An SSID is your Wi-Fi network’s name—the label you choose when connecting a phone, laptop, or other device. SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. It is not the Wi-Fi password: the name identifies the network, while a password or security key controls access to a protected one.

What does SSID mean?

SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. In everyday use, it means the name of a Wi-Fi network. More precisely, NIST defines an SSID as a name assigned to a wireless access point so devices can distinguish it from other access points. NIST’s glossary provides that definition; Apple likewise describes an SSID as the name a network uses to advertise its presence to other devices.

Where can you find your SSID?

On a phone, computer, or tablet

Open the device’s Wi-Fi settings and look at the available network list. The name shown there is usually the SSID. Apple notes that this is the name nearby users see when a network advertises its presence. Exact menu labels vary by device and operating system.

On the router or in its settings

If you are already connected, your device’s Wi-Fi settings can show the network name it is using. The router may also have the name on a label, or display it in its app or administration page; TP-Link’s general guidance describes these ways to find it. Labels and menus differ by router, so use the instructions for your model if needed.

Is the SSID the same as the Wi-Fi password?

No. The SSID is the network name; the Wi-Fi password, also called a security key, is a separate credential used to connect to a protected network. Microsoft’s wireless-network setup guidance treats the default SSID and security key as separate setup items. Knowing the network name alone does not grant access when the network requires a password.

What is a hidden SSID?

A hidden SSID is a network configured not to appear in the ordinary list of available Wi-Fi networks. Apple documents this as a router setting. Hiding the name changes how easily devices discover the network; it does not replace a password or supported Wi-Fi security. Microsoft recommends setting a security key to protect a wireless network.

  1. Open your router’s app or administration page and sign in.
  2. Find the wireless or Wi-Fi settings; the exact label and location vary by router.
  3. Edit the network name (SSID), save the change, and follow any router prompts.
  4. Reconnect devices if necessary. A device with the old network name saved may need to select the new name and enter the password again; check your router and device documentation for the exact behavior.

How should you choose a Wi-Fi name?

  • Choose a distinctive name. Apple advises against common or default names. A unique name can help your devices distinguish your network from nearby networks with similar names.
  • Keep the name appropriate to broadcast. Nearby users may see it when your network advertises its presence.
  • Consider how your router handles frequency bands. Apple recommends using one name across supported bands in its router guidance, but equipment and client behavior can vary. Follow the guidance for your router and devices rather than assuming one naming arrangement fits every setup.
  • Protect the network separately. Use a security key and check which Wi-Fi security options your access point and devices support. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office recommends changing the default network name and says WPA3 is a better choice where the access point supports it; compatibility depends on the equipment, so check current router and device support.
