Automatic content recognition (ACR) identifies media by analyzing samples of audio or video, turning them into a fingerprint, and matching that fingerprint against known content. Some systems instead—or as well—detect a watermark embedded in the signal. On a smart TV, ACR may support features, viewing measurement, or advertising; in broadcast standards, it can help a receiver retrieve related content. The term covers different systems, so its data practices and purpose depend on the product and use case.
How automatic content recognition works
With fingerprinting, a device processes portions of the media it receives and derives a compact signature. The signature is compared with a reference database or service; a match can identify a program, advertisement, or other content. A 2024 peer-reviewed study describes the method as “Shazam-like” and audited communications between smart-TV ACR clients and servers. The study by Anselmi and colleagues examines the devices and conditions in its test, rather than every television or ACR implementation.
Watermarking works differently: identifying information is embedded in the audio or video before it reaches the receiver, which detects that information. Fingerprinting derives identifying features from received media; watermark detection reads information already carried in it. Some systems may use either method, and their sampling cadence, matching location, data sent, and retention practices vary.
Where ACR is used
Smart TVs
Some smart-TV platforms use ACR to recognize viewed content. Depending on the service, viewing information may support features such as recommendations, audience analysis, measurement, or advertising. ACR may recognize content from sources beyond a TV’s built-in apps: a 2018 Consumer Reports presentation at the Federal Trade Commission described recognition of media such as DVDs and Blu-ray discs. The FTC PrivacyCon transcript records the presentation’s explanation of this capability.

Manufacturer descriptions illustrate why ACR should not be treated as one uniform product. Samsung says its optional ACR generates unique signatures and that associated information may include viewing history, TV identifiers, and an IP address; it directs users to settings to change preferences. LG says its ACR uses audio fingerprinting from the TV’s internal audio processor, rather than screenshots or screen recordings. LG describes ACR as optional and off by default, and says interest-based and cross-device advertising require separate applicable consent. These are the manufacturers’ descriptions; policies and behavior can vary by model, market, agreement, and user choice.
Broadcast content recovery
ACR also has a standards-based use that is distinct from smart-TV advertising. ATSC A/336 describes a receiver that gets uncompressed audio and video through HDMI from a set-top box but lacks some broadcast signaling or alternate choices. The receiver can identify the content using an ATSC 3.0 watermark or fingerprint, then use broadband to retrieve associated content. ATSC’s A/336 page identifies the standard’s content-recovery scenario. Its current-version marker is A/336:2026-04, approved April 14, 2026, and the page says it is referenced by A/300:2026-04. This standard defines a broadcast application; it does not establish that all ACR is used for advertising or tracking.

What ACR can mean for privacy
ACR can make viewing activity observable to a TV platform or an associated service. To understand the implications for a particular TV, check what it samples, how often recognition runs, what identifiers are associated with a match, where the resulting information goes, how long it is retained, and whether it is used or shared for measurement or advertising. Manufacturer disclosures and settings are the most relevant starting points, but they are specific to a product and market.

At FTC PrivacyCon in 2018, Consumer Reports policy counsel described a five-model assessment in which tested smart TVs used ACR and other methods to recognize viewed content. The presentation also discussed possible targeted advertising on other devices on a home network. It reported that 43% of respondents to a Consumer Reports reader poll did not know their smart TVs were transmitting data to manufacturers and business partners. That figure is a result from the poll described at the event, not a representative estimate of all TV owners. The transcript also records the presenter’s description of ACR as taking “little snippets” of content to assess what someone is watching; the passage does not name the speaker.

A 2024 audit of Samsung and LG platforms reported that opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers in the study’s tested setup. The researchers also found differences between UK and US behavior. Those results apply to the devices and methods tested, not every model, firmware version, market, or type of TV data collection. Turning off ACR should not be assumed to disable other services or data collection.

- Identify the model and market. Check the TV’s model information and region; both can affect available settings and applicable agreements.
- Open the TV’s privacy or viewing-data settings. Look for ACR, viewing information, content recognition, or similarly named preferences. Samsung says its ACR preferences can be changed in TV settings; LG says users can turn off ACR in settings and withdraw from applicable agreements.
- Review related permissions separately. ACR, personalized advertising, cross-device advertising, and other connected-TV services may have distinct controls or consent choices.
- Confirm the setting after saving. Check the preference again in the menu and consult the manufacturer’s current support or privacy information if the option is missing or its effect is unclear.
For a practical comparison of ACR implementations, check the recognition method, content sources covered, purpose, data handling, user controls, geography, and software version. A label such as “ACR” alone does not tell you what a particular television collects or how it uses the information.
