Data analytics is the organized process of examining and interpreting data to produce knowledge that can inform a decision or action. It includes more than running calculations: a typical analytics lifecycle spans data collection, preparation, analysis, visualization, and access to the resulting knowledge.
What data analytics means
NIST describes data analytics as a set of processes guided by an organization’s need to turn raw data into actionable knowledge. Its lifecycle includes data collection, preparation, analytics, visualization, and access. In practice, the point is not simply to produce a chart or model; it is to make evidence useful to someone making a decision.
Analytics is one part of the broader data-science lifecycle. That wider work can also involve governance, security, metadata, operations, and retention. Which activities matter depends on the data, the decision, and the organization’s obligations.
What are the four types of data analytics?
A common business framework, presented by IBM, groups analytics by the question being asked. These categories are useful lenses, not a universal or exclusive taxonomy; a project can use more than one.

| Type | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Descriptive | What happened? | Summarize past sales or service performance. |
| Diagnostic | Why might it have happened? | Investigate a change in sales by comparing relevant periods or segments. |
| Predictive | What may happen? | Forecast demand or estimate risk from available data. |
| Prescriptive | What action is recommended? | Compare possible actions and identify one suited to the stated objective. |
These labels describe the purpose of an analysis, not a guarantee of certainty. A forecast estimates what may happen; it does not prove why an outcome occurred. Likewise, a recommended action depends on the assumptions, constraints, and objectives used to produce it.
IBM’s overview of analytics types offers this business-oriented question sequence. Other method classifications emphasize how analysts examine data or make inferences instead.

Methods analysts use
Exploratory data analysis
Exploratory data analysis (EDA) uses visual and quantitative inspection to understand a dataset, spot unusual values or patterns, and generate hypotheses or candidate models. NIST/SEMATECH notes that most EDA techniques are graphical, with some quantitative techniques; examples include plots of raw data and simple statistics. EDA is useful for learning what the data may contain, but a pattern discovered during exploration is not by itself proof of a cause. See the NIST/SEMATECH EDA handbook.
Classical, model-based analysis
Model-based analysis specifies a model and examines its parameters. Regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are examples. The analyst must choose a model appropriate to the question and assess whether its assumptions fit the data; a calculation cannot compensate for a poorly framed question or unsuitable evidence.

Bayesian analysis
Bayesian analysis combines prior distributions with observed data to make inferences or test assumptions. The prior makes explicit what was believed before considering the observations, while the data update that belief under the chosen model. The approach answers a different inferential framing from simply exploring a chart or fitting a model without that prior structure.
These approaches can complement one another. Analysts may begin with EDA to inspect data and identify useful questions, then use model-based or Bayesian methods for a more focused inference.

A practical data analytics workflow
The following sequence is a flexible way to organize a project, not a claim that every analytics effort follows one mandatory standard. NIST lifecycle frameworks include planning, acquiring or generating data, preparing it, analyzing it, communicating or sharing results, and managing the data over time.
- Frame the decision. State the question, who will use the answer, what outcome matters, and what constraints apply. Define what a useful result would look like before choosing a metric or model.
- Plan and acquire data. Identify the data sources, access requirements, formats, and limits on data use. NIST’s research-data lifecycle explicitly includes planning and generating or acquiring data; see NIST’s data lifecycle overview.
- Prepare and check the data. Clean and organize the data, then check whether it is complete, valid, and suitable for the question. NIST describes preparation as turning raw data into cleaned, organized information. Record important limitations rather than treating every available field as reliable evidence.
- Explore and analyze. Use visual and statistical methods that fit the question and their assumptions. Exploration can reveal patterns and anomalies; an inferential model can then address a more specific question.
- Communicate the findings. Present results in a form the decision-maker can understand. Visualization is an explicit step in NIST’s analytics lifecycle, but a chart should clarify the evidence rather than obscure uncertainty or limitations.
- Inform action and manage the data. Put findings to use where appropriate. Depending on context, governance, security, sharing, preservation, and safe disposal also belong in the data lifecycle.
Common use cases
Use cases are easiest to distinguish by the decision question they address. The examples below illustrate the four business-oriented categories; they are not a ranking of how frequently analytics is used across industries.

How to choose an analytics approach
Start with the decision, then assess whether the evidence and method can support the answer the reader needs. These comparison axes help keep the work grounded:
- Decision question: Are you describing, explaining, forecasting, or recommending?
- Evidence and uncertainty: Is the result an exploratory signal, a model-based inference, or evidence intended to support a causal claim? Choose methods and language that match the strength of the evidence.
- Data readiness: Are the format, completeness, validity, and quality adequate for the question?
- Timing: Does the decision need batch, near-real-time, or real-time results? NIST notes that latency requirements can influence architecture and tool choices.
- Actionability: Can the intended user understand the result, and can it lead to a decision?
What data analytics can—and cannot—show
An observed relationship between two variables does not automatically establish that one caused the other. NIST distinguishes correlation from causal explanation. A model may identify an association or make a prediction while leaving the reason for the outcome unresolved. Claims about cause require evidence and a design suited to answering a causal question.
Keep conclusions proportional to the method: describe a pattern as a pattern, a forecast as an estimate, and an inference in light of its assumptions. This distinction helps prevent a useful analytic result from being presented as stronger evidence than it is.
What does a data analyst do?
A data analyst helps turn a decision question into usable evidence. Depending on the project, that can mean identifying and preparing data, checking its quality, exploring it, applying appropriate statistical or analytical methods, and communicating findings to the people who need to act on them. The specific duties vary with the organization and the decision; analytics is a lifecycle, not just the moment when a model is run.
