Apple’s smart speaker is HomePod: a speaker that plays audio, responds to Siri voice commands, and can support smart-home control. Apple’s product family includes HomePod and HomePod mini. Some tasks—such as initial setup, settings, and media controls—also require or can be completed on an iPhone or iPad.
What does Apple mean by a smart speaker?
HomePod combines a speaker with Siri and connected features. Apple describes it as “a smart speaker that is primarily voice controlled,” while noting that certain features may be completed using an iPhone or iPad, including setup, settings, and media controls. The description appears in Apple’s accessibility documentation.
In practical terms, HomePod is both an audio device and a voice interface. You can ask Siri to play supported audio, and use supported HomePod configurations to interact with compatible smart-home accessories. The exact capabilities depend on the model, software, services, region, and accessories involved.

Support smart-home control
Apple says HomePod mini can act as a home hub for remotely controlling compatible HomeKit- and Matter-enabled accessories. Its examples include thermostats, lights, and blinds. This does not mean every accessory works with every HomePod setup: check compatibility for the specific accessory and configuration. Apple outlines these capabilities on its HomePod mini features page.

What do you need to use HomePod?
Apple’s model specifications list Wi-Fi internet access and a compatible iPhone or iPad with the required operating system among the requirements. The exact device and software requirements differ between HomePod and HomePod mini, so check the specification page for the model you plan to use. Music services, radio, and some features may also depend on regional availability and software.
- Wi-Fi internet access.
- A compatible iPhone or iPad running the required software for that model.
- For smart-home control, accessories compatible with the relevant HomePod setup and supported smart-home standards.
Is HomePod just a speaker?
No. It plays audio, but it is also a Siri-enabled voice-controlled device and, in supported configurations, part of a smart-home setup. That combination is what makes HomePod Apple’s smart speaker. HomePod and HomePod mini provide different hardware and dimensions, so the name alone does not imply identical specifications or requirements.
