DMZ is Call of Duty’s extraction-shooter format: you enter a dangerous map, complete missions or other objectives, collect gear and resources, then try to leave alive. Anything valuable remains at risk until extraction. The name is used for several different games, however. The upcoming Modern Warfare 4 DMZ takes place in the Hajin exclusion zone and should not be confused with the older Warzone 2.0 DMZ or Call of Duty: Mobile’s DMZ: Recon.
This guide explains the announced Modern Warfare 4 mode first, then separates the rules and objectives of the two earlier experiences. Dates and mechanics for Modern Warfare 4 below are based on information available on October 13, 2026; its scheduled release date is October 23, 2026, with digital-preorder early access reported for October 20.
What DMZ means in Call of Duty
DMZ is built around a high-risk deployment loop rather than a conventional match with a fixed win screen. You choose an Operator and a goal, enter an active combat zone, search for equipment and materials, fight or avoid threats, and decide when the value of staying exceeds the risk of dying. A successful exfiltration carries what you recovered into your longer-term progression. A failed operation can cost the items you were carrying, although the new mode also includes ways to recover and continue progressing.
In the newly announced Modern Warfare 4 version, the setting is Hajin, an exclusion zone left unstable after the game’s campaign. Operators work as off-the-books assets seeking advanced military technology and weapons while hostile artificial-intelligence forces and rival human Operators pursue their own objectives. You can deploy alone or with a squad.

Call of Duty describes this version as a persistent extraction experience in a living combat environment. Its official overview calls DMZ “Call of Duty’s definitive extraction shooter,” emphasizing unpredictable encounters, weather, objectives, and progression that carries from one match to the next.
The important qualification is the name itself: “DMZ” does not identify one universal ruleset. The original Warzone 2.0 mode and Mobile’s DMZ: Recon use different maps, mission structures, squad rules, and consequences for death.
The three DMZ experiences, compared
| Experience | Where it appears | Squad information | Objectives | Extraction and death rules | Persistent progress |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 DMZ | Modern Warfare 4 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 | Solo or squad play; exact maximum squad size is not stated | Story Missions, match-generated Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, exploration, looting, crafting, and player encounters | Helicopters and skyhooks are announced exfil methods. Downed Operators may be rescued; lost Operators can be recovered through the FOB. Full launch-day interaction details are not yet stated. | FOB storage, crafting, Operator progression, XP, rewards, and Traits |
| Warzone 2.0 DMZ | Warzone 2.0 era, primarily the Al Mazrah map | Squad play; the cited guide does not state a universal squad-size figure | Selectable faction missions, Contracts, and side objectives | Players called a helicopter at marked exfil points. After those points were used, a final exfil location was revealed. Death removed non-permanent Backpack items, although squadmates could revive one another. | Faction and mission advancement under the original mode’s progression systems |
| DMZ: Recon | Call of Duty: Mobile | Squads of three | Drop in, fight human players and hostile forces, collect loot, and reach an Exfil | Several Exfils are available. Extracting before the match ends preserves earned progress and loot; dying first loses them. | Progress and loot retained when extraction succeeds |
These are comparisons of separate products, not interchangeable settings. Instructions for calling an exfil helicopter in the 2022 Warzone mode should not be treated as instructions for Modern Warfare 4.
How a Modern Warfare 4 DMZ deployment works
1. Choose whether to operate alone or with a squad
The announced mode supports solo deployments and squad play. A squad can divide attention between objectives, cover an extraction, and rescue a downed teammate. Solo play gives you control over every decision but removes the safety net of another Operator. The announcement does not establish a fixed maximum squad size, so do not assume a particular team limit until the game’s current interface or launch documentation specifies one.
2. Enter Hajin with a purpose
Every deployment can combine several activities. You might pursue a narrative Story Mission, accept a Dynamic Operation generated for that match, search for crafting resources, or simply explore points of interest for useful equipment. The map is not presented as a static shooting gallery: weather, hidden locations, high-threat areas, and enemy reactions can alter the risk of a route.

