AppSumo is a marketplace for software and other products made by third-party partners. Its best-known offers are lifetime deals, but “lifetime” means the life of the product—not your lifetime. Before buying, check the specific deal’s features, usage limits, refund terms, vendor risk, and any eligibility for shutdown credits.
What is AppSumo?
AppSumo is a marketplace that lists products from third-party partners, primarily digital software and membership services. AppSumo facilitates the offer, but it does not endorse or guarantee partner products, according to its Terms of Use. That distinction matters: a marketplace’s policies can explain purchase terms, but they do not establish that every listed tool is reliable or right for your needs.

A useful AppSumo review therefore has two parts: assess the marketplace’s purchase and protection terms, then evaluate the individual product and vendor on their own merits. The official materials describe those terms, but do not provide an independent, representative customer-satisfaction study or independently validate partner-product reliability.

AppSumo’s Help Center anticipates the question: “Will I still have this product when I’m 95?” The answer is no promise of access for your lifetime. AppSumo says that after you purchase and redeem a lifetime deal, you have access “for the lifetime of the product.” Its Terms of Use likewise clarify that lifetime access is for the product’s life, “so not necessarily until you die.”

In practical terms, the deal is tied to a product that a third-party vendor operates. If that product is discontinued, a lifetime deal does not by itself ensure the service will continue. Check the listing for the exact features, tier limits, and any stated protection if the product closes.
Three tips before buying an AppSumo deal
1. Read the terms on the actual deal page
Do not assume every purchase has the same refund window. AppSumo says lifetime deals typically have a 60-day refund period, but the period varies by deal and category, and some digital downloads cannot be refunded. The deal page’s terms control; check them before purchasing and note the deadline.

2. Redeem and test the product promptly
AppSumo recommends activating and testing a deal before its refund period ends. Try the features you actually plan to use, rather than just confirming that you can log in. Check that the product meets your needs while the stated refund option is still available.

3. Check usage limits and continuity protections
For an AI deal, find out what uses credits, how many credits are included, whether and when they refresh, and whether you need to supply a paid API key. Then inspect whether the specific listing qualifies for AppSumo’s We Got Your Back shutdown-credit policy, including the coverage period and credit amount. That policy is conditional; it is separate from an ordinary refund.

How refunds differ from shutdown credits
A refund returns a qualifying purchase under the deal’s stated refund terms and within its window. We Got Your Back addresses certain product closures during a specified coverage period and provides AppSumo credits, not an ordinary cash refund. Eligibility, coverage length, and credit amount depend on the purchase and membership status; verify the exact deal page and current policy.

Is AppSumo Plus worth it?
AppSumo’s current FAQ lists these Plus membership perks: 10% off purchases, expedited support, access to exclusive products, and community access. Annual members also receive a $25 coupon every 90 days; Plus Monthly does not include that quarterly coupon. Plus Pro Annual is described as providing twice the We Got Your Back coverage, up to 24 months for purchases made with an active Plus Pro membership.
Whether Plus makes sense depends on how often you expect to buy and which benefits you will use. Compare the membership’s current cost with expected eligible discounts and coupons, and consider whether its support and coverage benefits matter for the deals you are considering. Discounts and coverage are not retroactive: earlier purchases do not gain them after you join. After rewards have been used, the membership is non-refundable. Canceling prevents the next renewal but does not refund the current subscription.

What AppSumo’s reported survival figures do—and don’t—show
AppSumo’s 2024 Help Center page reports that an estimated 92% of SaaS companies fail in their first three years and says that only around 5% of thousands of software tools launched on AppSumo have gone under. The page does not provide an independent dataset or methodology for the first estimate, nor a denominator, cutoff date, or independent validation for the second figure. These are AppSumo’s own reported figures; they should not be treated as an independently verified forecast or a guarantee about any particular product.
A practical way to judge an individual deal
Before you buy, compare the listing against your needs—not just the apparent discount or the word “lifetime.”
- Features and limits: Identify what is included in the purchased tier and any caps on users, projects, storage, or other usage.
- Refund terms: Confirm the exact window, exclusions, and deadline on that deal’s page.
- AI operating costs: Check credit consumption and refresh rules, plus whether an API key or separate service cost is required.
- Vendor fit: Decide whether the product solves a real need and whether you are comfortable relying on a third-party vendor for continued access.
- Closure protection: Confirm the deal’s eligibility for shutdown credits and the applicable duration and percentage.
AppSumo can be a useful place to discover discounted software, but the marketplace label is not a substitute for evaluating the product. Treat the listing terms, refund deadline, and vendor’s continuity risk as part of the purchase decision.
