LCD stands for liquid-crystal display. It is a screen technology in which electrical signals change how liquid crystals control light, producing the bright and dark areas that form text, segments, or images.
How does an LCD work?
Liquid crystals have optical properties that affect light passing through them. In a common LCD design, electrical input changes the orientation of the liquid-crystal molecules. Polarizing filters then control how much light passes through each part of the display, making areas appear lighter or darker.
A watch provides a simple example: its liquid-crystal material sits between conducting glass plates, with polarization filters arranged to let the display form visible segments. That is one design, not a blueprint for every LCD. In a projector, for example, liquid-crystal panels can act as light valves that shape the projected image.
Does an LCD produce its own light?
Not necessarily. Many LCDs control light from another source rather than emitting the image light themselves. A television LCD commonly uses a backlight behind the liquid-crystal layer; the layer regulates how much of that light reaches each image area. Other LCD designs, such as some watch displays, can use ambient light instead of a built-in backlight.

What does “LED TV” mean?
In the common phrase “LED TV,” LED describes the backlight: LEDs illuminate a television that still uses an LCD panel to form the image. The liquid crystals control the light; the LEDs supply it. So “LED TV” usually refers to an LED-backlit LCD television, not a screen that uses LEDs as the image-forming pixels.
Where are LCDs used?
LCD technology appears in products including digital watches, computer monitors, televisions, and projectors. The details vary by application: a watch may show simple segments, while a monitor or television uses many image areas to display detailed pictures. The shared idea is that liquid crystals regulate light to create what you see.
