An Apple set-top box is the physical Apple TV 4K: a device that connects to a television over HDMI and runs tvOS, Apple’s operating system for the device. It brings streaming apps and Apple services to the TV. The name can also refer to Apple’s TV app or subscription, which are different things.
What “Apple TV” means
Apple uses “Apple TV” for more than one thing. The Apple TV 4K is hardware: a box connected to a television. The Apple TV app is software for browsing and watching video. An Apple TV subscription provides subscription content accessed through the app. You do not need to treat these three meanings as interchangeable; the set-top box is the physical device.
Apple describes Apple TV 4K as a way to use Apple services and streaming apps on a television. Which apps, features, and content are available depends on the model and region.

What the box does
Apple TV 4K connects a television to streaming and other apps supported by its tvOS software. It is a separate device from the television itself, rather than an app that turns any screen into an Apple TV. The exact features and content supported vary across hardware models and regions.

What you need to connect it
- An HD or 4K television with an HDMI port.
- An HDMI cable, which Apple says is sold separately. For a 4K HDR television, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Internet access over Wi-Fi, or a wired network connection on the Apple TV 4K configuration with Ethernet.
The television and connection also need to support the resolution and HDR format you want to use. Apple’s setup instructions explain the connection requirements at Set up your Apple TV 4K.
Apple TV 4K configurations and specifications
Apple’s specifications page lists Apple TV 4K configurations with 64GB or 128GB of storage. The Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration includes Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking; these are configuration-specific details, not features to assume for every box. Apple also lists HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and an A15 Bionic chip for the model described on that page. Check Apple TV 4K technical specifications for current configurations and included items, since product details can change.

Apple lists a Siri Remote and power cord in the box. An HDMI cable is not listed as included in Apple’s setup requirements and is sold separately.
How to distinguish it from older Apple TV hardware
Apple Support identifies both Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K hardware families. The current product name for Apple’s set-top box is Apple TV 4K, but “Apple TV” in an older device listing or conversation may refer to a different model. Do not assume every current feature or item of content works on every model. Apple’s Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support page describes model families and notes that features and content availability can vary by hardware and region.
