Amazon S3 (Amazon Simple Storage Service) is Amazon Web Services’ object storage service. You create a bucket in an AWS Region, store objects in it, and retrieve them over the internet or from your own cloud applications. It is used for backups, data lakes, website and app assets, media, software downloads, archives, and IoT data. You pay for the data you keep, but also for the requests, retrievals, transfers, and optional features that come with using it, so the monthly bill is driven by how you use S3, not just by how many gigabytes you store.

What Amazon S3 is

S3 is object storage, not a disk attached to a server and not a conventional file server. Instead of a folder tree on a drive, you work with two core units:

  • Buckets are containers you create in a specific AWS Region. The Region you choose affects where the data physically sits and how much certain features cost.
  • Objects are the things you store. Each object consists of the data itself (a photo, a database export, a log file, a video) and metadata that describes it.
  • Keys are the names that identify each object within a bucket. A key can look like a file path, such as reports/2026/september.csv, but S3 treats it as a single name, not as folders that have to exist.

Because storage is addressed by key rather than by mounted location, applications reach S3 through its API or through AWS tools and SDKs. That is why S3 suits data that many systems read, and why it is a poor fit for software that expects to write to a local file path and modify bytes in place.

What Amazon S3 is used for

AWS groups S3 use cases into several patterns. Most real deployments combine more than one.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
  • Data lakes and analytics: Raw and processed datasets stored in S3 and queried by analytics services.
  • Backup and recovery: Copies of application data, databases, and system images, often with lifecycle rules that move older copies to cheaper classes.
  • Archives: Records kept for long periods and rarely read, such as compliance copies or old project files.
  • Websites and web applications: Static site files, images, and user uploads served to browsers.
  • Mobile and cloud-native applications: Content and user data that apps read and write through the API.
  • Media hosting and software delivery: Video, audio, and installer or update files distributed to users.
  • IoT and enterprise data: Device telemetry and business records collected at volume.

S3 is therefore not only a backup target. It is closer to a general-purpose store that other AWS services and your own software can share.

Core features

Storage classes

S3 offers several storage classes because access frequency, retrieval speed, resilience, and cost trade off against each other. Choosing a class is the most important cost decision in S3, and it should follow how often the data will actually be read.

Storage class Typical fit Points to check before choosing
S3 Standard Frequently accessed data; the default class No retrieval fee or minimum storage duration is implied by the class design; confirm current charges on the pricing page.
S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA Data read infrequently but needed quickly when requested Retrieval fees and minimum storage-duration considerations apply. One Zone-IA stores data in a single Availability Zone.
S3 Glacier classes Archival data that is rarely retrieved Retrieval fees and minimum storage durations apply; retrieval speed depends on the specific Glacier class.
S3 Intelligent-Tiering Data whose access pattern is changing or unknown Includes per-object monitoring and automation fees; AWS positions it for uncertain access rather than as a fixed cheapest option.
S3 Express One Zone Latency-sensitive workloads Data is stored in one Availability Zone, so it is not spread across multiple zones.

The class table reflects AWS’s storage-class comparison. Exact minimum durations, per-request prices, and retrieval rates vary by Region and change over time, so check them on the AWS S3 pricing page before you commit a dataset to a class.

Lifecycle rules

Lifecycle policies automate movement between classes or deletion after a set period. A common pattern is to keep recent backups in Standard, transition older copies to an archive class, and expire them after the retention period ends. Lifecycle rules reduce manual cleanup, but they also need review, because an expiration rule that is too aggressive permanently removes data you may still need.

Versioning, replication, and Object Lock

  • Versioning keeps earlier versions of an object when it is overwritten or deleted, which protects against accidental changes. Previous versions still count toward storage.
  • Replication copies objects and their metadata to destination buckets, which can be in another Region, for disaster recovery or compliance.
  • Object Lock prevents objects from being changed or deleted for a configured retention period, which is useful for write-once records.

