A social media handle is the account identifier people use to find, mention, or tag an account on a platform. It commonly appears with an @ sign, as in @example. A handle is often the username, while the display name is a separate label.
What is a social media handle?
A handle identifies a specific account. People use it to find that account and refer to it in posts, replies, or messages. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Setting up a Social Media Program guide, published in June 2022, describes a handle as similar to a username on other platforms and says it appears after the “@” sign. [EPA guide]
For example, if an account’s handle is @example, someone might type that identifier to find or mention the account. Not every service uses the word “handle” or displays the identifier in exactly the same way.

The handle or username identifies the account; the display name is the public-facing name shown on the profile. A display name does not necessarily have to be unique, while a handle usually distinguishes one account from others on that platform.

X makes this distinction explicitly: its Help Center calls the username, also known as a handle, the identifier followers use for replies, mentions, and Direct Messages, and says the display name is separate. How handles relate to profile links
Many platforms use the username or handle as part of an account’s profile address. X says its username appears in the profile URL. Facebook’s Help Center search extract says a username customizes the profile web address and that changing it changes Facebook and Messenger profile URLs. TikTok’s Help Center extract similarly says the username is shown as an @ tag and makes up the profile link. Because these details can vary or change, treat platform-specific behavior as guidance for that service rather than a universal rule.

What to check before changing a handle
A username change can affect how people find an account and whether existing links still work. Before changing one, check the platform’s current rules and update profile links you have shared elsewhere.

- Check the service’s current requirements. X’s help page says its usernames must be more than 4 and no more than 15 characters and may contain letters, numbers, and underscores. Those are X-specific rules, not a standard for every platform. [How to change your X username]
- Consider links and connected accounts. Facebook’s search-result guidance says changing a username changes Facebook and Messenger profile URLs and that synced Facebook and Instagram information may affect the Instagram username and URL.
- Check availability and timing. TikTok’s search-result guidance says usernames can be changed once every 30 days and that a released username may be unavailable to reuse for a short period. Confirm current details in the platform’s help center before making a change.
