Apple M4 Pro is a system-on-a-chip for Mac computers, not a computer you buy on its own. In the 2024 models, it was offered in certain Mac mini and MacBook Pro configurations. Its top published specifications include a 14-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, support for up to 64GB of unified memory, and 273GB/s of memory bandwidth.
What is Apple M4 Pro?
M4 Pro is a higher-capability member of Apple’s M4 chip family, designed for Mac users with demanding workloads. Apple announced it on October 30, 2024, positioning it for tasks such as software development, engineering, research, and creative work. The chip is integrated into a complete Mac; it is not a standalone computer.
Apple described M4 Pro as scaling up technologies in the standard M4 for more demanding work. Its examples included building and testing apps across multiple Xcode simulators, graphics work using hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and running Apple Intelligence models on-device. These are examples of intended use, not a guarantee that every task will run at a particular speed.

These are vendor-reported, workload-specific comparisons; they should not be read as a universal speed ranking or independent benchmarks. For a meaningful comparison between Macs, consider the actual CPU and GPU configurations, memory, application, and task rather than relying on core counts or unrelated performance figures alone.
Which Macs include M4 Pro?
Apple announced M4 Pro configurations in the 2024 Mac mini and MacBook Pro lineups. The chip is part of those specific computer configurations, so check the model and configuration details when buying rather than assuming every Mac mini or MacBook Pro has it.

For example, Apple’s 2024 Mac mini with M4 Pro has three Thunderbolt 5 ports and supports up to three 6K displays at 60Hz. Those are specifications for that Mac mini, not universal features of every Mac with M4 Pro. Port count, placement, and display support depend on the computer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide if an M4 Pro Mac fits your needs?
- Match the chip to your work: M4 Pro is aimed at more demanding tasks such as development, creative applications, and on-device workloads. The chip’s name alone does not establish how a specific app or project will perform.
- Check the complete configuration: Confirm the CPU and GPU core counts and the amount of unified memory in the exact Mac. “Up to” figures refer to maximum support, not a promise that every configuration includes those maximums.
- Compare the computer’s connections and displays: Thunderbolt 5 support is enabled by M4 Pro, but the number and arrangement of ports and the supported display setup are model-specific.
- Compare equivalent workloads: Apple’s published speed figures use particular apps and comparison machines. They are useful context for those stated tests, not a substitute for results on your own software and tasks.
Apple’s primary announcements provide the chip specifications and explain its intended workloads: Apple introduces M4 Pro and M4 Max and Apple’s 2024 Mac mini announcement. Official specifications are also available for Mac mini (2024) and 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max (2024).