Consistency

AWS states that S3 provides strong read-after-write consistency. After you successfully write an object, a subsequent read returns the latest version, so applications do not need to work around stale reads for ordinary put-then-get sequences.

Security and access defaults

S3 buckets and objects are private by default. Access is controlled through several layers that AWS documents:

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
  • IAM policies that grant specific users and roles permission to specific actions.
  • Bucket policies that apply rules to everyone accessing a bucket.
  • Access control lists (ACLs) as a legacy mechanism for object-level permissions.
  • Access points that give applications their own named entry points with separate policies.
  • Encryption of stored data, plus audit logging to record who accessed what.
  • Block Public Access settings, which AWS enables by default on new buckets. AWS’s user guide recommends leaving them on unless a specific use case requires public access.

Private by default does not mean configured correctly. Most public S3 data exposures come from a bucket whose Block Public Access was turned off or whose policy was written too broadly, so review permissions whenever a bucket changes purpose. Durability also does not replace access control, recovery planning, or testing restores.

Durability and availability

AWS’s S3 overview states that S3 is designed for 99.999999999% (eleven nines) durability and 99.99% availability by default. These are design targets published by AWS, not a service-level agreement tailored to your account, and they do not mean data cannot be lost. Accidental deletion, misconfigured lifecycle rules, and compromised credentials can all cause loss regardless of the underlying design, which is why versioning, replication, and Object Lock exist.

AWS describes S3 in its overview as “an object storage service offering industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance.”

How S3 pricing works

There is no single S3 price. AWS lists these cost components, and any of them can appear on a bill:

Cost component What drives it
Storage Volume of data stored and how long it stays, by storage class
Requests and retrieval Number of API requests (reads, writes, lists) and, for some classes, the amount of data retrieved
Data transfer and transfer acceleration Data moved out of AWS or between Regions, and optional accelerated transfer
Management and insights Lifecycle, inventory, analytics, and monitoring features you enable
Replication Storage and transfer for copies held in destination buckets
Transformation and query features Optional processing features and queries run against stored data

Rates depend on the Region and on configuration. To estimate, list the volume you will store, how long you will keep it, how many requests your applications make, how much you will retrieve or transfer out, and which optional features you will enable. The AWS S3 pricing page and AWS pricing calculator take those inputs and reflect current rates. Treat any single monthly figure from a third-party article as out of date until you have checked it against those pages.

Benefits and tradeoffs

The main benefits are practical. S3 scales without you provisioning a fixed volume in advance, so capacity grows with the data you store. It handles many data types and access patterns under one service. Its storage classes let you match cost to how often data is read, and its lifecycle, versioning, replication, and encryption features reduce the operational work of protecting data.

Best Value
Amazon Echo Spot (newest model), Great for nightstands, offices and kitchens, Smart alarm clock, Designed for Alexa+, Black
  • MEET ECHO SPOT - A sleek smart alarm clock with Alexa and big vibrant sound. Ready to help you wake up, wind down, and so much more.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE SMART CLOCK - See time, weather, and song titles at a glance, control smart home devices, and more. Personalize your display with your favorite clock face and fun colors.
  • BIG VIBRANT SOUND - Enjoy rich sound with clear vocals and deep bass. Just ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks. See song titles and touch to control your music.
  • EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

The tradeoffs are mostly about planning. “Pay for what you use” requires understanding several usage dimensions at once. A cheap archive class can become expensive if you retrieve data often or delete it before its minimum storage duration ends. Intelligent-Tiering removes the need to predict access, but adds per-object fees, which matter most when you store many small objects. Object storage also means applications must be written around keys and API calls rather than local file paths.

Is S3 the right choice?

S3 fits data that is stored as discrete files or objects, accessed over the network, and needs to scale or be shared. Before adopting it, confirm three things: the Region you need to keep data in for residency reasons, the expected access pattern so you can choose a storage class, and the request and transfer profile so you can estimate the bill. Comparisons with other AWS or non-AWS storage services should start from those same workload facts, because the cost and speed differences depend on them.
