Apple’s 8-pin connector is commonly known as the Lightning connector. It is Apple’s proprietary physical connection for compatible devices and accessories; “8-pin” describes its contact arrangement, not a separate product name. Apple describes Lightning as a way to connect accessories physically to iOS and iPadOS devices.
What is an Apple 8-pin connector?
It is Apple’s Lightning connector, used to make a physical connection between compatible Apple devices and accessories. Apple’s External Accessory documentation describes supported hardware as connecting to an iOS or iPadOS device physically through Lightning or the older 30-pin connector, or wirelessly through Bluetooth.
The phrase “8-pin” refers to the connector’s eight contacts. Apple’s public pages cited here do not identify the function assigned to each contact, so a detailed pinout cannot be established from them.
Is the Apple 8-pin connector Lightning?
Yes. “Lightning” is Apple’s name for the connector commonly meant by “Apple 8-pin connector.” Apple lists Lightning connectors and receptacles among the technologies covered by its MFi accessory program. The program provides accessory developers and manufacturers with technical specifications, hardware components, and certification resources.

How to identify a Lightning accessory
Apple recommends certified accessories that carry the MFi badge. Its Australia-locale support page, published June 19, 2026, warns that counterfeit or uncertified accessories may damage a device, fit poorly, become hot, be easily damaged, or fail to charge or sync. See Apple’s Lightning accessory identification guidance for its checks on packaging, cable markings, connector finish, and contact shape.
- For a third-party accessory: check the packaging for the MFi badge and confirm that the product is identified as MFi-certified.
- For an Apple-branded Lightning-to-USB cable: Apple describes a single-piece, smooth Lightning connector with rounded, smooth, gold- or silver-coloured contacts.
- Connector boot dimensions: the same Apple page gives a width of 7.7 mm and length of 12 mm for the cable boot. Those measurements describe the boot on the cable, not the full Lightning connector specification.
Apple’s MFi process covers product planning, development, certification, and mass production, with Apple certification approval preceding production and sales. A Lightning-shaped plug alone does not establish that a third-party accessory is MFi-certified. Apple’s Accessories page, updated September 21, 2026, is another entry point for accessory information.

What to consider when choosing a Lightning cable
Apple’s guidance supports checking certification and visible cable details, but it does not establish comparative performance among cable models. Before buying, match the cable to how you intend to use it and to the connections on both ends.
- Choose the device-end connector that fits the Apple device or accessory.
- Check the other end—such as USB-A or USB-C—against the charger, computer, or other source you plan to connect.
- Confirm that the cable suits your intended charging or data-sync use.
- Choose a practical length and, for a third-party product, look for the MFi badge on its packaging.
What the term does not tell you
“8-pin” identifies the contact count; it does not, by itself, specify the contact assignments, signaling speed, supported power limits, or complete connector dimensions and electrical characteristics. Apple directs accessory makers to MFi technical specifications, and the public pages cited here do not provide those detailed specifications. Avoid relying on an unverified pinout or assuming that all cables with Lightning plugs have identical capabilities.
