Cloud in a Bottle is an open-source personal-cloud platform from Imbue that aims to make deploying web apps on a server you control feel more integrated than managing a collection of separate services. It combines a router and control plane with containerized apps, while adding project-described features such as shared sign-in and permissioned app-to-app access. It is in active development, so treat those capabilities as design goals and documented behavior—not as independent proof of security, performance, or reliability.

What is Cloud in a Bottle?

Cloud in a Bottle is intended to help people deploy and share web apps on infrastructure they control. Rather than providing just a place to run containers, it presents a platform layer for installing apps, routing requests, handling owner authentication, and connecting apps through permissions.

Zack Polizzi, author of the project’s September 5, 2026 launch post, described the goal this way: “Self-hosting should feel like using a smartphone that serves webapps, not a sysadmin side job.” That is the project’s ambition, not a demonstrated outcome for every app or installation. How does Cloud in a Bottle work?

Apps are built from repositories

The project’s documented deployment flow starts with an app’s Git repository and a cloudinabottle.toml manifest. The manifest describes the app and its access to storage; when the repository includes a Dockerfile, the platform builds it with rootless Podman. The Python router acts as the instance’s control plane, managing app lifecycle, updates, and logs. See the GitHub README for implementation details.

The router handles incoming app traffic

According to the README, an app’s main HTTP port is bound to host loopback by default. The router proxies HTTP and WebSocket traffic according to the app’s subdomain. Owner authentication is the default for app routes; a manifest can mark particular paths as public. In the standard public deployment, Caddy provides HTTPS and CoreDNS handles wildcard DNS. These are documented defaults and design choices; actual behavior depends on how an instance is configured.

Storage is divided by purpose

The project describes three storage tiers: permanent app data, temporary files, and archive storage. A manifest controls which tiers an app container can access. Instance state and permanent app data reside on the instance; archive storage can be local or configured for S3-compatible storage. This describes the platform’s model, not a guarantee that a specific installation has been backed up or can be recovered.

Integration is the intended distinction

Cloud in a Bottle’s stated differentiator is the layer above individual containers. The project describes owner sign-in flowing through to apps and opt-in, permissioned access to data and capabilities between apps, exposed as APIs. Whether a particular app supports these integrations—and how useful they are in practice—depends on the app and its configuration. The project’s overview is at Cloud in a Bottle.

Where can you run it?

Deployment option What the project describes Main consideration
Hardware you own A spare desktop, old laptop, or Raspberry Pi; the project says it can run directly on a machine or in a virtual machine. You manage the hardware and network setup. The project notes that networking can be tricky, and its pages do not specify minimum hardware requirements or a Raspberry Pi generation.
Server you choose A cloud server selected and paid for by you. The project says a static IP may simplify networking, but you remain responsible for selecting and operating the hosting service.
Imbue-managed instance A paid managed option described as including a static IP and domain. The homepage displayed a starting price of $5 per month and a $10 starter credit when accessed on October 7, 2026. These are time-sensitive terms; verify current pricing and conditions on the official site.

The broad hardware examples are not compatibility recommendations. The project’s official pages do not establish minimum CPU, memory, or storage requirements, so check current installation guidance and the needs of the apps you plan to run before choosing a device.

What apps can you self-host with it?

The official catalog listed 38 apps when accessed on October 7, 2026; the count and available apps can change. Examples included:

  • Files and calendars: Nextcloud
  • Personal media: Jellyfin
  • Git hosting: Forgejo
  • Password management: VaultWarden
  • Messaging: Matrix Synapse
  • AI interface: Open WebUI
  • Network filtering: Pi-hole
  • Monitoring: Uptime Kuma
  • Backups: a Backup app supporting Restic providers

For apps outside the catalog, the project says a user can package an app from a Git repository using a cloudinabottle.toml manifest and, when needed, a Dockerfile, then deploy it through the dashboard or CLI. A catalog listing or packaging route does not by itself establish that an app is actively maintained or well suited to every use case. Browse the official app catalog.

How does it compare with other self-hosted approaches?

The useful comparison is about what work the platform takes on and what remains yours—not an unsupported claim that one tool is universally better. Cloud in a Bottle documents repository-based app builds, routing, owner authentication, and container lifecycle management. Its project-described shared sign-in and permissioned cross-app services aim to integrate apps more closely than a basic container host. Those features are opt-in according to the project.

You still need to consider network access, backups, updates, and app compatibility, and to decide whether you want to operate your own hardware, choose a server provider, or pay for managed provisioning. Cloud in a Bottle’s launch author discusses Sandstorm, Nextcloud, YunoHost, and Coolify from the project’s perspective; that post is not an independent feature comparison or benchmark. Readers weighing Cloud in a Bottle against Coolify, in particular, should compare the specific deployment and integration features they need rather than infer a performance winner.

What should you evaluate before relying on it?

Networking and reachability

Running an instance on your own network may involve configuring access to it from outside that network. The project specifically warns that network configuration can be tricky for owned hardware. A chosen cloud server or managed instance may simplify some networking tasks, but the exact setup depends on the deployment.

Backups and recovery

The platform documents archive storage that may use S3-compatible storage, and the catalog includes a Backup app supporting Restic providers. The available material does not specify a recovery-time or recovery-point guarantee, nor does the existence of a backup app prove that your data is being backed up. Confirm what is included, configure and monitor backups, and test restoring the data you consider important.

Updates and app maturity

The router manages app updates, but you are still choosing which apps to run and should understand how updates affect them and their data. The project calls itself actively developed. Polizzi said the team had built and tested it privately for more than six months before launch and cautioned that early users might need technical familiarity or help adapting apps. That is the author’s account of development, not independent validation.

Security and reliability evidence

The project describes routing and authentication defaults, app isolation, and permissioned integrations. Those design descriptions are not a security audit. The official materials covered here do not establish an independent audit, uptime figure, recovery guarantee, or comparative performance benchmark. Assess the consequences of exposing each service and the operational work you can take on before moving essential accounts or data.

Licensing and telemetry claims

The GitHub repository states that Cloud in a Bottle is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and says the license could change in the future, while personal use is intended to remain unrestricted. Check the repository’s current license and terms if the distinction matters to your deployment. The launch post describes the project as self-hostable and zero telemetry; those are claims made by the project, not independently verified findings.