3. Balance loot against exposure
Useful gear, valuables, resources, and rare ingredients are incentives to stay in the zone. They are also liabilities while they remain unextracted. The longer you remain active, the more opportunities you have to complete objectives and find better materials, but the more time enemies and rival Operators have to locate you. DMZ’s central decision is therefore not “How do I clear the map?” but “What is enough value to justify leaving now?”
4. Choose how to handle other Operators
Human opponents are part of the risk, but fighting is not the only possible interaction. The official description allows for encounters that become combat, negotiation, or avoidance. Hunting another Operator can increase your notoriety and make you easier for other squads to track. A successful ambush may remove a threat and provide access to equipment, while an unnecessary fight can attract reinforcements and expose your extraction route.
5. Extract before the situation becomes untenable
Extraction is the point at which the current run’s valuables and resources become secure. Modern Warfare 4’s announcement confirms multiple exfil methods, including helicopters and skyhooks. It does not yet publish a complete launch-day sequence covering call-in times, exact locations, timers, or every interaction at an exfil point. Those details may depend on the map and post-launch updates, so older DMZ tutorials should not be copied into this mode without confirmation.
Modern Warfare 4 objectives and activities
Story Missions
Story Missions provide narrative objectives at specific points of interest. They are designed for a solo Operator or a squad and are intended to extend the wider Modern Warfare 4 story over time. A Story Mission is the clearest choice when you want a directed goal rather than an improvised loot run.
Dynamic Operations
Dynamic Operations are multi-step objectives generated for an individual match. Announced examples include neutralizing abandoned weapons programs, securing critical assets, rescuing people, and attacking hostile forces. Because the operation is assembled for the deployment, the sequence and pressure can change from one run to the next.

Side Ops and free exploration
Smaller activities reward players who investigate instead of following a single mission marker. Examples include locating lost supply drops, repairing useful trucks, and climbing damaged radio towers. Exploration can also reveal hidden locations and high-threat areas, but the mode’s official overview does not promise that every discovery is safe or profitable.

Looting, resources, and crafting
Searching the zone produces equipment, support items, resources, and rare ingredients. Extracted materials feed the Forward Operating Base’s upgradeable 3D Printer, which can turn resources into equipment and other support items for later deployments. This makes scavenging relevant even when a particular run is not centered on a combat mission.
PvP, bounties, and emergent encounters
Rival Operators can be hunted, including through bounty-style activity, but the pursuit carries a visibility cost. The more aggressively you engage other players, the more likely you are to become a target yourself. Encounters can also arise without a formal bounty when two squads want the same asset or extraction route.
Why the environment is dangerous
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ combines PvE and PvP: AI forces defend locations and respond to activity, while human Operators make independent decisions. The announced threat system can produce stronger enemy responses and reinforcements as players create more disruption. A loud attack may therefore change the rest of the deployment by increasing pressure at the original objective or along the route out.
Weather can change visibility and affect how safely you move between locations. High-threat areas may offer better rewards but require more resources and a clearer escape plan. These systems make information and timing as important as weapon strength: knowing when to bypass a fight can preserve both your equipment and your extraction window.

What happens when an Operator is downed or lost
Rescue during the deployment
If an Operator is downed, squadmates can choose to rescue that player or leave them. The decision depends on the squad’s position, remaining supplies, nearby threats, and the value of the current objective. A rescue attempt can save a teammate but expose the rest of the squad to enemies or rival Operators.
The Tourniquet survival state
The overview also describes a Tourniquet mechanic for a wounded state when a player lacks a self-revive. This is distinct from a normal self-revive item and is part of the new mode’s survival systems. The announcement does not publish every timing or input detail, so exact use should be checked in the live game.
Recovery through the FOB
Operators lost in action can be recovered through the FOB. The recovery costs in-game cash and sends a rescue team. This system means a failed run creates a setback rather than necessarily ending an Operator’s long-term availability, but the cost makes repeated reckless losses expensive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How progression carries between deployments
The Forward Operating Base is the connective tissue between runs. Recovered items and resources can feed storage, crafting, and Operator progression. The FOB’s 3D Printer becomes more useful as it is upgraded, allowing extracted resources to become equipment and support items for later deployments.

