Apple TV 4K is a compact streaming box that connects to a television over HDMI and runs Apple’s tvOS. It provides streaming apps and Apple services on the TV, while Apple devices can make setup faster, send video or audio through AirPlay, mirror screens, act as remotes or keyboards, and—when supported—provide camera or speaker features.
The exact experience depends on the Apple TV generation, tvOS version, television, HDMI cable, network, Apple Account and region. HomePod integration is optional, and several advanced features require a second-generation-or-newer Apple TV 4K.
What Apple TV 4K is
Apple TV 4K is not a television and it does not replace an internet connection. It is a set-top streaming device: you plug it into an available HDMI input on a TV, connect power, join a network, and use its tvOS interface to open streaming apps and Apple services. Apps can be downloaded from the App Store after setup, and different people can have their own profiles.
The current specification described by Apple uses an A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. The 64GB capacity is listed for the Wi-Fi configuration. The Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration has 128GB, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking. Storage is built into the box; it is used for apps and system data rather than for recording television broadcasts.

Picture and sound capabilities
Apple lists output of up to 2160p at 60 frames per second for SDR, Dolby Vision up to 2160p at 60 frames per second, and HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support. Dolby Atmos is also supported. These are device capabilities, not a guarantee that every program will appear in 4K, HDR or Atmos. The television, HDMI cable, app, title, receiver or sound system and the source’s format all have to support the selected mode.
A 4K/HDR television is required to benefit from those output formats. On a lower-resolution or non-HDR television, Apple TV 4K can still provide streaming, but the display will determine the available resolution and dynamic range.
What you need before setup
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Television with an HDMI input | Apple TV 4K sends its picture and sound to the TV through HDMI. |
| HDMI cable | Apple says the cable is required and sold separately. For a 4K HDR setup, its guide calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. |
| Internet connection | Streaming, software downloads, app downloads and many Apple services need internet access through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. |
| Apple Account | Required for purchases, rentals, Apple services and downloading apps. You can complete basic device setup with the remote if you do not have an iPhone or iPad. |
| Compatible TV and content | 4K and HDR output require a compatible television, and the program itself must be available in the relevant format. |
An iPhone running iOS 9.1 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 13 or later, is a convenience rather than a requirement. Apple says a nearby qualifying device can make setup faster by transferring some information.

- Connect HDMI. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into Apple TV 4K and the other into an HDMI input on the television. If you are installing a 4K HDR system, use the compatible Ultra High Speed cable specified by Apple’s setup guidance.
- Connect power. Attach the power cable and turn on the television.
- Select the correct input. Use the TV remote to choose the HDMI input where Apple TV 4K is connected. If the screen is blank, check this input before changing settings.
- Choose a setup method. Follow the on-screen prompts with the Apple TV remote, or bring a qualifying iPhone or iPad close to the box for Apple’s faster setup flow.
- Join the network. Select a Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or connect Ethernet if you have the Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration and want a wired connection.
- Sign in to your Apple Account. This enables purchases, rentals, Apple services and app downloads. The account step can be completed with the on-screen keyboard and remote.
- Finish personalization. Add profiles, install the streaming apps you use and check for tvOS updates. App and content availability can differ by country or region.
Using an iPhone or iPad with Apple TV 4K
Faster initial setup
During setup, a nearby iPhone or iPad can transfer some configuration information and reduce typing. Apple’s stated thresholds are iOS 9.1 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 13 or later for iPad. This does not make an Apple mobile device mandatory: the remote-based setup path remains available.
Stream video or audio with AirPlay
AirPlay can send supported video or audio from an iPhone or iPad to Apple TV 4K. In Apple’s wording, “You can use AirPlay to play video or audio from your iPhone or iPad on Apple TV 4K, or to view the screen of your Mac, iPhone or iPad on Apple TV 4K.” In practice, open compatible content, choose the AirPlay destination, and select the Apple TV.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
AirPlay can also mirror the entire iPhone or iPad display. Mirroring is useful for photos, presentations and apps that do not provide a separate AirPlay playback control, but the TV shows the mobile device’s screen rather than receiving a native television version of the app.
Network discovery is a common dependency. Apple’s guidance says devices may need to share a network; its iPhone instructions specifically require the iPhone and Apple TV to be on the same Wi-Fi network for streaming videos or photos. Guest networks, client isolation and a TV connected to a different network segment can prevent discovery.

Apple’s user guide lists an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch as a possible Apple TV remote, and an iPhone or iPad can provide a keyboard for text entry. Availability depends on the device and software combination. These options are particularly useful when searching the App Store or entering a long password.
Using a Mac with Apple TV 4K
AirPlay can display a Mac screen on Apple TV 4K. Open the Mac’s screen-mirroring or AirPlay controls, choose Apple TV as the destination and follow any on-screen confirmation. Apple’s support wording again notes that devices may need to share a network, so verify that the Mac and Apple TV can see each other before troubleshooting the display.
Mac mirroring sends the desktop rather than installing Mac applications on tvOS. The TV therefore acts as an external wireless display for supported AirPlay use cases; it does not turn Apple TV into a Mac or provide macOS software on the television.

