DarkSword is an iOS exploit chain that researchers say can compromise vulnerable iPhones and iPads through malicious websites. It is not one spyware app, and a device running a version the chain supports is not necessarily infected. The practical response is to install the latest iOS or iPadOS update available for your model; if you cannot update, Apple’s Lockdown Mode is a security fallback.
What “DarkSword” means
Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) published its findings on March 18, 2026. It named the exploit chain DarkSword based on toolmarks in recovered payloads. GTIG describes a full-chain attack that uses multiple vulnerabilities to compromise a device running supported software and deliver a final-stage payload. The name “P7” is not explained in the reviewed reporting, so DarkSword is the substantiated technical name.
GTIG says the chain supports iOS 18.4 through 18.7 and uses six vulnerabilities. It identified three distinct payload families: GHOSTBLADE, GHOSTKNIFE, and GHOSTSABER. The exploit chain is the route into a device; the payload is what runs afterward. Their capabilities differ, so DarkSword should not be treated as one uniform spyware app or as proof that every kind of data was taken from every compromised device. Read GTIG’s technical account.
How the documented attacks worked
The documented campaigns used watering-hole websites: a person visits a malicious or compromised site, and the site attempts to exploit the browser and operating system. Lookout describes vulnerabilities involving Safari and WebKit, and a “hit-and-run” approach intended to collect information quickly and minimize time on the device. Avoiding suspicious links is sensible, but it does not replace installing a security update.

GTIG reports activity dating back to at least November 2025 in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Malaysia, and Ukraine. Its examples include a Snapchat-themed site used against Saudi users, activity it associated with commercial surveillance vendor PARS Defense in Turkey and Malaysia, and Ukraine watering-hole campaigns it associated with suspected espionage group UNC6353. These are researcher attributions and assessments, not proof that every campaign was government-directed or that users in those countries generally were targets.
What information could be exposed
Lookout’s analysis describes payload capabilities that could reach identity, communications, personal and corporate files, credentials, and device intelligence. Its reported examples include:

- Communications and account information: SMS and iMessage, WhatsApp and Telegram, email, and saved credentials.
- Personal or work data: iCloud files, notes, photos, and cryptocurrency wallets.
- Device and activity information: Wi-Fi credentials, location history, and call logs.
In its March 18, 2026 announcement about the Ukraine campaign, iVerify also listed Wi-Fi passwords, messages, call and location history, browser history, SIM and cellular information, health and calendar data, notes, and searches for crypto-wallet information. These are capabilities reported for observed payloads; they are not a guaranteed inventory of data taken from every device. Lookout’s analysis and iVerify’s announcement provide additional detail.
Does the “270 million devices” figure mean 270 million infections?
No. iVerify said versions iOS 18.4 through 18.6.2 were still running on “up to 270 million devices” in its March 18, 2026 announcement. That is an estimate of devices running those versions, not a count of confirmed DarkSword infections. The available reporting does not establish the total number of confirmed victims. A version supported by the exploit is not, by itself, evidence of compromise.

How to protect an iPhone or iPad
Install the latest update available for your model
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install the latest version Apple offers for your device. Keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi if needed, and restart if prompted.
- After installation, return to Software Update and confirm that the update completed.
GTIG says the vulnerabilities in its account were patched by iOS 26.3, with most fixed earlier. Apple released iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 on March 24, 2026, and added availability for more devices on April 1. Apple says automatic updates could deliver protections against web attacks it calls DarkSword. Eligibility depends on the model and its supported software; check Software Update rather than assuming a device qualifies. Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 security page lists compatible devices and security content.
If your device cannot update
GTIG recommends enabling Lockdown Mode for enhanced security when an update is not possible. It is a risk-reduction fallback, not a replacement for an available patch. Apple’s instructions are at Use Lockdown Mode on your iPhone or iPad.

If you have a concrete reason to suspect compromise
Contact Apple Support or a qualified mobile-device incident-response professional for current guidance. The cited reporting does not provide a reliable consumer self-diagnosis procedure, so a visual check or scan should not be treated as proof that a device is clean. Do not replace a phone solely because its software falls within the supported version range: check whether Apple offers an update for that model.

Why the reporting names may differ
Apple’s security page uses its own disclosure language and says: “For our customers’ protection, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.” GTIG’s DarkSword designation and the separate payload names come from researchers’ analysis of recovered material. Those naming differences do not change the practical step: install the latest update offered for your device.
