An EV charging station is a place or grouped installation with equipment that supplies electricity to plug-in electric vehicles. The station is the site; a port is the interface that charges a vehicle; and a connector is the plug that goes into the vehicle. These terms are sometimes used differently by agencies and datasets, so the distinction matters when comparing equipment or counting chargers.
What an EV charging station includes
A station is a physical location or installation that contains one or more charging ports. It might be at a home, workplace, parking garage, public lot, or roadside site. A large property can also contain multiple station locations, even if they share one street address. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) uses “station location” for the place and “charging port” for the equipment interface (DOE AFDC terminology).
Station, port, and connector
- Station: the site or grouped installation where EV charging equipment is available.
- Port: the equipment interface that supplies power to one vehicle at a time. A post or cabinet may house one or more ports.
- Connector: the plug that connects the charging equipment to the vehicle. A port may offer more than one connector type, but that does not mean it can charge multiple vehicles at once.
Ireland’s Department of Transport describes a charging point as interface equipment connecting a single EV to an electricity supply. Individual points can stand alone or be grouped into hubs or stations (Irish Department of Transport definition).
Why the terminology can be confusing
“Charger,” “charge point,” and “station” do not have one universal meaning. In AFDC terminology, a charging port is also called a charger. The UK Department for Transport notes that “charge point” has been used for different components, which can make statistics difficult to interpret. Its statistical series uses EVSE/charger as its baseline from 2026 (UK DfT terminology FAQ).

- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
For a meaningful comparison, check what is being counted: physical sites, charging units or ports, connectors, or vehicles that can charge simultaneously. A count of connectors is not necessarily a count of ports or available vehicle spaces.
Formal definitions vary by jurisdiction
In the EU, Regulation 2023/1804 defines a “recharging point” as an interface that can recharge one EV at a time, even if it has several connector types. The regulation excludes devices at or below 3.7 kW whose primary purpose is not EV recharging. This is a legal definition for that regulation, not a universal everyday definition (EU Regulation 2023/1804, consolidated text dated 8 January 2026).

- [Up to 9x Faster Charging Speed]: Provides up to 46 miles/hour charging speed via hardwired connection (48 amp - up to 9x faster than a standard wall outlet) or up to 38 miles/hour via the NEMA 14-50 plug (40 amp). Professional installation recommended for optimal safety and performance. [Install The Power Outlet Cord]: No smaller than 8AWG if charge 40-48A, we suggest 6AWG cord.(1.The input side is belongs to the electrician electric automobile regulation scope, need to use three 6AWG cable wires for 48A; 2.The charging cable belongs to the automotive connector certification standard, so the 8AWG cable can meet the 48A.)

How charging equipment supplies power
Stations can offer different charging approaches. The DOE AFDC describes AC Level 1 equipment using 120-volt service, AC Level 2 equipment commonly using 240 volts in residential applications or 208 volts in commercial applications, and DC fast charging. Charging speed depends on more than the station’s rating: the vehicle’s battery state and capacity, its charging capability, the equipment’s power, and the available electrical service all affect the result.
As approximate U.S. AFDC examples, Level 1 adds about 5 miles of range per hour when assuming 1.9 kW, while Level 2 adds about 25 miles per hour. These are illustrative estimates, not guaranteed results for every vehicle or charging setup. The same AFDC page reports that less than 1% of public EV charging ports in the United States were Level 1 as of 2023; that figure describes U.S. public ports in that year, not all charging equipment or later years (DOE AFDC charging guidance).

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
What to consider when comparing charging options
- Location and access: home, workplace, fleet facility, or public destination; also check whether the equipment is available to you.
- Power and electrical supply: Level 1, Level 2, or DC fast charging, along with the site’s available service.
- Vehicle compatibility: connector compatibility and the vehicle’s own charging capability.
- Time and operating needs: how long the vehicle will be parked, and whether public access, payment, network connectivity, or maintenance arrangements matter.
The DOE says most EV owners do most of their charging at home, with workplace and public charging supplementing it. Its consumer guidance discusses Level 2 portable or hardwired equipment for home use and recommends checking installation options with the vehicle dealer or manufacturer (DOE AFDC consumer guidance). These general descriptions are not individualized electrical installation instructions.