Using HomePod or HomePod mini for sound
HomePod is optional. Apple TV 4K works without one, using the television’s speakers or another connected audio system. If you want Apple’s speaker integration, HomePod or HomePod mini can be selected as the audio destination.
Set HomePod as the home-theater output
- Place Apple TV 4K and the HomePod or HomePod mini in the same physical room.
- In the Home app, assign both devices to the same room.
- On Apple TV, choose HomePod as the Default Audio Output.
Apple describes Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital support for HomePod configurations. HomePod mini renders those formats in mono or stereo, so the format label does not mean that a mini produces the same multichannel presentation as a full home-theater speaker arrangement.
Send television audio back to HomePod with ARC or eARC
A separate feature routes audio from the television through Apple TV 4K to HomePod. Apple specifies Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), HomePod or HomePod mini, and a television with ARC or eARC support. The TV may also require ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC to be enabled in its own settings.
This requirement matters when you want audio from devices plugged directly into the television, rather than only audio originating in Apple TV apps. If your Apple TV is a first-generation 4K model, or the television lacks ARC/eARC, this particular return-audio arrangement is not supported according to Apple’s requirements.
Generation and software limitations
| Feature | Requirement or qualification |
|---|---|
| ARC/eARC television audio to HomePod | Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), a compatible HomePod or HomePod mini, and a television with ARC/eARC; HDMI-CEC may need to be enabled. |
| Continuity Camera | Apple lists Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), tvOS 17 or later, and specified iPhone/iPad models and operating-system combinations. |
| tvOS 26 Liquid Glass design | Apple’s tvOS 26 guide describes this design for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), along with updates to FaceTime, the Apple TV app and Aerial screen savers. |
| AirPlay and device control | Supported devices, software versions and network conditions determine whether a particular iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch function is available. |
Do not assume that a feature documented for “Apple TV 4K” applies to every generation. Check the model generation, installed tvOS version and the exact iPhone, iPad, Mac or HomePod software before buying accessories or planning a setup. Apple also cautions that features and content are not available in every region or on every Apple TV hardware model.

Choosing between the two configurations
| Configuration | Storage | Networking listed by Apple | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | 64GB | Wi-Fi 6 | A setup with a reliable wireless network and no need for a wired connection. |
| Wi-Fi + Ethernet | 128GB | Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking | A TV near a router or network switch, or a household that specifically wants Ethernet and the larger listed storage capacity. |
Neither configuration changes the requirement for an HDMI cable, television compatibility or an Apple Account. Choose Ethernet for the network connection you actually have, not because a wired link automatically makes every stream higher quality; the service, network capacity and content format still determine playback.
Troubleshooting the most common setup problems
The TV says “No Signal”
- Confirm Apple TV 4K has power and that the HDMI cable is fully inserted at both ends.
- Use the television remote to select the exact HDMI input used during installation.
- For 4K HDR, test with the compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable recommended in Apple’s setup guidance.
- Try another HDMI input if the selected port does not support the desired format.
AirPlay cannot find Apple TV
- Put the iPhone, iPad or Mac and Apple TV on the same network; for iPhone video or photo streaming, Apple specifically calls for the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check whether a guest network or router isolation setting prevents devices from discovering one another.
- Confirm that the Apple TV and source device are awake, updated and signed in where the app requires an account.
- Remember that app support and regional content rights can limit what can be sent by AirPlay.
There is no HomePod audio
- For default home-theater output, verify that Apple TV and HomePod are assigned to the same room in the Home app.
- Check that HomePod is selected as Default Audio Output on Apple TV.
- For television audio return, verify Apple TV 4K is second generation or later, the TV has ARC/eARC, and ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC are enabled in the TV menus.
- Check whether the television or source format is compatible with the HomePod arrangement; HomePod mini presents Dolby formats in mono or stereo.
4K or HDR is not appearing
Confirm all three links in the chain: the title or app must provide the format, the television must support it, and the HDMI connection must be suitable. Apple TV’s specification lists the maximum formats it can output; it does not upgrade an SDR program into native HDR or make a non-4K television display 4K detail.
How Apple TV 4K fits into an Apple-device household
The strongest reason to add Apple TV 4K to an Apple household is continuity between screens. An iPhone or iPad can accelerate setup, send a video or photo to the television, mirror its display and make text entry easier. A Mac can mirror its screen. An Apple Watch can serve as a remote where supported. HomePod can become the television’s optional audio output, with additional ARC/eARC behavior on newer Apple TV hardware.
Those links are conveniences layered on top of a conventional HDMI streaming box. You still need the cable, a suitable television and network access, and advanced functions remain conditional on generation, software and region. Checking those dependencies before purchase prevents the most common surprises: buying a first-generation model for an ARC/eARC feature, expecting every title to be 4K HDR, or assuming AirPlay works across separate networks.
