A remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) is an unoccupied underwater robot that a person pilots from the surface, usually aboard a ship. Its tether is the vital link: it carries control signals to the vehicle and sends live video and other data back to the operator. Thrusters move the ROV, while cameras and lights let the pilot see what is happening underwater.

How an ROV works

An ROV is part of a system that includes the underwater vehicle, a tether, and surface equipment such as a controller and monitor. The vehicle also needs a power source and buoyancy and ballast components to help it operate at the intended depth.

The pilot watches video and telemetry returned through the tether, then uses controls at the surface to direct the vehicle. The tether carries those commands down and sends the vehicle’s video and other data back up. As NOAA explains, “A group of cables, or tether, connects the ROV to the ship, sending electrical signals back and forth between the operator and the vehicle.” (NOAA Ocean Exploration: What is an ROV?)

Thrusters provide movement

The pilot’s inputs control the ROV’s thrusters. Depending on its configuration, the vehicle can move horizontally and vertically and may also move laterally. Propulsion layout and the ability to hold position vary by vehicle.

Cameras and lights provide a view

Most ROVs carry at least a still camera, a video camera, and lights. The camera sends images to the surface while the lights illuminate the dim underwater environment. When visibility is limited, sonar can help with navigation or locating features.

Tools depend on the mission

An ROV can carry additional equipment, but no single payload is standard for every job. A manipulator arm or grabber may retrieve objects or collect samples; other tools may cut lines or support inspection and research. Sonar and other sensors can also be added when the mission calls for them.

  • Real-time 4K video transmission delivers clear, stable visuals to supportaccurate underwater decision-making.
  • 360° omnidirectional movement with precise attitude control enables efficientoperation in confined and dynamic environments.
  • An eight-thruster industrial propulsion system ensures stable and reliableperformance in changing currents.
  • A modular, expandable platform supports multiple underwater missions within a single system.
  • Industrial-grade performance combined with simplified operation makesprofessional underwater work easier to deploy.

What an ROV system includes

  • Vehicle: A frame, buoyancy and ballast, thrusters, cameras, lights, and any mission-specific instruments.
  • Tether: The connection carrying control signals and returning video and other data.
  • Surface controls and display: Equipment the pilot uses to steer the vehicle and view its feed.
  • Power and launch equipment: Power arrangements vary. Larger systems may need a winch and a crane or A-frame for launch and recovery.

These systems range from small platforms to truck-sized vehicles. Their depth ratings, payload capacities, power arrangements, and launch requirements differ, so “ROV” does not mean one standard size or capability.

ROV versus AUV

The key difference is how the vehicle is connected and controlled. An ROV is tethered and piloted in real time by an operator at the surface. An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is untethered and follows a planned mission or onboard directions. AUVs commonly store imagery and sensor data until they are recovered, whereas an ROV can return video through its tether while operating. NOAA summarizes an ROV as “an unoccupied underwater robot that is connected to a ship by a series of cables.” (NOAA Ocean Service: What is the difference between an AUV and a ROV?)

What ROVs are used for

ROVs support ocean exploration and research, industrial surveillance, inspection of underwater structures or vessels, and recovery tasks. The equipment is selected for the work: a camera may be sufficient for visual inspection, while a search or sampling mission may call for sonar, sensors, or a manipulator. These are examples of uses, not a list of gear carried by every ROV.

Depth, pressure, and other operating constraints

Depth is a design limit because pressure increases underwater. Electronics and cameras generally need pressure-resistant housings to prevent collapse. NOAA Ocean Exploration reports that pressure at 6,000 meters (3.7 miles) reaches 596 atmospheres; the page describes finite element analysis and laboratory pressure testing as part of pressure-housing design. Depth rating is only one consideration when choosing or deploying an ROV. Visibility, current, tether handling, available launch and recovery equipment, pilot control, and the instruments required for the mission also matter. There is no single depth, speed, or operating duration that applies to all ROVs.
