match was a flexible run through the exclusion zone: you could work toward objectives, explore, fight AI combatants or other Operators, or steer clear of fights when possible.
The core decision was how much to risk before leaving. You could keep moving to complete goals and find more items, but every extra detour gave you more opportunities to lose the gear you had not yet secured by extracting.

What missions and activities could you take on?
Faction missions
Before deploying in the original mode, players could select faction missions. Activision’s launch-era guide named three factions: Legion, White Lotus, and Black Mous. These missions supplied objectives and helped advance the mode’s story.
Other ways to spend a run
Faction missions were not the only option. Contracts, world events, and points of interest offered other activities, and players could decide which opportunities to pursue. You could focus on a mission, explore the map, engage rival Operators, or avoid them and prioritize survival.

What happens to loot when you extract or die?
The original mode’s backpack could hold weapons, equipment, cash, and valuables. Items found in containers had to be selected and put into the pack. Successfully extracting preserved eligible items in storage between matches; dying put nonpermanent backpack contents at risk.

Getting out alive converted what you found into something you could keep for later.

What does exfil mean, and how did extraction work?
“Exfil” means leaving the exclusion zone alive through an extraction point. In the original DMZ, you called in a helicopter at a marked location. Calling it in could expose your position to rival squads and attract AI combatants, so reaching an extraction point did not make the exit automatically safe.
After the ordinary extraction points had been used, a final exfil appeared as the last route out. Missing it meant your Operator was listed as MIA. Squadmates could revive one another, but a revival did not remove the risk to nonpermanent items if the squad ultimately failed to extract.

How is the announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ different?
Activision announced a new DMZ for Modern Warfare 4 on June 6, 2026. It is set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and tied to the game’s campaign; the original mode was associated with Al Mazrah. The features below are publisher-announced plans, not a description of independently verified gameplay.

The announced mode also includes human rivals and escalating AI threats. Call of Duty Staff described it as “Call of Duty’s definitive extraction shooter,” but that is the publisher’s characterization of the new mode, not a neutral assessment or a description of the original mode’s exact mechanics.

Activision’s announcement planned Modern Warfare 4 for October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with preorders available through participating retailers. That launch date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026. The announcement does not establish that the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ is currently accessible or supported, so its launch-era mechanics alone should not be taken as confirmation that it can still be played.

No. Call of Duty: Mobile has a separately named mode, DMZ: Recon. Activision describes it as a three-player PvPvE extraction mode with contracts and extraction zones. It is distinct from the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ and the new DMZ announced for Modern Warfare 4.
