A search engine spider is automated software that discovers and fetches web pages so a search engine can analyze them. It is also called a crawler, robot, or bot. Crawling is only one stage of search: it does not by itself mean a page is indexed or will appear in results.
What a search engine spider does
A spider is a program, not a physical device or a person manually browsing the web. It follows or receives URLs, requests pages, and gathers information for a search engine. Google calls its own search crawler Googlebot and uses crawler, robot, bot, and spider as alternate names for this kind of software. Other search engines may use different crawler systems and rules.
Google describes crawling as how it “sees” the web (Google Crawling Infrastructure).

How a crawler finds and processes pages
- It discovers a URL. For Google, a URL may be known already, linked from a page Google knows about, or listed in a sitemap.
- It fetches the page. Googlebot requests the URL, subject to whether it can access the page, the server response, and Google’s crawl scheduling. A site owner can submit a sitemap, but that does not guarantee a visit.
- It processes the content. Google may render a page and run its JavaScript using a recent version of Chrome when needed. This is a Google-specific example, not a rule for every search engine.
- The search engine evaluates whether to index it. Google analyzes page information and may store it in its index. Crawling does not guarantee indexing.
- It may serve the page in results. Serving is a later decision: an indexed page is not guaranteed to appear for any particular query.
Google documents this sequence, but says it does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served, even if the page follows its Search Essentials (How Google Search works).

Crawling, indexing, and serving are different
| Stage | What happens | What it means for a page |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | The crawler discovers and fetches a URL. | The search engine has visited or requested it; inclusion in results is not assured. |
| Indexing | The search engine analyzes page information and may store it in its index. | The page may be eligible to be considered for results, but visibility is not assured. |
| Serving | The search engine selects and displays results in response to a query. | The page appears for a particular search, if selected. |
These terms describe distinct stages, not interchangeable names for “being on Google.” Google explains its own process in How Google Search works; other search engines may differ.
Can robots.txt stop a page from appearing in search?
Not reliably. A robots.txt file communicates which URLs a crawler may access and can help manage crawling. But if Google discovers a disallowed URL through other means, the URL may still appear in search results, even if Google cannot fetch its content to create a normal snippet.

If the goal is to prevent indexing, Google supports a noindex directive, but the crawler must be able to access the page to see it. If the goal is to restrict access to the page itself, use an access control such as password protection. These controls solve different problems: blocking a crawl is not the same as removing a URL from the index. See Google’s robots.txt introduction and ways to prevent content from appearing in search results. Some crawlers may not honor robots.txt.

- To help discovery: provide a sitemap and use links that make pages reachable. A sitemap is a discovery aid, not a promise of crawling or indexing.
- To manage crawler access: configure robots.txt for URLs or resources crawlers should not fetch, understanding that a disallowed URL can still be known to a search engine.
- To request that a page not be indexed: use an indexing directive such as
noindexin a way the crawler can access and read. - To keep a page private: require authentication or otherwise restrict access; do not rely on robots.txt as a security mechanism.
These examples reflect Google’s published documentation. Do not assume every search engine discovers URLs, renders JavaScript, schedules crawls, or honors directives in exactly the same way.
