Apple File System (APFS) is Apple’s proprietary file system: the software structure that organizes files and manages storage on Apple devices. Apple designed it with encryption in mind and optimized it for flash and solid-state drive (SSD) storage. APFS is not a physical disk, a storage product, or a backup service.
What APFS does
A file system determines how a device stores, names, locates, and updates files. Apple describes APFS as the file system used across its platforms, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Its Security Guide lists several design features:
- Copy-on-write metadata: changes are written in a way intended to support reliability rather than simply overwriting existing metadata in place.
- Space sharing: multiple volumes in one container draw from the same pool of available space.
- Cloning: files and directories can be cloned without immediately duplicating all their data.
- Snapshots: the file system can capture a point-in-time state.
- Fast directory sizing and atomic safe-save primitives: features intended to make common file operations more efficient and reliable.
Apple also describes an I/O-coalescing copy-on-write design intended to balance performance and reliability. That is a description of APFS’s design, not a published independent benchmark or guarantee that every task will be faster.

How APFS containers and volumes work
An APFS container is the storage pool; volumes are the logical storage spaces inside it. Volumes in a container use available space on demand, so one volume can use free capacity that another is not using. The container’s available space is its capacity minus the space used by all its volumes. Apple’s Disk Utility guide says volume reserves and quotas can also be set.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This distinction matters: a volume is not necessarily a fixed partition with its own isolated allotment. Its use of shared container capacity can be bounded or protected with a quota or reserve.
APFS on a Mac startup disk
Apple documents a particular startup-container layout for Macs running macOS 10.15 or later. It includes at least five volumes:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Preboot, VM, and Recovery: supporting startup, virtual memory, and recovery functions.
- System: holds startup files and native macOS apps.
- Data: holds changeable user content and installed content.
On macOS 11 or later, the system volume is captured in a snapshot, and the Mac boots from that snapshot. This is a documented Mac startup arrangement, not a rule that every APFS container on every Apple device has five volumes.

APFS, encryption, and system integrity
APFS was designed with encryption in mind, but the security mechanisms around it have distinct roles. APFS provides file-system features; FileVault is the Mac feature users enable for disk encryption protection tied to their password; and the signed system volume (SSV) verifies macOS system content cryptographically.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Apple’s signed-system-volume documentation says macOS 11 or later checks system content and uses APFS snapshots to restore the prior system version if an update cannot be completed. An integrity mismatch prevents the affected data from being returned to requesting software. These protections concern the signed system volume; they are not a promise that APFS alone prevents every attack or data-loss event. A system snapshot is also not a complete independent backup.
Encryption details depend on the Apple platform and hardware. Apple’s Data Protection overview explains that devices with an Apple SoC use a key hierarchy to protect data in flash storage, and that APFS can subdivide keys per extent. For Apple silicon Macs, Apple describes a volume key by default and says users must opt in to FileVault to tie the encryption key hierarchy to their password. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that every APFS volume is automatically encrypted in the same way.

Which APFS format option means what?
For Macs using macOS 10.13 or later, Disk Utility lists four APFS format choices. They combine two separate settings: encryption and case sensitivity.
| Disk Utility format | Encryption | Case sensitivity |
|---|---|---|
| APFS | Off | Off |
| APFS (Encrypted) | On | Off |
| APFS (Case-sensitive) | Off | On |
| APFS (Case-sensitive, Encrypted) | On | On |
Case-sensitive formats treat filenames such as Homework and HOMEWORK as different names. Choose a case-sensitive option only when the software or workflow using the volume requires that distinction.

Where APFS works—and where compatibility needs checking
Apple says APFS is the default Mac file system for macOS 10.13 or later and supports bootable and data volumes on those systems. Although optimized for flash and SSD storage, APFS can also be used with older systems that have traditional hard drives and with external direct-attached storage.
Those Mac support statements do not mean every operating system can read APFS natively. Apple’s Disk Utility guide identifies MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT as Windows-compatible formats; APFS is not presented there as the Windows-compatible choice. Check the operating systems and devices that must access a drive before formatting it, since formatting choices affect interoperability.
