A Samsung Galaxy smartphone is an Android phone from Samsung’s Galaxy family. “Galaxy” is the brand umbrella, not a single model or fixed set of specifications. The letter that follows it, such as Z, S, A or M, tells you which range the phone belongs to, and the range is a better guide to price and design than the Galaxy name alone.
What the Galaxy name covers
Samsung uses Galaxy as the name for its smartphone line and describes Galaxy smartphones as Android devices. Everything sold under the name shares that software base, but the hardware can differ widely. A budget handset and a folding flagship can both carry the Galaxy name and still have very different screens, cameras, processors and prices.
How the series letters work
Samsung’s own product guidance explains that the letters distinguish between phone ranges. In its UK buying guide, Samsung Phone Ranges Explained: Z, S & A, the company puts the main ranges like this:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Range | Samsung’s description (UK guide) | What to compare when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z | Foldable smartphones | Form factor: a compact flip design versus a larger foldable that opens into a tablet-sized screen |
| Galaxy S | Premium flagship smartphones | Top-tier features, performance and camera priorities |
| Galaxy A | Everyday features at a more accessible price | Day-to-day needs and price |
| Galaxy M | Not stated in the UK guide; listed among the principal phone lines in Samsung’s Brazil guide | Whether this range is sold in your country, and which exact model is on offer |
Samsung’s guidance says the right range depends on how you use the phone. Treat that as the company’s broad positioning, not an independent benchmark. Two phones in the same range can differ in display size, battery, memory and connectivity, so the range name is only a starting point.

The Galaxy ranges in more detail
Galaxy Z: foldable phones
Galaxy Z is the foldable line. Samsung’s UK guide places it in the foldable category, which is the main thing that sets it apart from the other ranges. If you are weighing a Z model, check the folded and unfolded dimensions, the hinge design and the protection on the flexible display, because these affect daily use more than the spec sheet for a conventional phone does.
Galaxy S: premium flagships
Galaxy S is the range Samsung describes as premium flagship. It is where the company places its most advanced standard-format phones. The S name is also the oldest of the current series, which is covered in the history section below.

Galaxy A: everyday phones
Galaxy A covers everyday features at a more accessible price, according to Samsung’s UK guide. This range is the one most people encounter when they want a Galaxy phone without paying flagship prices. The trade-off is that features such as premium materials, top processors or the highest-end cameras may be reduced compared with the S range. Check the exact model rather than assuming it.
Galaxy M: a regional line
Galaxy M appears in Samsung’s Brazil guide among the principal phone lines, but it is not part of the UK range list. This is the clearest example of why regional catalogs matter. Before comparing Galaxy M phones, confirm that the model is sold in your country through Samsung’s local website or an authorised retailer.

Regional differences in the lineup
The UK and Brazil guides describe the lineup differently. The UK guide presents Z, S and A as the main ranges, while the Brazil guide, Conheça as linhas de celulares Samsung, also names Galaxy M. Neither guide establishes that every market carries every range, so describe the lineup with the market in view rather than as a single global list.
When the Galaxy S series began
Samsung’s newsroom history article, A Journey of Mobile Innovation, states that the first Galaxy S device was announced in 2010 under the tagline “Super Smart.” That date belongs to the S series. It is not the start date for the whole Galaxy brand, and it does not mean that Z, A and M launched at the same time.

What the label does not tell you
- Not every Galaxy phone is foldable. Only the Z range is described that way.
- Not every Galaxy phone is a flagship. Only the S range is positioned at the top.
- Models within one range can differ in specifications, memory and connectivity, as Samsung’s guidance itself notes.
- Prices, model names and availability change. Check a current local listing before comparing exact models.
How to use the letters when shopping
- Decide the form factor first: a conventional bar-shaped phone, or a foldable from the Z range.
- Choose the range that matches your budget and expectations: S for premium, A for everyday value.
- Check whether the range you want is sold in your country, especially for Galaxy M.
- Open the exact model’s product page and compare display, cameras, processor, memory, battery and connectivity.
- Compare the price with the same model in local listings, not with a different model in the same range.
Samsung’s guides are a good starting point for understanding the ranges, but the specification sheet for the exact model is what determines whether a phone meets your needs.
Galaxy is one brand with several distinct ranges. The letter is the quickest signal of what kind of phone you are looking at: Z for foldable, S for premium flagship, A for everyday value, and M where it is sold. Confirm the exact model and local availability before making a decision.
