An earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) is a protective device that disconnects power when it detects current escaping the intended circuit path. In current IEC terminology, the broad category is a residual-current device (RCD). The label “ELCB” alone does not establish which exact device you have: check its markings and technical documentation to see whether it is an RCCB or an RCBO.
How does an earth leakage circuit breaker work?
An RCD monitors the current flowing in the circuit conductors and calculates their vector sum. Under normal conditions, the currents balance and the sum is zero. If some current takes an unintended path—creating a residual-current imbalance—the device disconnects the supply when that imbalance reaches its operating sensitivity. ABB describes this operating principle in its technical catalogue.
The purpose is to reduce hazards associated with leakage current, including electric shock. The exact protection a device provides depends on its design and the installation; the term “earth leakage” does not mean that every fault current will be detected in every arrangement.
Is an ELCB the same as an RCD, RCCB, or RCBO?
These terms are related, but they do not all identify the same function. IEC uses RCD as the broad category. The more specific terms RCCB and RCBO distinguish whether the device also has integral overcurrent protection.

IEC 61008-1:2024 covers RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection, while IEC 61009-1:2024 covers RCBOs with it. An RCCB alone therefore does not protect its circuit against overload or short circuit; ABB states that it must be used with an MCB or fuse that protects it from overcurrent stresses. Why the label “ELCB” can be ambiguous
“ELCB” is commonly used as a general name for an earth-leakage protective device, but the label by itself is not enough to establish its construction or functions. Current IEC product standards specify distinct categories such as RCCB and RCBO, and IEC terminology for RCD product standards is addressed in IEC 62873-2:2016.

To identify a particular unit, read its front-panel markings and consult the manufacturer’s documentation. Do not assume that two devices called ELCBs provide the same protection or can replace one another.
Does an earth leakage circuit breaker protect against overload?
Not necessarily. An RCCB detects residual current but has no integral overcurrent protection. An RCBO combines residual-current protection with integral overcurrent protection. The device’s markings and documentation—not the generic ELCB label—show which arrangement applies.

What do the IEC ratings mean?
IEC standard scope figures describe which products the standards cover; they are not recommendations for selecting a device for a particular home or circuit.
- RCCBs: IEC 61008-1:2024 states a scope of up to 440 V AC and 125 A for household and similar-use devices, principally intended to protect against shock hazards.
- RCBOs: IEC 61009-1:2024 states a scope of up to 440 V AC, 125 A rated current, and 25,000 A rated short-circuit capacity for household and similar-use devices.
These limits are stated in the respective IEC RCCB standard and IEC RCBO standard. They do not establish the correct rating or device type for an individual installation.

What matters when identifying or selecting a device?
Device choice depends on the protection required and the electrical system in which it will operate. Relevant factors include:
- Whether the device is an RCCB, which lacks integral overcurrent protection, or an RCBO, which includes it.
- The waveform or residual-current type it is designed to detect.
- Rated current and residual operating sensitivity.
- Voltage, number of poles, and compatibility with the installation.
- Applicable local requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.
ABB identifies construction, detectable waveform, tripping sensitivity, and tripping time as device classification parameters. Its Training Centre Singapore course outline also treats system earthing, specification, application, and selection as connected topics. A general definition cannot determine the correct replacement or rating for a specific installation.

When should you ask an electrician?
If you need to identify, install, or replace a device, consult a qualified electrician and follow local requirements. Do not open a distribution board or attempt live-wiring work based on a generic definition: installation-specific factors determine what protection is appropriate.