A bad operation can still produce progress. The announced systems allow players to earn XP, unlock rewards and Traits, and advance long-term progression even when the operation ends unsuccessfully. That does not remove the extraction risk: the specific valuables and gear carried during the failed run remain exposed, while broader progression can continue.

How the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ differed
The original DMZ placed Operators in Al Mazrah and centered on selectable faction missions, Contracts, and side objectives. Its extraction procedure was more explicitly defined in the 2022 Xbox Wire guide: a player called a helicopter at a marked exfil point, and after the marked locations had been used, a final exfil point was revealed.
Death in that version removed all non-permanent items in the Backpack. Squadmates could revive one another, but a revive did not turn a failed run into a successful extraction; it simply gave the team a chance to continue. Those rules belong to the Warzone 2.0-era mode. They should not be used to infer the exact extraction sequence, inventory behavior, or final-exfil design of Modern Warfare 4.
How DMZ: Recon on Mobile differs
DMZ: Recon is a separate extraction-based mode in Call of Duty: Mobile. Activision Support describes it as a three-person squad experience with PvPvE combat against human players and hostile forces. Players drop in, collect loot, and leave through one of several Exfils.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Its most important rule is straightforward: extraction before the match ends preserves earned progress and loot, while dying before extraction loses them. Although that risk resembles the broader DMZ idea, Mobile’s squad size, map, controls, and progression should not be assumed to match either Warzone 2.0 DMZ or Modern Warfare 4 DMZ.
When and where to play the new DMZ
As of October 13, 2026, Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to release on October 23, 2026. Xbox Wire reports that digital preorders and purchases provide DMZ early access from October 20. These are scheduled dates, not proof that the mode has already launched, and release plans or access conditions can change.
The official platform list is PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The mode is part of Modern Warfare 4, so a player looking for this version should identify the game and platform rather than searching for an undifferentiated “DMZ” listing.
A practical decision framework for each run
- Set one primary objective. Pick a Story Mission, a Dynamic Operation, a Side Op, or a resource target before you enter.
- Define a stopping point. Decide what combination of loot, mission progress, or materials is valuable enough to justify extraction.
- Track escalation. Stronger AI responses, reinforcements, weather, and rival activity are signals that the original route may no longer be safe.
- Choose fights deliberately. Avoiding an Operator can preserve your position; attacking can provide an advantage but may raise notoriety and draw attention.
- Protect the exit plan. Keep enough supplies and time to reach a helicopter, skyhook, or another available exfil method rather than treating extraction as an afterthought.
- Use the FOB after the run. Store recovered materials, apply available crafting or upgrades, and account for the cash cost of recovering a lost Operator before the next deployment.
What is still not specified
The public Modern Warfare 4 overview establishes the mode’s setting, objective categories, threat systems, extraction types, and progression framework, but it does not provide every launch-day number or interaction. Exact exfil timers, helicopter-call steps, skyhook locations, maximum squad size, inventory limits, and the full cost structure for recovery are not stated in the announced material. Treat detailed guides published before launch as provisional unless they identify current in-game evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
DMZ is an extraction shooter label, not one single Call of Duty ruleset. In the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 version, deploy into Hajin, pursue missions or dynamic objectives, manage AI and rival-Operator threats, and extract by helicopter, skyhook, or another confirmed route to secure your haul. Warzone 2.0 DMZ and Mobile’s DMZ: Recon share the extraction concept but use different objectives and death rules.
